Chapter 9: The Last Lie Ryan Told
The door shook again.
The sound echoed through the farmhouse.
Every strike felt like a countdown.
Ryan was outside.
The same man who once held my hand during our wedding vows.
The same man who whispered that I was the only person he would ever need.
The same man who watched dirt cover my body.
Now he stood on the other side of the door, asking to talk.
I almost believed him.
That was the most terrifying part.
A piece of me still recognized his voice.
Still remembered the good moments.
Still wanted the explanation that would somehow make everything less painful.
But then I remembered the shovel.
And the dirt.
And his back as he walked away.
That memory was stronger.
“Emily,” Ryan called.
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“I know you’re scared.””
I stared at the door.
No.
He didn’t know.
He couldn’t know.
Because if he understood what fear felt like, he never would have left me there.
“Ryan,” David said loudly, “step away from the house.””
A short silence followed.
Then Ryan laughed.
Not loudly.
Almost sadly.
“David.””
The way he said his name made my stomach tighten.
“You always thought you were smarter than everyone.””
David moved closer to the window.
“You threatened my house.””
“I came for my wife.””
I felt anger rise instantly.
“Your wife?””
The words escaped before I could stop them.
The house went silent.
Even Ryan stopped.
Then he spoke.
“Emily.””
I stepped closer to the door.
“You don’t get to call me that like everything is normal.””
“I made mistakes.””
I closed my eyes.
Again.
That word.
Mistakes.
“Is that what you call it?””
Ryan didn’t answer.
“You buried me.””
“I was trying to protect us.””
The sentence was so unbelievable that for a second, I forgot how to react.
“Protect us?””
My voice shook.
“You left me underground.””
“I thought—”
“You thought what?””
Silence.
I pushed harder.
“You thought I would confess to something I never did?””
“No.””
His voice changed.
“I thought you would understand eventually.””
My heart dropped.
Not regret.
Not guilt.
He truly believed this.
“You still think you were right.””
Ryan didn’t respond.
That silence was his answer.
William stood behind me.
His face was filled with regret.
“He doesn’t understand what he has done.””
I looked at him.
“No.””
My voice became quiet.
“He understands.””
I looked at the door.
“He just thinks he had a reason.””
David nodded.
Because that was the difference.
People who hurt others always found reasons.
They just rarely accepted responsibility.
The door suddenly opened.
Not fully.
Just enough for Ryan to step inside.
David moved immediately.
But Ryan raised his hands.
“I’m not here to fight.””
Nobody believed him.
Not even himself.
He looked different.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
The confidence was gone.
The perfect image was gone.
For the first time, I saw the fear underneath.
His eyes moved around the room.
Then stopped on William.
“Grandfather.””
William looked away.
“You shouldn’t have come here.””
Ryan laughed softly.
“You’re saying that?””
His eyes became colder.
“After hiding from me for years?””
I watched them.
Two people connected by blood.
But separated by lies.
“You knew,” Ryan said.
William didn’t answer.
“You knew I wasn’t a Carter.””
The words hung in the room.
Ryan looked at me.
“You know now too.””
I said nothing.
He stepped closer.
“I was going to tell you.””
I almost laughed.
“When?””
Ryan looked down.
“After I fixed everything.””
“Fixed everything?””
“Yes.””
He looked desperate now.
“I had a plan.””
David shook his head.
“A plan that involved burying your pregnant wife?””
Ryan’s face tightened.
“I never wanted that to happen.””
“But it did.””
Ryan looked at me.
“I lost control.””
I stared at him.
“No.””
My voice was steady.
“You made choices.””
He looked away.
That was the first time I saw him unable to defend himself.
“Why me?””
The question came out quietly.
Ryan looked back.
“What?””
“Why did you marry me?””
The room became still.
I needed the answer.
Not because it would change anything.
Because I needed to know if any part of our life had been real.
Ryan didn’t speak.
And that silence hurt more than any confession.
Finally, he said:
“At first…”
He stopped.
“At first?””
Ryan swallowed.
“At first, it was because of your father.””
My chest tightened.
“I knew it.””
“But then things changed.””
I looked at him.
“Did they?””
“Yes.””
His voice cracked slightly.
