Chapter 6: The Truth Ryan Buried Deep

The phone slipped from my hand.

It hit the table with a soft sound, but it felt louder than anything else in the room.

David stared at me.

“What did Claire say?””

I couldn’t answer.

My mind was stuck on one sentence.

*The test showed Ryan wasn’t who you thought he was.*

I had spent days believing the question was simple.

Was the baby mine?

Was the baby Ryan’s?

Was Daniel involved?

But now everything had changed.

The question wasn’t about my baby.

It was about my husband.

The man I had built my entire future around.

“What did she mean?”” David asked again.

I looked at him.

“I don’t know.””

And that was the worst part.

After everything, after the lies and the betrayal, I still didn’t know the truth.

David picked up the phone.

“Can you call her back?””

I immediately grabbed it.

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because if she knows I’m with you, she might stop talking.””

David understood.

Claire was afraid.

And afraid people only told the truth when they believed they had nowhere else to turn.

“I need to talk to her alone,” I said.

David frowned.

“That’s exactly what Ryan wanted. To isolate you.””

“I know.””

“Then why?””

“Because Claire was there.””

I looked down.

“She saw everything.””

My voice became quieter.

“She watched me get buried.””

David didn’t respond.

Because he knew.

That was the part I couldn’t forgive.

Not yet.

Ryan had betrayed me.

But Claire had witnessed it.

She had stood there while I begged for help.

And now she wanted forgiveness.

I wasn’t sure I could give it.

An hour later, Claire called again.

This time, I answered alone in David’s guest room.

“Hello?””

“Emily?””

Her voice sounded small.

Not like the confident woman who used to criticize my choices.

Not like the person who stood beside her mother.

She sounded scared.

“Why did you call me?””

A long pause.

“I wanted to tell you before they found out I talked to you.””

My heart tightened.

“Who is ‘they’?””

“My mother. Ryan. My father.””

I closed my eyes.

“You were part of this.””

“I know.””

The honesty surprised me.

“You know?””

“Yes.””

“Then explain something to me.””

My voice shook.

“Why did you stand there?””

Claire started crying.

“I was scared.””

“So was I.””

Silence.

The words hurt.

Because they were true.

“I know,” she whispered.

“No, Claire. You don’t.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“You were scared because you might lose your family.””

I swallowed.

“I was scared because your family was trying to kill me.””

The line stayed silent.

Then Claire whispered:

“I know.””

For a moment, I heard only her breathing.

Then she said:

“I’ve hated myself since that night.””

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because guilt was easy.

Changing was harder.

“Why should I believe anything you say now?””

“You shouldn’t.””

Her answer was immediate.

“I’m not asking you to forgive me.””

“Then what are you asking?””

“I’m asking you to listen.””

I didn’t respond.

So she continued.

“Ryan knew about the inheritance before he married you.””

My stomach tightened.

“I already know about the money.””

“No.””

Claire’s voice became urgent.

“You don’t understand.””

I waited.

“He didn’t choose you because he loved you.””

I closed my eyes.

Even though I already suspected it, hearing it still hurt.

“Why?””

“Because of your family.””

I froze.

“My family?””

“Yes.””

“What does my family have to do with this?””

Claire took a breath.

“Your father.””

My heart skipped.

“My father?””

“Ryan knew your father years before you met him.””

I stood completely still.

That was impossible.

My father had died before Ryan and I got married.

“You’re lying.””

“I wish I was.””

“Why would Ryan know my father?””

Claire’s voice dropped.

“Because your father was the reason Ryan’s family lost everything.””

The room felt smaller.

I sat down.

“What?””

“Years ago, before you knew Ryan, there was a business deal between your father and Ryan’s grandfather.””

I listened silently.

“There was a disagreement. Money disappeared. Legal problems started.””

“That has nothing to do with me.””

“I know.””

Claire sounded desperate.

“But Ryan believed it did.””

My throat tightened.

“So he married me for revenge?””

“I don’t know.””

That answer bothered me.

“You don’t know?””

“I know Ryan wanted control. I know he wanted access to the trust. I know he kept secrets.””

She paused.

“But I don’t know when his feelings became real.””

I laughed quietly.

“Real?””

The word sounded ridiculous.

“He buried me.””

“I know.””

“No, Claire.””

My voice became sharp.

“He looked me in the eyes and walked away.””

She started crying again.

And for a second, I almost felt sorry for her.

Almost.

Then I remembered the dirt.

“Tell me about the DNA test.””

Claire became quiet.

“That’s the part you really need to know.””

“Why?””

“Because Ryan was afraid of the results.””

“But why?””

“Because the test wasn’t only checking the baby.””

I remembered David saying something similar.

My heart started racing.

“What else was it checking?””

Claire hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Ryan.””

I waited.

“Explain.””

“Ryan told everyone he was certain the baby wasn’t his.””

“Yes.””

“But secretly, he demanded a private test.””

“Why?””

“Because he was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

Claire’s voice dropped.

“That the baby would prove something.””

“What?””

A pause.

Then:

“That Ryan wasn’t biologically related to the Carter family.””

I stared at the wall.

Everything stopped.

“What?””

“The inheritance wasn’t just about money.””

Claire continued.

“It required Ryan to be the biological grandson of his grandfather.””

My mind struggled to process it.

“So the test was for him?””

“Yes.””

“Not me?””

“No.””

My hands began shaking.

“So all of this…”

I couldn’t finish.

Claire did.

“All of this was because Ryan was afraid of losing everything.””

I looked toward the window.

The man I loved had accused me of betrayal.

But he had been hiding his own fear.

“Where is Ryan now?””

Claire hesitated.

That hesitation scared me.

“Claire.””

“I don’t know.””

“You’re lying.””

“I’m not.””

Her voice became desperate.

“But I know where he was going.””

“Where?””

A pause.

Then:

“To his grandfather’s old property.””

My heart sank.

“Why?””

“Because that’s where the original records are.””

“What records?””

“The records that prove who Ryan really is.””

When the call ended, I sat there for a long time.

Not crying.

Not angry.

Just empty.

David knocked softly.

“Emily?””

I looked up.

“I know.””

He stepped inside.

“What?””

“Everything was never about me.””

David sat down.

“I’m sorry.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

He looked surprised.

“I thought I was the center of the storm.””

I looked at the phone.

“But I wasn’t.””

My voice lowered.

“I was just the person standing closest to Ryan when his world started falling apart.””

David was quiet.

Then he said:

“That doesn’t excuse what he did.””

“I know.””

I placed my hand over my stomach.

“But I need to know something.””

“What?””

“Did he ever love me?””

David didn’t answer.

Because there was no easy answer.

And maybe that was the cruelest truth of all.

That night, I couldn’t sleep.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the dirt.

I saw Ryan leaving.

But then I saw something else.

The man I knew before.

The man who danced with me in our kitchen.

The man who cried when we heard our baby’s heartbeat.

The man who whispered that he wanted to be a father.

Which version was real?

The loving husband?

Or the man who buried me?

At 3:17 in the morning, my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Claire.

Only four words.

*“They know I talked.””*

Before I could respond, another message arrived.

This time from an unknown number.

A photo was attached.

My blood ran cold when I opened it.

It was a picture of David’s house.

Taken from outside.

May you like

And beneath it was one sentence:

*“You should have stayed buried.””*
