Chapter 4: The Lie Inside the Lie

I stared at the message until the words blurred.

*Claire, don’t trust Daniel. He’s the reason Richard knows about the baby.*

For several seconds, I couldn’t breathe.

Not because I believed it.

Not because I didn’t.

Because I suddenly realized I had spent the last few hours rebuilding my world around one simple idea:

Richard was the enemy.

Daniel was the person who saved me.

But what if the truth wasn’t that simple?

What if the person who pulled me toward the light was also the person who pushed me closer to the darkness?

My fingers tightened around the phone.

Daniel noticed immediately.

“What happened?””

I locked the screen.

“Nothing.””

His expression changed.

He knew me too well.

“Claire.””

I looked at him.

The same man who had sat beside my hospital bed.

The same man who had brought me evidence.

The same man who claimed he was trying to protect me.

“How did you know I was pregnant?””

The question landed between us.

Daniel froze.

Only for a moment.

But it was enough.

That tiny hesitation.

The same kind of hesitation I had seen from Richard months ago.

My stomach twisted.

“Claire…”

“How did you know?””

Daniel slowly sat back.

“I assumed.””

“No.””

My voice was quieter than I expected.

“But you didn’t assume.””

The room became silent.

The monitor beside my bed continued beeping steadily.

A reminder that my baby was still alive.

A reminder that I had to think clearly.

Daniel looked away.

“I heard Richard talking.””

“When?””

“Before I found the documents.””

I watched him carefully.

“What did he say?””

Daniel rubbed his hands together.

“He was on the phone.””

“With who?””

“I don’t know.””

“That’s not an answer.””

His jaw tightened.

“Claire, I was trying to protect you.””

I felt a sharp pain in my chest.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I looked at the hospital door.

“Richard said he was protecting me.””

Daniel looked hurt.

“I’m not him.””

“I know.””

And that was the problem.

I wanted to believe that.

I wanted Daniel to be different.

Because I needed someone on my side.

But after what happened, trust felt like a luxury I could no longer afford.

Before Daniel could respond, the door opened.

A nurse entered.

“Ms. Hayes?””

“Yes?””

“You have a visitor.””

My heart stopped.

Richard.

Already.

Daniel stood immediately.

“You shouldn’t see him alone.””

I looked at him.

“Neither should I.””

The nurse looked between us.

“Should I tell him to wait?””

I thought about it.

The old Claire would have said yes.

The old Claire would have hidden.

The old Claire would have needed time to process what happened.

But the old Claire was the woman who stepped into that helicopter believing her husband loved her.

She was gone.

“No,” I said.

“Let him in.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Are you sure?””

I nodded.

“I need to see his face when he lies.””

A few moments later, the door opened.

Richard walked in.

And for a second, I almost hated myself for how familiar he looked.

He wasn’t the monster from the helicopter.

He wasn’t wearing a villain’s face.

He looked exactly like the man I married.

His hair was slightly messy.

His jacket was wrinkled.

His eyes looked tired.

Concerned.

Anyone else would have believed him.

Anyone else would have seen a worried husband.

But I had seen the truth.

I had seen him standing above me.

Watching me fall.

“Claire.””

His voice cracked.

He rushed toward me.

“I thought I lost you.””

I said nothing.

He reached for my hand.

I let him.

Because I needed him comfortable.

“I’m so sorry,” he whispered.

His eyes filled with tears.

“I don’t know how this happened.””

A lie.

A perfect lie.

He looked at my stomach.

“Is the baby okay?””

There it was.

The question I had been waiting for.

I watched his face.

Not his words.

His face.

“Yes,” I said.

“The baby is okay.””

Relief crossed his expression.

But it wasn’t the relief of a father.

It was the relief of someone checking whether a plan had failed.

It disappeared quickly.

“I was terrified,” he said.

I squeezed his hand.

“Were you?””

He looked at me.

“What?””

The smallest crack.

A moment of confusion.

Then concern returned.

“Claire, what are you asking?””

I lowered my eyes.

“I don’t remember everything.””

That was true.

