Chapter 5: The Man Behind the Medical Records

I barely slept that night.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the documents from Mark's folder.

The forged signatures.

The insurance application.

The medical authorization.

And the message about not bringing my daughter home.

At three in the morning, I found David sitting in his study.

His laptop was open, and several printed photographs were scattered across the desk.

He looked up when I entered.

"Sarah? You should be sleeping.""

"I can't.""

He pushed his chair back.

"Come sit.""

I lowered myself into the chair opposite him.

"Tell me about Victor Hale.""

David closed the laptop.

"Victor was an investor. He and Mark had several businesses together. One of them was a property development company that collected money from private investors.""

"What happened?""

"Millions disappeared. The company claimed it had suffered unexpected losses, but the financial statements didn't match the actual transactions.""

"Did Mark steal the money?""

"I couldn't prove that at the time.""

"Did Victor?""

"Possibly. But before we could complete the investigation, Victor disappeared.""

I stared at him.

"And you think Mark was involved?""

"I think Mark knew more than he admitted.""

David opened a drawer and removed a photograph.

It showed three men standing outside a commercial building.

I recognized Mark immediately.

The second man was older, with silver hair and a broad smile.

The third man was David.

I looked at my brother.

"You worked with Mark?""

"Briefly. Before you married him.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I thought I could resolve the situation without dragging you into it.""

He placed the photograph down.

"Then you told me you were getting married. I tried to warn you, but Mark convinced you that I was jealous of your relationship.""

I remembered that argument.

Mark had told me David was trying to control my life.

He had shown me messages taken out of context.

He had even claimed David had contacted his employer to damage his reputation.

I had believed him.

"I'm sorry," I whispered.

David shook his head.

"Not tonight. Tonight, we're protecting you.""

At eight the following morning, we arrived at St. Mary's Women's Hospital.

A nurse named Emily greeted us at the entrance.

"Mrs. Mercer?""

"Yes.""

"I'm Emily. Dr. Patel is expecting you.""

The doctor was a calm woman in her fifties with short dark hair and a warm smile.

She examined me carefully, reviewed my prenatal records, and listened to our daughter's heartbeat.

Afterward, she pulled up a chair.

"Your baby appears stable, Sarah. Your blood pressure is elevated, but we need to monitor it. I also want to understand why your records contain conflicting medical authorizations.""

I explained everything.

Dr. Patel listened without interrupting.

When I finished, she folded her hands.

"First, I want you to understand something. You have the right to decide who participates in your medical care. Your husband cannot simply appoint someone else to make decisions for you while you're capable of making them yourself.""

I nodded.

"And the private facility?""

"I wouldn't recommend transferring your care there without independently verifying its credentials and clinical arrangements.""

David leaned forward.

"Can you confirm whether Dr. Bennett submitted the authorization?""

Dr. Patel examined the document.

"His name appears here, but we need to contact the medical records department and verify the submission.""

She picked up the phone.

Twenty minutes later, she returned.

Her expression was serious.

"Dr. Bennett did submit a request. However, the request was not accompanied by a proper referral from your current obstetric provider.""

"Then why was it accepted?"" David asked.

"It wasn't fully processed. But someone accessed the file and entered the transfer details.""

I gripped the armrest.

"Can they change my delivery location without me?""

"Not with a valid informed authorization from you.""

Dr. Patel looked at me.

"I recommend we flag your record for additional verification and remove anyone you haven't personally authorized.""

I nodded immediately.

"Remove Mark.""

"Would you like to remove Vanessa as well?""

"Yes.""

The doctor updated the record.

Then she asked whether I wanted a hospital social worker to speak with me.

I agreed.

By lunchtime, I had a new care plan, a written confirmation of my medical preferences, and instructions for contacting the hospital directly.

For the first time, I felt I had some control over my own pregnancy.

But the relief lasted less than an hour.

David received a call from James.

"Mark has filed an emergency petition," James said.

David stopped walking.

"For what?""

"Temporary control of the marital assets and an order preventing Sarah from transferring or accessing certain accounts.""

"On what grounds?""

"He's claiming she has been influenced by you and is attempting to hide jointly owned property.""

I took the phone.

