Chapter 3: The Name Beneath the Signature

The ambulance doors closed behind me, sealing out the noise of the coastline.

The flashing lights painted the inside of the vehicle in waves of red and white. A paramedic sat beside me, checking the monitor attached to my finger while another reviewed the information from the rescue team.

But I barely heard them.

My eyes were locked on my phone.

On the document.

On the name at the bottom.

The name that shouldn’t have been there.

I read it again.

And again.

Hoping my exhausted mind had made a mistake.

Hoping the cold water, the fall, and the fear had somehow twisted the letters into something they weren’t.

But they didn’t change.

The signature belonged to someone I trusted.

Someone who had hugged me when I announced my pregnancy.

Someone who had stood beside me at my wedding.

Someone who knew every weakness Richard could exploit.

My older brother.

Ethan Hayes.

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“No,” I whispered.

The paramedic looked at me.

“Ma’am?””

I quickly locked the screen.

“Nothing.””

But it wasn’t nothing.

It was everything.

Ethan had always been the person everyone expected to inherit Hayes Technologies.

Before my father died, everyone assumed my brother would become the next leader.

He was older.

More confident.

More experienced.

But my father saw something in me.

He saw that I was willing to work harder.

He saw that I didn’t want the company because of the money.

I wanted it because I loved building things.

When he left control of the company to me, Ethan said he understood.

At least, that was what he told me.

“I’m proud of you, Claire,” he had said at the funeral.

I remembered those exact words.

Because I believed them.

Now I wondered if he had been saying what I wanted to hear.

The ambulance arrived at the hospital, and doctors rushed me through a series of examinations.

The entire time, I kept one hand over my stomach.

Every heartbeat from the monitor felt like a miracle.

“Your baby’s heartbeat is strong,” the doctor finally said.

Those words nearly broke me.

Strong.

My baby was still here.

After everything Richard tried to do.

After everything that should have ended us.

My child was still fighting.

“So am I,” I whispered.

The doctor looked at me.

“What did you say?””

I shook my head.

“Nothing.””

But I knew it wasn’t nothing anymore.

I had survived for a reason.

And I was done being afraid.

Two hours later, Daniel arrived.

The moment he walked into the hospital room, I saw the guilt on his face.

Not because he had done something wrong.

Because he believed he should have stopped it.

“Claire.””

His voice cracked.

He rushed toward me.

“I’m so sorry.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

He stopped.

“Because I should have told you sooner.””

I studied his face.

“About Richard?””

Daniel nodded.

He pulled a chair beside my bed.

“I found financial records three months ago. Richard was moving money around.””

“What kind of money?””

“Company money.””

My chest tightened.

“How much?””

“Not enough to trigger alarms.””

That answer frightened me more than if he had said millions.

“He was careful.””

Daniel opened his laptop.

“He created several small transactions through different accounts. Nothing obvious. But when I traced them, they connected to one place.””

He turned the screen toward me.

A consulting company.

I frowned.

“What is that?””

“A shell company.””

“Owned by who?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then answered.

“Your brother.””

The room became silent.

I stared at the screen.

Ethan.

Again.

“How long?””

Daniel looked down.

“Almost a year.””

A year.

Richard and Ethan had been doing this for almost a year.

While I planned a nursery.

While I went to doctor appointments.

While I believed I was building a family.

They were building an exit plan.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“I tried.””

“When?””

“Several times.””

I remembered.

The meetings he had requested.

The conversations he had started but never finished.

The moments he seemed nervous.

“I thought you were protecting me,” he continued.

“I was.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“I knew how much you loved Richard.””

The words hurt because they were true.

Daniel leaned forward.

“I thought maybe there was an explanation. I thought maybe Richard was trying to understand the business because he was becoming a father.””

“And then?””

His jaw tightened.

“Then I saw the documents.””

He swallowed.

“And I realized he wasn’t planning for your future.””

I looked away.

The hospital room suddenly felt too small.

“He was planning for your death.””

I closed my eyes.

I had heard those words before.

But hearing them from someone else made them real.

Daniel reached into his briefcase.

“I brought something else.””

He placed a folder on my bed.

“What is that?””

“Proof.””

I opened it.

Inside were emails.

Messages.

Financial records.

Richard’s handwriting.

My hands trembled as I read the first page.

*Ethan, we need to move faster. Claire is changing her estate documents.*

The next message:

*If she removes me completely, the entire plan falls apart.*

Then:

*The baby makes everything complicated.*

I stopped reading.

The baby.

My child.

To them, my baby wasn’t a person.

Not a family member.

Not someone they were excited to meet.

A complication.

I felt something inside me change.

Before that moment, part of me was still searching for an explanation.

A reason.

A mistake.

Anything that allowed me to believe Richard wasn’t completely heartless.

That part of me died when I read those words.

Daniel watched me carefully.

“Claire…”

I closed the folder.

“Did Richard know you found this?””

“No.””

“Does Ethan know?””

“I don’t think so.””

I looked at him.

“Then why did Richard push me today?””

Daniel’s face changed.

“Because he thought he had no other choice.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

“He didn’t push me because he was desperate.””

I looked at the documents.

“He pushed me because he thought he had already won.””

The truth was becoming clearer.

Richard didn’t see me as a person standing in his way.

He saw me as a problem that needed removing.

And Ethan?

Ethan had helped him create the solution.

My phone buzzed.

Both Daniel and I looked at it.

A message.

From Richard.

My heart stopped.

For several seconds, neither of us moved.

Then I opened it.

The message was short.

*Claire, I heard you survived. I’m so relieved. We need to talk.*

I stared at the screen.

Relieved.

The word was almost insulting.

Daniel leaned closer.

“Don’t answer.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because he doesn’t know what you know.””

A cold smile touched my face.

For the first time since the helicopter, I felt something other than fear.

Control.

“You’re right.””

Daniel looked surprised.

“What are you going to do?””

I looked back at the message.

At my husband’s carefully chosen words.

At the man who thought he could erase me.

I typed slowly.

One sentence.

Then I stopped.

Because I knew this was the moment everything changed.

If Richard believed I was still the same woman who trusted him, he would make mistakes.

He would reveal more.

He would talk.

He would underestimate me.

I deleted my first response.

And wrote something else.

Something innocent.

Something that would make him feel safe.

I pressed send.

*I’m scared, Richard. I don’t understand what happened. I need you.*

Daniel stared at me.

“Claire…”

I looked at him.

“I need him to believe I’m still broken.””

A few seconds passed.

Then Richard replied.

Almost immediately.

*Of course. I’m coming to the hospital now.*

I looked at those words.

Then at the evidence spread across my bed.

The man who tried to kill me was coming to see me.

And he had no idea that I already knew everything.

But there was one thing I still didn’t understand.

Why would Ethan betray me?

What could Richard possibly have offered him that was worth destroying his own sister?

The answer arrived less than ten minutes later.

Not from Richard.

Not from Daniel.

From an unknown number.

A single message appeared on my phone.

*Claire, don’t trust Daniel. He’s the reason Richard knows about the baby.*

I stared at the screen.

My blood ran cold.

Because suddenly, I had another question.

May you like

If Richard wasn’t working alone…

Who else was lying to me?
