Chapter 3: The Secret Hidden Behind The Test

The paper shook between my fingers.

Not because I was cold.

Because I was trying to understand what I was reading.

*The DNA test results must never reach Emily.*

Those words felt heavier than the dirt that had covered my body.

For a moment, I forgot I was still trapped.

I forgot the pain in my forehead.

I forgot the fear of Ryan coming back.

All I could see was that sentence.

A sentence that meant my husband had been hiding something from me.

“Emily?””

Rachel’s voice came through the phone.

“Tell me what’s happening.””

I couldn’t answer.

My eyes stayed on the paper.

David watched me carefully.

“You recognize the name?””

I slowly looked up.

“Yes.””

My voice barely came out.

“Who is it?””

I swallowed.

“Dr. Michael Hayes.””

David’s expression changed.

“You know him?””

“He was the doctor who handled my prenatal testing.””

The night suddenly felt colder.

The doctor who had smiled at me.

The doctor who had congratulated Ryan.

The doctor who had told us everything looked healthy.

The doctor who had promised our baby was developing normally.

“What does this mean?”” I whispered.

David looked uncomfortable.

“It means Ryan was worried about something in those results.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

The word escaped before I could stop it.

“No, that doesn’t make sense.””

David didn’t argue.

He just looked at me.

And somehow that was worse.

Because I had spent the entire night discovering that the impossible was possible.

Ryan could bury me.

Thomas could threaten me.

Margaret could accuse me.

So why was I still trying to protect the image of my husband?

Because accepting the truth meant accepting that I had built my life with someone I never truly knew.

“I need to know what was in those results,” I said.

David nodded.

“We’ll find out.””

“No.””

I looked at him.

“I need to know now.””

He glanced toward the road.

“Right now, we need to get you out first.””

He continued removing the dirt.

My arm was finally free.

Then my other shoulder.

Every movement sent pain through my body, but I didn’t care.

I was getting out.

I had to.

Because I suddenly realized something.

The dirt wasn’t the only thing that had trapped me.

For months, I had been trapped inside a marriage built on secrets.

After what felt like forever, David finally cleared enough space for me to move.

“Can you push upward?””

I nodded.

“I’ll try.””

“Slowly.””

I placed my hands against the dirt.

My muscles screamed.

My body felt weak.

But the fear that had kept me alive gave me strength.

I pushed.

Nothing happened.

I tried again.

Then suddenly, the ground beneath me shifted.

David grabbed my arm.

“Careful.””

With his help, I pulled myself higher.

My knees broke through the dirt.

Then my legs.

Then finally, after hours of being trapped, I collapsed onto the ground.

Free.

But not safe.

Never safe.

I lay there breathing heavily, staring at the sky.

The stars looked exactly the same.

That was the strangest part.

The world had changed completely.

But the sky didn’t care.

David removed his jacket and placed it over my shoulders.

“You need a hospital.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

He frowned.

“Emily—”

“If I go to the hospital, they’ll know.””

“Who?””

“My husband.””

David looked at me.

“Good.””

I stared at him.

“No.””

My voice became stronger.

“I need proof first.””

David was quiet.

Then he nodded.

“You think Ryan will try to deny this?””

“I know he will.””

I looked at the paper.

“He already decided I was guilty before asking me a single question.””

Rachel spoke through the phone.

“Emily, listen to me. You need medical help.””

“I know.””

My hand moved over my stomach.

“But I also need to know why my husband tried to hide my baby’s DNA results.””

David looked at the paper.

“There may be another reason.””

I turned toward him.

“What?””

He hesitated.

“Ryan wasn’t the only person involved.””

My heart sank.

“What do you mean?””

David looked toward the dark road.

“Three days ago, I saw Ryan meeting with a woman.””

“Who?””

“I don’t know her name.””

“Then how do you know she was involved?””

“Because I heard part of their conversation.””

I waited.

David’s expression became serious.

“She told him the results could ruin everything.””

A chill ran through me.

“Ruin what?””

David looked at the paper again.

“That’s what I’m trying to figure out.””

We drove to David’s house because he said it was safer than staying outside.

I hated getting into another stranger’s car.

Every instinct told me not to trust anyone.

But sitting there, covered in dirt, bleeding, and carrying a baby, I had fewer choices than I wanted.

David kept the drive quiet.

He didn’t ask unnecessary questions.

He didn’t demand explanations.

He just drove.

That kindness almost made me cry.

When we arrived, I noticed something strange.

David’s house was small.

Old.

Nothing like Ryan’s family’s expensive home.

The kind of place where people actually lived instead of pretending.

He helped me inside and called a doctor he trusted.

While we waited, I sat at the kitchen table.

My hands wrapped around a cup of water.

I kept staring at the paper.

The same sentence.

Over and over.

Rachel finally spoke again.

“Emily.””

“Yeah?””

“Promise me something.””

“What?””

“Promise me you won’t go back to Ryan.””

The words hurt.

Because a small part of me still wanted to.

Not because I trusted him.

Because I missed the person I thought he was.

“I don’t know what I’m going to do.””

Rachel became quiet.

Then she said:

“You don’t have to decide everything tonight.””

I looked down.

“Yes, I do.””

“Why?””

“Because he was going to come back.””

Silence.

Rachel knew what I meant.

Ryan wasn’t coming back to apologize.

He was coming back to finish something.

The doctor arrived thirty minutes later.

She checked my injuries.

She checked the baby.

And when she finally smiled, I nearly broke down.

“Your baby is okay.””

Those four words were the first good thing I had heard all night.

I closed my eyes.

Tears rolled down my face.

“Thank you.””

After she left, David sat across from me.

“You need to rest.””

“I can’t.””

“Emily.””

“I can’t.””

My voice cracked.

“Because while I’m resting, they’re planning what to do next.””

David didn’t argue.

He understood.

“Then we find answers.””

I looked at him.

“How?””

He walked to a cabinet and pulled out a small box.

Inside were papers.

Documents.

Photographs.

And a flash drive.

My eyes narrowed.

“What is that?””

David sat down.

“Evidence.””

“Evidence of what?””

He looked at me.

“Of Ryan.””

My heartbeat increased.

“What does that mean?””

David placed the flash drive on the table.

“Before tonight, I was already suspicious of him.””

“Why?””

“Because Ryan wasn’t just my former coworker.””

He paused.

“He was my business partner.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

David took a deep breath.

“Two years ago, Ryan and I created a company together.””

I listened silently.

“Everything was going well until money started disappearing.””

My stomach tightened.

“Ryan stole from you?””

David looked down.

“I thought he did.””

“What changed?””

“Three days ago, I found proof.””

He pushed the flash drive toward me.

“Someone had been moving money through accounts connected to him.””

I looked at the device.

“And what does that have to do with my baby?””

David’s expression turned serious.

“I don’t know.””

A pause.

“But I think the DNA test was never about whether the baby belonged to Ryan.””

My hands went cold.

“Then what was it about?””

David looked at me.

And his answer made me realize the accusation against me had never been the real crime.

“The test wasn’t meant to prove you cheated.””

He leaned forward.

“It was meant to hide who Ryan was trying to protect.””

Before I could respond, David’s phone suddenly rang.

The sound made all of us freeze.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“Who is it?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

Because whoever was calling wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone whose name made David go completely silent.

Then he slowly turned the phone toward me.

May you like

The caller ID showed:

*Ryan Carter.*