“I remember the helicopter.””

His fingers tightened around mine.

Good.

He was nervous.

“I remember you telling me to move closer.””

Silence.

“I remember the wind.””

Another pause.

“And then I remember falling.””

Richard swallowed.

“Claire…”

“I don’t know what happened.””

I looked directly at him.

“Do you?””

For one second, his mask almost slipped.

Then he looked devastated.

“I think something went wrong with the door.””

The door.

Of course.

The accident.

The story he had prepared.

“I tried to grab you,” he continued.

“I swear I did.””

I studied him.

“Did you?””

His eyes filled with tears again.

“Yes.””

The answer came too quickly.

Too smoothly.

Almost rehearsed.

I nodded slowly.

“Okay.””

He looked relieved.

Too relieved.

Then his eyes moved toward Daniel.

Only for a second.

But I noticed.

“You were here with him?””

Richard’s tone changed.

A small shift.

A tiny piece of anger hidden beneath concern.

“Yes,” I said.

“Daniel helped me.””

Richard forced a smile.

“That was kind of him.””

But his eyes said something else.

Fear.

Not because Daniel was there.

Because Daniel might have told me something.

Richard stepped closer.

“Claire, I need you to understand something.””

“What?””

“People are going to try to use this situation.””

I stayed quiet.

He continued.

“They’ll make accusations.””

“About what?””

His eyes moved away.

“About me.””

There it was.

He was preparing me.

Trying to control the story before anyone else could.

“I love you,” he whispered.

The words almost made me laugh.

Almost.

Because once upon a time, those words would have comforted me.

Now they sounded like another weapon.

“I need to tell you something,” I said.

His face changed.

“What?””

I looked at him.

“I found the documents.””

The room went still.

Not dramatically.

Not loudly.

Just still.

His breathing changed.

“What documents?””

I smiled faintly.

The way someone smiles when they already know the answer.

“The ones about my company.””

Richard stared at me.

Then laughed softly.

Not because it was funny.

Because he was buying time.

“Claire, you’re confused.””

“Am I?””

“Yes.””

He touched my forehead.

“You went through something traumatic.””

I moved away.

His hand stopped in the air.

That was the first time I had ever rejected his touch.

And he noticed.

“You don’t trust me.””

It wasn’t a question.

It was an accusation.

I looked at him.

“Should I?””

The silence afterward was louder than any argument we had ever had.

Richard’s expression hardened.

Only briefly.

Then he recovered.

“I think you need rest.””

He turned toward the door.

But before he left, he stopped.

“Claire?””

I looked up.

His voice was soft again.

Almost loving.

“Who gave you those documents?””

A simple question.

But it revealed everything.

Because he wasn’t asking if I had seen them.

He already knew.

He was asking who had betrayed him.

I stared at him.

And I finally understood something.

Richard wasn’t afraid that I knew the truth.

He was afraid of who helped me find it.

“I don’t know,” I said.

A lie.

My first lie to him.

And somehow, it felt easier than telling the truth.

Richard nodded slowly.

Then he walked out.

The moment the door closed, Daniel stepped forward.

“You saw it too.””

I looked at him.

“His reaction.””

Daniel nodded.

“He wasn’t surprised you found documents.””

“No.””

I looked back at my phone.

At the mysterious message.

At the warning about Daniel.

Two people.

Two possible betrayals.

One truth.

Someone close to me was hiding something.

Then my phone rang.

The number was blocked.

Daniel looked at it.

“Don’t answer.””

But I already knew.

I knew whoever was calling had been waiting for this moment.

I pressed accept.

At first, there was only silence.

Then a woman’s voice whispered.

“Claire, you need to listen carefully.””

My entire body went cold.

Because I recognized the voice.

It belonged to someone who had been part of my life for years.

Someone who knew Richard.

Someone who knew Ethan.

Someone who knew every secret inside my family.

“Your husband isn’t the only person who wanted you gone.””

I gripped the phone.

“Who is this?””

A pause.

Then the woman answered.

May you like

And the name she said changed everything.

“It’s your mother.””
