Chapter 3: The Voice Behind the Phone
The phone kept ringing.
Nobody touched it.
Nobody breathed.
The small screen glowed in Madison’s hand, displaying a single word that made the entire room feel colder than the freezer I had escaped from.
*Father.*
Officer Harris looked at her.
“Put the phone down.””
Madison didn’t move.
Her eyes stayed fixed on the screen.
The confidence she had carried all night was gone.
She looked like someone standing at the edge of a cliff, realizing the ground beneath her feet had disappeared.
Daniel noticed it too.
“Madison…”
She didn’t answer.
“Who is calling you?””
Her fingers tightened around the phone.
For a moment, I thought she would throw it away.
Instead, she answered.
Nobody spoke.
The call connected.
A faint sound came from the speaker.
A man breathing.
Then a voice.
“Why is the police there?””
Madison closed her eyes.
I felt every hair on my arms rise.
Because that voice sounded familiar.
Not because I had heard it before.
Because it sounded like someone who had been watching.
Waiting.
Planning.
Officer Harris held out his hand.
“Give me the phone.””
The man on the other end laughed softly.
“No.””
Everyone froze.
The officer looked at the phone.
“You’re on speaker now.””
The man didn’t sound surprised.
“I know.””
Madison whispered, “How?””
The voice answered immediately.
“Because I know exactly what room you’re standing in.””
My stomach dropped.
I looked around the restaurant.
The dark windows.
The empty dining area.
The quiet hallway.
Someone was watching us.
Officer Harris signaled to his partner.
“Check the building.””
The second officer moved quickly toward the front.
The voice continued.
“Madison, you failed.””
Her face tightened.
“I tried.””
“No.””
The man’s voice became colder.
“You panicked.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
The voice ignored him.
“Is Emma there?””
I froze.
Hearing my name from that stranger felt like someone had reached into my home and touched something private.
Officer Harris looked at me.
Then back at the phone.
“Who is Emma to you?””
The man didn’t answer.
Instead, he said something that made my blood run cold.
“Ask her about the photograph.””
Everyone looked at me.
“What photograph?”” Daniel asked.
I shook my head.
“I don’t know.””
But even as I said it, I remembered.
The file.
The picture inside.
Madison’s photograph.
The one showing she was supposed to be dead.
The man on the phone spoke again.
“Emma, your father spent years trying to protect you from this.””
My throat tightened.
“You knew my father?””
A pause.
Then:
“I knew him better than anyone.””
I felt anger replace fear.
“You don’t get to talk about my father.””
A quiet laugh came through the speaker.
“You still believe he was a good man.””
The words hit harder than they should have.
Because my father was the one person I never questioned.
Not once.
“What does that mean?”” I demanded.
The man didn’t answer.
Instead, the call ended.
Just like that.
The silence afterward was worse.
Officer Harris immediately took the phone from Madison.
“She stays with us.””
Madison didn’t fight.
She looked exhausted.
Broken.
Like she had finally realized she was no longer controlling the situation.
Daniel sat down at one of the kitchen chairs.
His face was buried in his hands.
I looked at him.
A few hours earlier, I thought my biggest betrayal was discovering he had another woman.
I was wrong.
That was only the first layer.
“Who is he?”” Daniel asked.
Nobody answered.
Because nobody knew.
Except maybe Madison.
Officer Harris turned to her.
“Start talking.””
Madison stared at the floor.
“I can’t.””
The officer’s expression hardened.
“You helped attack someone. You broke into private property. You participated in an attempted robbery.””
Madison looked up.
“You don’t understand what he can do.””
Officer Harris crossed his arms.
“Who?””
She swallowed.
“My father.””
The room went silent.
I looked at her.
“Your father?””
She nodded slowly.
“But you’re supposed to be dead.””
Her eyes moved toward me.
“Yes.””
The answer was so calm that it scared me.
Daniel stood.
“What do you mean yes?””
Madison looked at him.
“I mean the person you thought I was never existed.””
His face twisted.
“I don’t understand.””
“No,” she whispered.
“You really don’t.””
I watched her carefully.
For the first time, I wondered if she was only a villain.
Or if she was also someone trapped.
That didn’t excuse what she did.
But it changed something.
A person could be dangerous and still be afraid.
“What is your real name?”” Officer Harris asked.
Madison hesitated.
Then answered.
“Claire.””
The name fell into the room quietly.
“Claire what?””
She looked at the safe.
At the file.
Then at me.
“Claire Vale.””
Marcus.
The man who appeared from nowhere.
The man who knew everything.
The man who said the game was over.
I looked at Daniel.
He looked just as confused as I was.
“Vale?”” he whispered.
Claire closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
Officer Harris looked between them.
“You’re related to Marcus Vale?””
“He’s my brother.””
Nobody spoke.
Then I remembered the caller.
The screen.
The word.
Father.
My voice came out quietly.
“Then who was calling you?””
Claire looked at me.
And I saw something I didn’t expect.
Pity.
“Someone worse.””
The restaurant suddenly felt too small.
“Who?””
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
“My father.””
A chill moved through me.
“But you said Marcus was your brother.””
“He is.””
“Then who is your father?””
Claire looked at me.
The answer came slowly.
“Victor Vale.””
The name meant nothing to me.
Until Daniel reacted.
His chair scraped loudly against the floor.
Everyone turned.
“You know that name,” I said.
Daniel looked terrified.
“I’ve heard it.””
“Where?””
He didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“Daniel.””
He looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw genuine fear in his eyes.
“Your father knew him.””
I felt my heart stop.
“No.””
“He did.””
“You’re lying.””
“I wish I was.””
Officer Harris looked at Daniel.
“Explain.””
Daniel shook his head.
“I don’t know everything.””
“Then tell us what you do know.””
Daniel swallowed.
“When I first started dating Emma, her father warned me about certain people.””
I stared at him.
“You never told me this.””
“I thought it was nothing.””
“You thought someone connected to my father was nothing?””
Daniel looked away.
“He told me if anyone ever asked about the safe, I should pretend I didn’t know.””
My chest tightened.
“Then why did you help Madison?””
Daniel’s face collapsed.
“Because she told me you were hiding something from me.””
I laughed once.
A painful sound.
“So you believed her.””
“She showed me documents.””
“What documents?””
He looked toward the file.
“Documents that made it look like your father stole something from her family.””
Claire immediately spoke.
“They were fake.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“And you still used me?””
Claire didn’t answer.
The silence was enough.
Officer Harris stepped toward Daniel.
“You’re going to tell us everything.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
But before he could speak, the restaurant lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then went out.
The kitchen disappeared into darkness.
Someone screamed.
A second later, the emergency lights turned on.
Red.
Dim.
Unnatural.
And on the wall behind me, written across the white paint with something dark, were four words.
My heart stopped.
Because they weren’t written for everyone.
They were written for me.
*YOUR FATHER LIED, EMMA.*
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
May you like
Then Claire whispered:
“He found us.””