“I loved you.””
The words should have meant something.
Once, they would have.
But now they sounded empty.
“Then how could you do this?””
Ryan looked at me.
“I was afraid.””
“Of losing money?””
“No.””
His answer came quickly.
Then slower:
“Of losing everything.””
I shook my head.
“You mean losing the life you wanted.””
Ryan didn’t deny it.
David stepped forward.
“You’re forgetting something.””
Ryan looked at him.
“What?””
“The evidence.””
A flicker of fear crossed Ryan’s face.
Just a second.
But I saw it.
David noticed too.
“You’re not here because you miss Emily.””
Ryan’s jaw tightened.
“You’re here because you know the truth is coming out.””
“That’s not true.””
“Then why did you bring Thomas?””
The room froze.
I looked at Ryan.
“What?””
David looked toward the window.
“Someone was with him.””
Ryan’s expression changed.
A mistake.
A small one.
But enough.
“You’re lying.””
David shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“Thomas is nearby.””
My blood ran cold.
Ryan didn’t deny it.
A few minutes later, we heard another vehicle.
Ryan closed his eyes.
Almost like he knew what was coming.
The door opened.
Thomas walked inside.
The man who had held my phone.
The man who had watched.
The man who had helped bury me.
He looked at Ryan.
Not me.
“You were supposed to handle this.””
Ryan looked exhausted.
“I tried.””
Thomas shook his head.
“You always were weak.””
The words shocked me.
Not because they were cruel.
Because Ryan looked hurt.
For one moment, he looked like a child being criticized by his father.
And I realized something.
Ryan had spent his entire life trying to become someone his family would accept.
Even when it destroyed everyone around him.
“You lied to me,” Ryan said.
Thomas frowned.
“What?””
“You knew.””
The room went silent.
“You knew about the DNA results.””
Thomas didn’t answer.
Ryan stepped forward.
“You knew I wasn’t a Carter.””
Thomas looked away.
That was enough.
Ryan laughed.
A broken sound.
“All this time.””
He looked at me.
“I thought I was protecting my future.””
Then he looked at Thomas.
“I was protecting your lie.””
Thomas’s face hardened.
“You don’t understand what you’re saying.””
“No.””
Ryan shook his head.
“I finally do.””
Everything happened quickly after that.
David moved toward the table where the documents were.
Thomas noticed.
“Stop him.””
Ryan didn’t move.
That surprised everyone.
Especially Thomas.
“Ryan.””
For the first time, Ryan ignored him.
David grabbed the folder.
Inside were copies of the evidence.
The emails.
The financial records.
The DNA information.
Everything.
Thomas stepped forward.
“You have no idea what you’re doing.””
David looked at him.
“I know exactly what I’m doing.””
Then he held up his phone.
“The police have copies.””
Thomas froze.
Ryan looked at him.
“You called them?””
David nodded.
“Before we came here.””
The farmhouse became silent.
Outside, distant sirens began to approach.
Thomas’s expression changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
Ryan looked at me one last time.
Not like a husband.
Not like a stranger.
Like someone finally seeing the damage he caused.
“I’m sorry.””
The words came quietly.
And strangely, they hurt.
Because a part of me had waited to hear them.
But they came too late.
I touched my stomach.
“You’re sorry because you got caught.””
Ryan shook his head.
“No.””
But he couldn’t prove it.
Maybe he believed it.
Maybe he didn’t.
Either way, the damage existed.
The sirens grew louder.
The truth was no longer something they could bury.
Not me.
Not the evidence.
Not the past.
As officers arrived outside, Ryan looked toward the window.
Then back at me.
“I need to tell you something.””
I didn’t answer.
He continued anyway.
“The DNA results weren’t the only thing hidden.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Ryan looked terrified.
“Your father left something else behind.””
David frowned.
“What?””
Ryan swallowed.
“A recording.””
I stared at him.
“Where?””
Ryan looked toward Thomas.
Then whispered:
“He hid it because it proves why everything started.””
The officers entered the farmhouse.
But before anyone could say another word, Ryan added:
“And Emily…”
I looked at him.
“The person who started this entire thing wasn’t my family.””
May you like
A pause.
“It was someone from yours.””