"He's trying to make me look unstable again.""

"That's correct," James replied.

"He's also submitted a statement from a supposed financial adviser claiming Sarah agreed to the transfer months ago.""

"Who?""

"Richard Cole.""

David's expression darkened.

"Of course.""

James continued.

"There's something else. The filing includes screenshots of messages supposedly sent from Sarah to Mark.""

I shook my head.

"I never sent those.""

"I suspected as much. They appear to be fabricated, but we need the original digital records.""

David asked, "Can we challenge the petition?""

"Yes. But I want Vanessa's evidence preserved immediately. It may connect the financial fraud, the forged medical authorizations, and the false statements.""

After the call, we returned to David's house.

Vanessa was waiting in the living room.

She had brought her laptop.

"I found the messages," she said.

David looked at her.

"Show us.""

She opened a folder and displayed several screenshots.

One message supposedly sent from my phone read:

I don't care what happens to the house. Just make sure David stays away from the baby.

Another read:

If Mark gets custody, I'll make sure nobody finds out what happened.

I stared at the screen.

"These are fake.""

Vanessa nodded.

"I know. I watched Mark create them.""

"How?""

"He used an application that allowed him to generate screenshots of conversations. Then he saved them in a folder named Sarah Communications.""

David leaned closer.

"Can you show us the original application records?""

"Yes.""

She opened another folder.

Inside were emails, timestamps, and several files.

One document showed that Mark had sent the fabricated messages to Richard Cole.

Another showed that Richard had forwarded them to a private investigator.

David frowned.

"Why would Mark hire an investigator?""

Vanessa hesitated.

"He wanted information about David.""

"Me?""

"Your business, your travel schedule, your associates. Everything.""

David straightened.

"How long has this been happening?""

"At least eight months.""

My brother walked away from the laptop.

For a moment, he looked less like the powerful businessman I knew and more like the brother who used to carry me home when I fell asleep on the sofa.

Then Vanessa opened one final file.

It was an audio recording.

The filename was simple:

*MARK_VICTOR_MEETING_09-12.*

"Where did you get this?"" James asked over the video call.

"I recorded it accidentally. I left my phone running during a meeting.""

She pressed play.

Mark's voice filled the room.

"The transfer needs to happen before she delivers.""

A second voice answered.

Victor Hale.

"And if she refuses?""

"She won't have a choice.""

Victor chuckled.

"You said that before.""

Mark lowered his voice.

"Her brother has become a problem.""

"Then deal with him.""

There was a pause.

Then Mark spoke again.

"Once the insurance policy is active, everything changes.""

My stomach tightened.

James asked Vanessa to stop the recording.

David looked at her.

"Is there more?""

She nodded.

"Yes. The last part.""

She pressed play again.

Mark's voice returned.

"Sarah doesn't know the policy is already approved. By the time she realizes what's happening, the house and the baby will both be under my control.""

Victor laughed.

"And what about the wife?""

Mark answered without hesitation.

"She won't be making decisions anymore.""

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

I felt cold from head to toe.

James spoke first.

"That recording changes everything. We need to get it to the authorities immediately.""

David nodded.

"Do it.""

Then he looked at me.

"Sarah, we're going to make sure Mark never gets near you again.""

I wanted to believe him.

But before I could answer, Vanessa's laptop chimed.

An incoming email appeared.

The sender was Richard Cole.

The subject line read:

*URGENT — ORIGINAL POLICY CONFIRMATION.*

Vanessa opened it.

There was an attachment.

A scanned insurance document.

I recognized the two-million-dollar policy immediately.

But this time, there was something different.

The beneficiary information had been updated.

Mercer Family Holdings was no longer listed.

Someone had changed it.

I leaned closer.

The new beneficiary was:

*David Collins.*

My brother stared at the screen.

"What?""

I looked at him.

"Did you ever agree to this?""

"No.""

Then James noticed the attached note.

It was dated the previous evening.

Victor insists the brother must be included. If Sarah dies, the payout will create a conflict that can be used to implicate him.

David slowly closed his eyes.

May you like

Mark wasn't simply trying to steal my money.

He was building a trap that could destroy my brother, too.
