Chapter 5: The Friend Who Knew The Truth
The name on the screen stared back at me.
*Daniel.*
For a moment, I couldn’t move.
The same man whose photograph had started everything.
The same man my mother-in-law accused me of betraying Ryan with.
The same man they used as the excuse to destroy my life.
And now he was the person claiming he knew the truth.
My first reaction was anger.
Not relief.
Not curiosity.
Anger.
Because I was tired of secrets.
Tired of people deciding what I deserved to know.
Tired of everyone around me holding pieces of my life like they were the owners of the truth.
I showed the message to David.
His expression became serious.
“Do you trust him?””
I shook my head.
“I don’t know.””
That answer scared me.
Because Daniel had been my friend for years.
But I had also thought I trusted Ryan.
Look where that got me.
David studied the message.
“He wants you to meet alone.””
“I know.””
“That’s dangerous.””
“I know.””
He looked at me.
“Then why are you considering it?””
I looked down at my stomach.
Because there was one thing I understood now.
The people who hurt me were counting on my fear.
They wanted me confused.
They wanted me isolated.
They wanted me silent.
But I had spent enough time buried.
I wasn’t going to let anyone bury the truth too.
“Because if Daniel knows something, I need to hear it.””
David didn’t argue.
Instead, he asked:
“Where does he want to meet?””
I looked at the message.
A location appeared underneath.
An old coffee shop near the edge of town.
Public.
Not private.
That made me slightly less afraid.
Slightly.
An hour later, David drove me there.
I kept looking out the window, watching every car behind us.
Every person on the sidewalk.
Every shadow.
Fear had changed me.
Before last night, I would have never thought twice about someone following me.
Now, every movement felt like a warning.
David noticed.
“You’re checking the mirrors every thirty seconds.””
“I know.””
“You don’t have to apologize.””
“I’m not apologizing.””
A small silence passed.
Then I said:
“I’m just angry that I’m like this now.””
David looked at the road.
“Like what?””
“Like someone who has to wonder if every person near me wants to hurt me.””
He was quiet for a moment.
Then he said:
“Emily, someone you loved tried to destroy you. Your brain is trying to keep you alive.””
I looked away.
Because hearing that almost made me cry.
I didn’t want to be someone who needed saving.
I wanted to be the woman who believed she was safe.
But that woman was gone.
Daniel was already waiting.
The second I saw him, old memories came rushing back.
High school.
College.
The years before Ryan.
Daniel had always been the person who showed up.
When my father was sick, Daniel brought food to my house.
When I graduated, he was there.
When I got engaged to Ryan, he smiled and told me:
“If he ever hurts you, I’ll personally remind him what a terrible decision that would be.””
I had laughed.
I thought it was a joke.
Now I wondered if he had seen something I hadn’t.
Daniel stood when I approached.
His face changed when he saw me.
Shock.
Then guilt.
“Emily…”
I stopped several feet away.
“Why?””
He swallowed.
“I know what happened.””
“That doesn’t answer my question.””
He looked down.
“I should have warned you.””
My jaw tightened.
“You knew?””
Daniel looked at David.
Then back at me.
“Not everything.””
“Then tell me what you knew.””
He hesitated.
That hesitation made my anger grow.
“Daniel.””
He took a deep breath.
“Ryan never believed you cheated.””
The words hit me harder than I expected.
“What?””
“He knew the baby was his.””
I stared at him.
“Then why?””
Daniel looked away.
“Because the accusation was useful.””
My stomach turned.
“Useful for what?””
He sat down slowly.
“You need to understand something about Ryan.””
I didn’t sit.
“I’m listening.””
Daniel rubbed his hands together.
“Ryan grew up in a family where everything was about control. Money. Reputation. Appearance.””
“I know his family.””
“No.””
Daniel looked at me.
“You know the version they show people.””
That sentence stayed with me.
Because I knew exactly what he meant.
“They always looked perfect,” I whispered.
Daniel nodded.
“That was the point.””
Daniel pulled out his phone.
“I have something.””
He opened a folder.
