Chapter 2: The Woman Without a Past
The question hung in the kitchen like smoke.
“So who exactly are you?””
Officer Harris didn’t raise his voice.
He didn’t need to.
The silence after his words was heavier than any accusation.
Madison stood perfectly still.
For the first time since she walked into my office, she looked afraid.
Not angry.
Not confident.
Afraid.
Daniel stared at her.
His face had gone completely pale.
“Madison,” he whispered.
She turned toward him.
“Daniel, listen to me.””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“No, don’t do that.””
She stopped.
“What?””
“Don’t say my name like everything is normal.””
The woman who had smiled while pushing me to the floor suddenly looked much smaller.
“I can explain.””
Officer Harris stepped between them.
“You can explain at the station.””
Madison’s eyes moved toward the door.
Only for a second.
But I noticed.
So did the officer.
“Don’t,” he warned.
She looked back.
“I wasn’t trying to leave.””
Nobody believed her.
Not even Daniel.
I watched my husband stand there, completely broken by a truth he never expected to hear.
A strange feeling moved through me.
Not satisfaction.
Not happiness.
Just exhaustion.
The man who had locked me in a freezer was now realizing the person standing beside him might have been a stranger all along.
Officer Harris picked up the file again.
“Emma, did you know what was inside this safe?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
He looked at the documents.
“Your father left this for you?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Before he died.””
The officer glanced at the papers.
“These documents are older than that.””
My eyebrows tightened.
“What does that mean?””
He hesitated.
Then he handed me the first page.
I recognized my father’s handwriting immediately.
My chest tightened.
The words blurred for a moment.
*If you are reading this, it means someone has finally found the truth.*
I stopped breathing.
My father had written those words.
Years ago.
Before any of this happened.
I continued reading.
*Emma, I need you to understand something. The person who comes looking for this file may not be who they appear to be. Trust evidence, not promises.*
My fingers trembled.
Because suddenly everything felt connected.
The safe.
Madison.
Daniel’s lies.
The missing pieces I had ignored.
“What is this?”” I whispered.
Officer Harris looked at Daniel.
“That’s what we’re trying to find out.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Emma, I swear to you, I didn’t know.””
I looked at him.
A bitter laugh escaped me.
“You didn’t know?””
He flinched.
“You brought her here.””
“I thought she was—”
He stopped.
I waited.
“What did you think she was?””
Daniel looked away.
That was when I knew.
There was something else.
Something he hadn’t told me.
Officer Harris noticed too.
“Mr. Carter?””
Daniel rubbed his face.
“I met Madison six months ago.””
My stomach turned.
Six months.
While he was still coming home every night.
While he kissed me goodbye in the morning.
While he sat across from me at dinner pretending we were still a family.
“I thought she was an investor,” he continued.
“An investor?”” I repeated.
“She approached me about expanding the restaurant.””
I stared at him.
“My restaurant.””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“I know.””
“No.””
My voice became sharper.
“You don’t get to say you know.””
Everyone went quiet.
“You weren’t just cheating on me.””
I pointed toward the freezer.
“You helped someone hurt me.””
His eyes filled with regret.
But I couldn’t accept it.
Not anymore.
Officer Harris turned back to Madison.
“Where did you meet Mr. Carter?””
Madison said nothing.
“Answer the question.””
She looked at Daniel.
Then at me.
Then finally at the officer.
“Online.””
“Using what name?””
Silence.
Officer Harris sighed.
“Madison.””
She looked down.
“Another name.””
“What name?””
Her lips parted.
But before she could answer, a loud crash came from outside.
Everyone turned.
The restaurant’s front door had slammed open.
A man stood in the entrance.
He was wearing a dark coat.
His eyes scanned the room.
Then stopped on the file in Officer Harris’s hand.
My heart started racing.
Because I knew that look.
He wasn’t surprised.
He was angry.
“Give me that file,” he said.
Officer Harris immediately moved in front of it.
“Who are you?””
The man ignored him.
His eyes stayed on me.
“You’re Emma Walker.””
I stepped back.
“How do you know my name?””
He didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked at Madison.
“You were supposed to leave the city tonight.””
Madison’s face changed.
Not fear this time.
Recognition.
“Marcus…”
Daniel looked between them.
“You know him?””
The man smiled slightly.
A cold, unpleasant smile.
“I know everyone involved in this.””
Officer Harris reached for his radio.
“Sir, step away.””
The man lifted his hands.
“Relax, officer.””
But he didn’t look relaxed.
None of this was random.
None of it.
I looked at the safe.
At the file.
At Madison.
At Daniel.
My entire life felt like a room where someone had turned on the lights after years of darkness.
“Who are you?”” I asked.
The man looked at me.
“My name is Marcus Vale.””
The name meant nothing to me.
But Daniel reacted.
His face changed.
“Wait…”
Marcus looked at him.
“You remember me.””
Daniel swallowed.
“What are you doing here?””
Marcus gave a small laugh.
“That’s the question you should be asking yourself.””
Officer Harris stepped closer.
“You need to explain why you came here.””
Marcus looked at the file.
“Because if Emma has opened that safe, then the game is over.””
My blood ran cold.
“What game?””
Nobody answered.
Marcus looked directly at me.
“Your father wasn’t protecting money.””
I stared at him.
“Then what was he protecting?””
Marcus’s expression turned serious.
“The truth.””
The kitchen became silent again.
My father had spent his entire life building that restaurant.
He had always been careful.
Always cautious.
I used to think it was because he was old-fashioned.
But maybe I was wrong.
Maybe my father knew someone was coming.
Maybe he knew someone would try to take what he left behind.
Officer Harris held up the file.
“Start talking.””
Marcus looked at Madison.
“She wasn’t supposed to be involved.””
Madison’s eyes hardened.
“You said the file would be easy to get.””
Marcus ignored her.
“She lied to you.””
Daniel stared.
“What are you talking about?””
Marcus looked at him.
“You weren’t the target.””
Daniel frowned.
“What?””
“She used you.””
The words hit him harder than anything else that night.
Madison immediately stepped forward.
“Don’t listen to him.””
But her voice was different now.
Desperate.
Marcus continued.
“Daniel Carter was just the easiest person to manipulate.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Is that true?””
Madison didn’t answer.
And somehow, that was worse.
Officer Harris took a step forward.
“Everyone is going to the station.””
This time, nobody argued.
Except Madison.
“No.””
The word came out quietly.
Everyone looked at her.
She stared at the file.
Then at me.
And I saw something I never expected.
Hatred.
Pure hatred.
Not because she had been caught.
Because I had opened the safe.
“You don’t understand,” she whispered.
I looked at her.
“Then explain.””
Her eyes narrowed.
“You think your father left you something.””
She smiled faintly.
“You have no idea what he left behind.””
Before anyone could respond, her phone rang.
The sound echoed through the kitchen.
Officer Harris looked at it.
“Don’t answer.””
Madison stared at the screen.
But I could see the name.
Even from across the room.
My blood turned cold.
Because the caller ID showed only one word.
*Father.*
Madison slowly lifted her eyes toward me.
And for the first time that night, she looked terrified.
May you like
The phone kept ringing.
And nobody moved.
