Chapter 6: The Secret My Father Took to His Grave
For years, I thought I understood how my father died.
A heart attack.
That was the official explanation.
The doctors said stress probably contributed. My family accepted it. The company mourned him. The world moved forward.
And I learned to live with the emptiness he left behind.
But now, standing in a hospital room with my husband trying to erase me, my brother hiding secrets, and my mother revealing pieces of a past I never knew existed, I heard the one sentence that changed everything.
*“Rebecca is the reason your father died.””*
I stared at Daniel.
“Who is Rebecca?””
He didn’t answer.
Not immediately.
That scared me more than anything.
Daniel was never someone who struggled to find words. He could walk into a room full of angry investors and calmly explain a billion-dollar decision.
But now?
Now he looked like a man standing at the edge of a cliff.
“Daniel.””
My voice was sharper.
“Tell me.””
He looked at the phone still connected to my mother.
Then at the hospital door.
Then back at me.
“Not here.””
I almost laughed.
“Not here?””
I pointed toward the bed.
“Daniel, I was pushed out of a helicopter today.””
My voice broke.
“My husband tried to kill me.””
The room became silent.
“I don’t think I have the luxury of waiting for a better location.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
When he opened them again, something had changed.
He wasn’t hiding anymore.
“Rebecca Vale.””
The name meant nothing to me.
But Daniel said it like it meant everything.
“Who is she?””
“She was your father’s closest financial advisor.””
I frowned.
“My father had dozens of advisors.””
“Not like Rebecca.””
Daniel pulled the chair closer.
“She was the person your father trusted most with private matters.””
“Then why have I never heard of her?””
“Because your father erased her.””
I froze.
“What?””
Daniel looked down.
“Not legally. Not publicly. But from the company records, from meetings, from everything.””
“Why?””
“Because he discovered she had been stealing from him.””
My heart started beating faster.
“Money?””
Daniel nodded.
“Millions.””
I looked at the folder on my bed.
The documents.
The signatures.
The hidden accounts.
“Richard worked with her?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Before he met you.””
The room felt smaller.
Everything kept coming back to the same terrifying realization.
Richard wasn’t a stranger who became dangerous after marriage.
He had entered my life with a plan already forming.
“How did they meet?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Through your father.””
I stared at him.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“Richard was a consultant. He helped companies restructure after financial problems.””
“And my father hired him?””
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“My father would have checked him.””
“He did.””
“Then why did he trust him?””
Daniel’s eyes lowered.
“Because Richard was good at becoming whoever people needed him to be.””
The words hit me harder than I expected.
Because they were true.
That was Richard’s greatest talent.
He never forced his way into people’s lives.
He earned his place.
He listened.
He remembered details.
He made people feel important.
He made them feel safe.
Until they weren’t.
My mother spoke quietly through the phone.
“Claire, there’s more.””
I looked at it.
“More?””
“Yes.””
Her voice trembled.
“Your father wasn’t investigating Rebecca because of the money.””
Daniel looked at the phone.
“What?””
My mother continued.
“He believed she was working with someone inside the family.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
Silence.
I already knew the answer would hurt.
“Your father suspected Ethan.””
I closed my eyes.
No.
Not again.
Not Ethan.
“My brother?””
“He wasn’t sure.””
My mother rushed to explain.
“Your father never accused him. He loved Ethan.””
“But he suspected him.””
“Yes.””
I looked away.
My brother.
The person who held my hand at our father’s funeral.
The person who told me I deserved the company.
The person whose signature was now sitting inside a document designed to steal everything from me.
“How long did he know?””
“Months before he died.””
I swallowed.
“And you knew?””
My mother went quiet.
That answer hurt worse than anything.
“You knew.””
“I suspected.””
“You suspected?””
My voice rose.
“And you said nothing?””
“I was afraid.””
The anger came quickly.
“Everyone is afraid.””
I looked around the room.
“Everyone was afraid except me.””
Daniel looked down.
My mother whispered:
“I was trying to protect you.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
The word came out softly.
“You were trying to protect the truth.””
Nobody answered.
Because everyone knew it was true.
For years, I had wondered why my mother left.
Why she disappeared when I needed her most.
Maybe she wasn’t running away from me.
Maybe she was running from something she knew.
But that didn’t make it hurt less.
A knock came at the door.
All three of us froze.
Daniel immediately stood.
“Who is it?””
A nurse’s voice answered.
“Medication.””
Daniel looked at me.
Something about the moment felt wrong.
The nurse opened the door.
A woman entered pushing a small cart.
She smiled politely.
“Just checking on Ms. Hayes.””
I watched her.
Something felt familiar.
Not her face.
Something else.
The way she moved.
The confidence.
The calm.
She checked the monitor.
Then looked at me.
“Your heart rate is elevated.””
I said nothing.
The woman looked at Daniel.
Then back at me.
And I saw it.
A tiny flash of recognition.
Gone in a second.
But I saw it.
“Have we met?”” I asked.
The woman smiled.
“No.””
Too quickly.
I stared at her.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Can we have some privacy?””
The woman nodded.
“Of course.””
She turned.
But before she left, she paused.
“Ms. Hayes?””
“Yes?””
Her hand rested on the door handle.
“Be careful who you trust.””
My entire body went still.
Then she walked out.
Daniel immediately followed.
But when he opened the door, the hallway was empty.
The nurse was gone.
I looked at him.
“Who was she?””
“I don’t know.””
But this time, I believed him.
Because Daniel looked genuinely confused.
My phone buzzed.
Another message.
From the unknown number.
*Rebecca is alive.*
I stared at the screen.
My mother gasped.
Daniel stepped closer.
“What?””
I turned the phone toward him.
His face lost all color.
“No.””
“What?””
“That’s impossible.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because Rebecca Vale died ten years ago.””
The words hung in the air.
A dead woman.
A missing advisor.
A secret my father took to his grave.
And somehow, she was still reaching into my life.
I felt a cold wave move through me.
“Daniel.””
He looked at me.
“If Rebecca is alive…”
I didn’t finish.
I didn’t need to.
Because we both understood.
Someone had been pretending to be dead.
Someone had been hiding for ten years.
And now that I survived the helicopter…
They were coming back.
A second message appeared.
This time, it wasn’t from the unknown number.
It was from Richard.
*Claire, I need you to understand something. You were never the target.*
I stared at the screen.
My breathing slowed.
Then another message appeared.
*Your father was.*
I looked up at Daniel.
Because suddenly, I realized Richard hadn’t just been trying to steal my money.
He wasn’t only after Hayes Technologies.
May you like
He was finishing something that started long before I ever met him.
And the person who knew the whole story was someone I thought was dead.
