Chapter 9: The Woman Who Never Died

The phone went silent.

But the voice remained.

*It’s your mother.*

Four words.

Four impossible words.

I stared at the dead receiver in Officer Harris’s hand.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

It felt like the entire world had stopped waiting for someone to explain how the impossible had just happened.

My mother was dead.

I knew that.

Everyone knew that.

She died when I was a child.

At least, that was what I had always believed.

I looked at Victor.

Then Marcus.

Then Claire.

Their faces told me everything.

They weren’t surprised that she existed.

They were surprised that she had called.

My voice came out quietly.

“My mother is dead.””

Nobody answered.

I looked at Daniel.

Even he looked terrified.

Officer Harris slowly placed the receiver down.

“Someone want to explain?””

Marcus ran a hand through his hair.

“This changes everything.””

I stared at him.

“No.””

My voice became stronger.

“No, it doesn’t change anything.””

Everyone looked at me.

“It proves one thing.””

I pointed toward the phone.

“That everyone has been lying to me.””

Nobody argued.

Because they couldn’t.

I turned toward Victor.

“You knew.””

His jaw tightened.

“You knew she was alive.””

He looked away.

That was enough.

My chest tightened.

“How long?””

Victor stayed silent.

“How long did you know my mother was alive?””

Finally, he answered.

“Since the beginning.””

The words broke something inside me.

The beginning.

My entire life.

My entire understanding of my family.

A lie.

“You let me believe she was dead.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Victor looked at me.

“Because she wanted it that way.””

I laughed.

A painful sound.

“She wanted me to think my own mother abandoned me?””

“No.””

His voice became quieter.

“She wanted you to survive.””

I shook my head.

“I’m tired of hearing that.””

My hands trembled.

“Everyone says they did things for my protection.””

I looked around.

“But nobody protected me from the truth.””

Silence.

Then Marcus spoke.

“Emma.””

I turned toward him.

“You don’t understand what happened.””

“Then explain.””

He looked at the floor.

“Your mother was the reason your father was able to disappear.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She helped him.””

“Why?””

Marcus looked at Victor.

“Because they discovered the truth about Victor.””

Victor’s expression hardened.

“Careful.””

Marcus ignored him.

“Your father and mother found out that Victor had been using the information they collected.””

Claire looked at her father.

“Is that true?””

Victor didn’t answer.

That silence hurt her.

I could see it.

“My mother helped my father escape?””

Marcus nodded.

“But something went wrong.””

“The accident.””

He shook his head.

“No.””

My heart stopped.

“Then what?””

Marcus looked at me.

“The accident was staged.””

The room went quiet.

I whispered:

“My father wasn’t killed in a crash.””

“No.””

“Then where is he?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

I already knew.

My knees weakened.

“Tell me.””

His voice was barely audible.

“He died later.””

I closed my eyes.

The pain came differently this time.

Not like before.

Before, I mourned a man who died suddenly.

Now I mourned a man who spent his final moments hiding.

Fighting.

Trying to protect me.

“Did my mother see him die?””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

“Did she leave because of that?””

“No.””

He hesitated.

“Your mother left because she discovered something worse.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

Marcus reached into his coat.

Pulled out another envelope.

My name was written on it.

Again.

My father’s handwriting.

But this time, the envelope was older.

“This was found with your mother’s belongings.””

I stared.

“My mother had this?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t anyone give it to me?””

Nobody answered.

Again.

Another secret.

Another decision made without me.

I took the envelope.

My fingers shook as I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

I recognized my father’s handwriting immediately.

*Emma,*

My eyes filled.

*If you are reading this, then your mother has finally returned.*

I stopped.

Finally returned.

Not appeared.

Returned.

*I know you will have questions. You deserve answers.*

I continued.

*The first thing you must understand is this: your mother did not leave you.*

I swallowed.

The sentence hurt.

Because a part of me had spent years wondering why she wasn’t there.

*She stayed away because staying near you would have put you in danger.*

I looked at the others.

*The person who threatened our family was not Victor Vale.*

My breathing stopped.

I looked at Victor.

*It was someone closer.*

The restaurant became silent.

*Someone who knew our habits. Someone who knew our weaknesses. Someone we trusted completely.*

My fingers tightened around the paper.

The same warning.

The same fear.

The person you trusted most.

I kept reading.

*Emma, if Daniel is still with you when you find this, ask him one question.*

My heart dropped.

I looked at Daniel.

He went pale.

“What?””

I looked back at the letter.

The words blurred.

But I forced myself to read.

*Ask him what happened the night he saved your life.*

I looked at Daniel.

“What does that mean?””

His face changed.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

“You know.””

His silence answered.

“Daniel.””

He looked devastated.

“I didn’t want you to remember.””

The room went cold.

“What happened?””

He closed his eyes.

“I was there.””

Nobody moved.

“I was there the night your father died.””

My breath stopped.

Daniel looked at me.

“I wasn’t sent to watch you.””

“Then why?””

“Because I was trying to find him.””

“Find who?””

“Your father.””

I shook my head.

“You were there.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I made a promise.””

“To who?””

Daniel looked toward the office.

“The last person your father trusted.””

I felt sick.

“Who?””

The answer came quietly.

“Your mother.””

Everything stopped.

Daniel continued.

“She asked me to protect you.””

I stared at him.

“So you lied to me for her?””

“Yes.””

“You married me for her?””

“No.””

His answer was immediate.

And painful.

“I married you because I loved you.””

I looked away.

Because I didn’t know if that made things better or worse.

A sound came from outside.

A car door slamming.

Everyone froze.

Officer Harris moved toward the window.

“There’s someone outside.””

Marcus looked concerned.

“Who?””

The officer looked through the glass.

Then his expression changed.

“It’s a woman.””

My heart started pounding.

No.

It couldn’t be.

The front door opened slowly.

Nobody entered immediately.

Then a voice came from the darkness.

“Emma?””

My entire body froze.

Because I knew that voice.

Not from the phone.

Not from a recording.

From somewhere deep inside me.

A memory.

A smell.

A feeling.

A woman stepped into the restaurant.

Older.

Tired.

Her hair streaked with gray.

But her eyes…

Her eyes were exactly the same.

My mother.

She looked at me.

And tears filled her face.

“Emma.””

I couldn’t speak.

She took one step forward.

“I’m sorry.””

My anger came before my tears.

“You’re sorry?””

She stopped.

“You let me think you were dead.””

“I know.””

“You let me grow up without you.””

“I know.””

“Why?””

Her face broke.

“Because if I stayed…”

She looked at Victor.

Then Marcus.

Then Daniel.

Finally back at me.

“Someone would have killed you.””

The room became silent.

My mother took a shaky breath.

“And I know who that person was.””

I stared.

“Who?””

She looked at Daniel.

Then at Victor.

Then at me.

And whispered:

“The person who destroyed our family…”

A pause.

“The person your father was trying to expose…”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“…was someone standing beside you all along.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Then my mother said the name.

And the entire room changed.

“Emma…”

May you like

She whispered.

“It was me.””
