Chapter 2: The Woman Who Wasn’t There

The police watched the footage in silence.

Nobody spoke.

Not Daniel.

Not Madison.

Not me.

The security monitor showed everything.

Daniel entering the office.

Madison following him.

The locked door.

The confrontation.

The moment he grabbed my arm.

The moment she pushed me.

The moment they dragged me toward the freezer.

Every lie disappeared in less than five minutes.

Officer Harris turned away from the screen.

“Mr. Carter, would you like to explain this?””

Daniel swallowed.

“It’s not what it looks like.””

I almost laughed.

People always said that when the truth was exactly what it looked like.

Madison stepped forward.

“This is being misunderstood.””

Chef Raymond stared at her.

“Misunderstood?””

His voice was quiet.

“That woman was screaming for her life.””

Madison’s eyes narrowed.

“Stay out of this.””

Raymond looked at me.

Then back at her.

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You don’t get to hurt someone in my kitchen and tell me to stay out.””

Daniel looked toward the office.

“The safe.””

Everyone turned.

“What safe?”” Officer Harris asked.

Daniel hesitated.

That hesitation told them everything.

I felt a strange calm settle over me.

The safe wasn’t just about money.

It was about my father.

About the secret he left behind.

Officer Harris walked into my office.

“Where is it?””

I followed him.

Behind an old painting of my father standing outside the restaurant was a small steel safe built into the wall.

The officer looked at me.

“Code?””

I stared at Daniel.

He was watching me.

Waiting.

Still believing he had power over me.

I entered the code.

The safe opened.

Daniel stepped forward.

Then stopped.

Because inside was not cash.

Not jewelry.

Not documents showing hidden wealth.

Only a sealed file.

And on the front was a photograph.

A photograph of Madison.

Officer Harris picked it up.

His expression changed.

He looked at the picture.

Then at Madison.

“Who is this?””

Nobody answered.

He opened the file.

His eyes moved across the first page.

Then he looked up slowly.

“Madison Cole.””

The woman’s confidence disappeared.

The officer continued reading.

“Reported deceased four years ago.””

The kitchen went silent.

Daniel stared at Madison.

“What?””

She didn’t move.

“Daniel…”

But he stepped away from her.

“What did he just say?””

Officer Harris held the file tighter.

“According to these records, Madison Cole died four years ago.””

Daniel’s face turned pale.

He looked at the woman beside him like he was seeing her for the first time.

Madison whispered his name.

But he didn’t answer.

Because the woman who had just helped him attack his wife…

was supposed to be dead.

The officer slowly closed the file.

May you like

Then he looked directly at Madison.

“So who exactly are you?””