Inside were screenshots.
Messages.
Emails.
My heart started beating faster.
“Where did you get those?””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“Ryan sent them.””
My eyes narrowed.
“He sent them to you?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel took a deep breath.
“Because he wanted me to help him.””
“Help him do what?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Control the story.””
I felt sick.
“What story?””
“The story that you betrayed him.””
The coffee shop suddenly felt too loud.
People laughing.
Cups moving.
Music playing.
A normal morning happening while my entire life was falling apart.
Daniel continued.
“Ryan knew Margaret was suspicious of me because of that picture from your baby shower.””
I closed my eyes.
“That picture.””
“Yes.””
“He knew she would accuse me?””
“He encouraged it.””
The words landed like a punch.
“He what?””
Daniel nodded.
“He told me his family needed someone to blame.””
My voice became quiet.
“Why?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because if people believed you cheated, nobody would question why he wanted a divorce.””
I froze.
“Divorce?””
David stepped closer.
“You were planning to leave her?””
Daniel nodded.
“Ryan wanted access to something.””
“The inheritance.””
Daniel looked at him.
“So you found that too.””
My hands tightened.
“What inheritance?””
Daniel sighed.
“Ryan’s grandfather left money in a trust.””
“How much?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Enough that Ryan’s entire lifestyle depends on it.””
I felt a wave of nausea.
“So he needed me gone.””
“Yes.””
“But why the DNA test?””
Daniel looked at the table.
“Because the trust has conditions.””
“What conditions?””
He hesitated.
Then said:
“Ryan only receives the money if he has no legal complications.””
I frowned.
“That makes no sense.””
“It does if the baby changes everything.””
I felt cold.
“What are you saying?””
Daniel looked at me.
“I’m saying Ryan wasn’t afraid the baby wasn’t his.””
A pause.
“He was afraid the baby was.””
The words followed me all the way home.
Ryan wanted me gone.
Not because he hated me.
Because I was an obstacle.
My child was an obstacle.
The family I dreamed about was just another problem on a list he wanted to solve.
When we returned to David’s house, I barely spoke.
I walked inside and sat at the table.
David placed a glass of water in front of me.
“You okay?””
“No.””
I stared at the floor.
“I keep thinking about every moment I ignored.””
David sat across from me.
“You didn’t know.””
“I should have.””
“No.””
His answer was immediate.
“You trusted someone.””
I looked at him.
“That was my mistake.””
David shook his head.
“No. His betrayal was his choice.””
Before I could answer, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
This time I answered immediately.
“Hello?””
Nobody spoke.
Then a familiar voice whispered:
“Emily.””
I froze.
“Who is this?””
A woman’s breathing came through the phone.
Then:
“I know what Ryan and my mother did.””
My heart stopped.
“Claire?””
Silence.
Then her voice broke.
“Yes.””
Ryan’s sister.
The woman who stood there.
Who watched.
Who said nothing.
“Why are you calling me?””
I heard her crying.
“Because I found something.””
“What?””
A long pause.
Then Claire whispered:
“The DNA test was never fake.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“What does that mean?””
Her voice dropped.
“It means the results were real.””
I stood up.
“Claire, explain.””
She took a shaky breath.
“The baby is Ryan’s.””
“I know that.””
“No, Emily.””
Her voice trembled.
“You don’t understand.””
The room went silent.
“Your baby is Ryan’s…”
A pause.
“But the DNA test also proved something else.””
My heart began pounding.
“What?””
Claire whispered:
“The man Ryan was trying to hide wasn’t the baby’s father.””
I waited.
Then she said the words that changed everything.
“It was Ryan.””
A chill ran through me.
“What do you mean?””
Claire’s voice broke.
“I mean the test showed Ryan wasn’t who you thought he was.””
The call suddenly cut off.
I stared at the phone.
Then at David.
Because for the first time, I realized something terrifying.
Maybe I had been asking the wrong question all along.
May you like
Maybe the truth wasn’t about who fathered my baby.
Maybe the truth was about what Ryan had been hiding about himself.
