Chapter 8: The Truth Hidden Under Hayes Technologies
I couldn’t move.
For several seconds, my mind refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.
The woman standing outside the old Hayes Technologies building was impossible.
I had seen her photograph.
I had heard the story.
Rebecca Vale had died ten years ago.
A car accident.
A closed case.
A name buried with the secrets of my father’s final days.
But she was standing twenty feet away from me.
Alive.
Watching.
Waiting.
Daniel whispered beside me.
“Claire…”
I didn’t answer.
Rebecca tilted her head slightly, almost like she was studying me.
Then she smiled.
Not a cruel smile.
Not a warm one either.
A smile that said she knew something I didn’t.
And she knew I would eventually come looking.
“She looks exactly like the photos,” Daniel whispered.
I glanced at him.
“You’ve seen her?””
“Only from company records.””
“Then you know who she is.””
“Yes.””
“And you know why she’s here.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
I looked back at Rebecca.
The woman who had been dead for a decade.
The woman connected to my father’s death.
The woman who somehow knew about Richard, Ethan, and the secrets surrounding my family.
A thousand questions ran through my mind.
But one stood above all the others.
Why did she want me to find her?
I opened the car door.
Daniel immediately grabbed my arm.
“Wait.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“This could be exactly what they want.””
“They?””
He released my arm.
But he didn’t answer.
Because he knew the truth.
We didn’t know who the enemy was anymore.
Richard had tried to kill me.
Ethan had betrayed me.
My mother had hidden information for years.
Daniel had secrets.
And now a supposedly dead woman was standing in front of me.
Everyone had a reason to lie.
Everyone had a piece of the puzzle.
But nobody had given me the whole picture.
“I’m going in,” I said.
Daniel looked worried.
“I’m coming with you.””
“No.””
His eyes widened.
“Claire.””
“If Rebecca wanted me alone, she would have found a way.””
I looked at the building.
“She wants me to see something.””
Daniel didn’t like it.
But he knew arguing wouldn’t change my mind.
We walked toward the entrance.
Rebecca didn’t move.
Not until we were only a few feet away.
Then she spoke.
“Your father would be proud.””
The words stopped me.
Not because of what she said.
Because of how she said it.
Like she knew him.
Like she knew me.
I stared at her.
“Who are you?””
A faint sadness crossed her face.
“You already know.””
“You died.””
She looked at Daniel.
Then back at me.
“That’s what everyone needed to believe.””
I stepped closer.
“You let people think you were dead?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because someone wanted me gone.””
I laughed quietly.
“Someone?””
I looked around.
“My husband tried to kill me today.””
Rebecca’s expression didn’t change.
“I know.””
That stopped me.
“You know?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
She looked toward the building.
“Because Richard was never good at hiding his patterns.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“You knew about Richard?””
Rebecca looked at him.
“Not everything.””
“But enough?””
“Yes.””
My anger rose.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
Rebecca looked at me.
“Because if I had contacted you before today, you would have trusted the wrong person.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?””
She didn’t answer.
Instead, she unlocked the old building.
Inside, everything looked frozen in time.
Dust covered the desks.
Old computers sat untouched.
The walls still displayed the original Hayes Technologies logo.
The company my father built before it became a global empire.
I walked through the entrance slowly.
I remembered coming here as a child.
Sitting in my father’s office.
Watching him draw ideas on whiteboards.
He always said technology wasn’t about machines.
It was about people.
About solving problems.
I never imagined this place held the darkest secrets of my life.
Rebecca walked toward the elevator.
“It’s still here.””
“What?””
“Your father’s private office.””
I frowned.
“That office was removed years ago.””
She pressed a button.
“No.””
The elevator doors opened.
“It was hidden.””
My stomach tightened.
Hidden.
That word followed my family everywhere.
We stepped inside.
The elevator descended.
Lower.
Farther than I expected.
The old building had only three floors.
But the elevator continued down.
Daniel looked at me.
“Did you know this existed?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Rebecca looked at the floor numbers.
“Your father built this room because he discovered something dangerous.””
“What?””
She looked at me.
“Your family wasn’t the only one fighting for control of Hayes Technologies.””
The elevator stopped.
The doors opened.
Behind them was a hallway.
Modern.
Clean.
Protected.
Nothing like the abandoned building above.
My heart started racing.
“How long has this been here?””
“Since before you were born.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
Rebecca walked forward.
“Your father inherited more than a company.””
“What does that mean?””
“He inherited a conflict.””
We reached a large steel door.
Rebecca placed her hand on a scanner.
The door opened.
Inside was a room filled with screens, files, and old photographs.
I stepped inside.
And immediately recognized one face.
My father.
But he wasn’t alone.
The photograph showed him standing beside three people.
Rebecca.
Ethan.
And Richard.
My breathing stopped.
“No.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“He knew them.””
Rebecca nodded.
“Long before you did.””
I stared at the picture.
Richard was younger.
But it was him.
Same eyes.
Same expression.
Same calm confidence.
“How?””
Rebecca looked at me.
“Richard didn’t meet your family by accident.””
I felt sick.
“Why?””
“Because he was looking for something your father hid.””
“What?””
Rebecca walked to a locked cabinet.
She opened it.
Inside was a single black folder.
She handed it to me.
“Your father’s final investigation.””
I opened it.
The first page contained a name.
Not Richard.
Not Ethan.
Not Rebecca.
Another name.
One I recognized immediately.
My own.
*Claire Hayes.*
I looked at Rebecca.
“What is this?””
“Your father discovered someone planned to use you.””
“Who?””
She looked at me.
“Everyone.””
The answer made no sense.
Then she explained.
“Your father knew people would come after the company. He knew money would attract the wrong people.””
She pointed to the folder.
“But he also knew something else.””
“What?””
“He knew the only person he could trust to protect Hayes Technologies was you.””
I swallowed.
“That’s why he chose me.””
“Yes.””
“But why hide this?””
Rebecca looked away.
“Because he believed the danger would disappear.””
“Did it?””
“No.””
The silence answered.
I turned through the pages.
Financial records.
Private notes.
Names.
Dates.
Then I found something that made my hands shake.
A letter.
Written by my father.
Addressed to me.
My fingers trembled as I opened it.
*Claire,*
*If you are reading this, then I failed to keep you away from this world.*
I stopped.
Rebecca watched me.
I continued.
*I need you to understand something. The greatest threat to Hayes Technologies will not come from competitors. It will come from people who know you. People who know your heart.*
My eyes moved down.
*Trust carefully. Love deeply. But never surrender control of what you built.*
I covered my mouth.
Because my father had known.
Not everything.
But enough.
Enough to warn me.
Enough to fear this moment.
Then I saw the final line.
The one that made my entire body go cold.
*The person who betrays you will not be a stranger. They will be someone who calls you family.*
I slowly lowered the letter.
Daniel was staring at me.
Rebecca looked toward the door.
Then she said:
“He knew someone close to him would eventually betray you.””
I looked at her.
“Who?””
Before she could answer, every screen in the room suddenly turned on.
A security alert flashed.
Someone had entered the building.
Rebecca’s face changed.
For the first time, she looked afraid.
“What’s happening?””
She walked toward the monitors.
Then stopped.
Because the camera showed the person standing in the elevator.
A person coming down to the hidden office.
A person who knew exactly where we were.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Who is it?””
Rebecca whispered:
“Someone who should never have found this place.””
The elevator doors opened on the screen.
And the person stepped out.
I saw the face.
My blood ran cold.
Because after everything I had learned…
After all the betrayal…
May you like
The person walking toward us was the one person I never expected.
My mother.
