Chapter 9: The Child Margaret Never Told Us About

Nobody spoke.
The nurse repeated the name.
"Margaret Carter.""
My mother gripped the back of the chair.
Daniel looked at her.
"Mom, is there something you're not telling us?""
Margaret shook her head.
"She's mistaken.""
The nurse was still on the phone.
"Ma'am, I have the medical records in front of me. The patient listed as the biological mother is Margaret Carter.""
I swallowed.
"Can you tell us when the baby was born?""
"August fourteenth.""
My mother closed her eyes.
Daniel looked confused.
"August fourteenth? That's almost three months ago.""
I felt a terrible thought forming.
The maternity services invoice.
The hospital payments.
The confidential medical records.
The emergency contact listed as Claire.
It suddenly made sense.
Or at least, part of it did.
"Mom," I whispered, "were you pregnant?""
Margaret looked at me.
Then she sat down.
Her shoulders dropped.
"Yes.""
Daniel stepped backward.
"You're telling me you had a baby three months ago?""
Margaret began crying.
"I didn't want either of you to find out this way.""
Daniel stared at her.
"Where is the baby?""
"He's safe.""
"Where?""
She covered her face.
"With Patricia.""
Daniel slammed his hand against the table.
"Why is every baby in this family connected to Patricia?""
Margaret looked up.
"Because she helped me.""
I felt sick.
"Why would Patricia help you hide a baby?""
My mother took a trembling breath.
"Because the father was Robert.""
Daniel went completely still.
I felt as if the floor had disappeared beneath my feet.
"Robert Whitmore?"" I asked.
Margaret nodded.
"The man who fathered Daniel.""
Daniel looked at her.
"You're telling me you had a child with my biological father?""
Margaret started sobbing.
"It happened before he died.""
"When?""
"Two years ago.""
Daniel shook his head.
"Two years ago? You told us Robert had only contacted you last year!""
"I lied.""
"Obviously!""
Margaret gripped the edge of the table.
"Robert came back into my life after your father died. He apologized. He said he had regretted abandoning me for decades.""
Daniel looked disgusted.
"And you slept with him?""
"Daniel, please.""
"Answer me!""
Margaret lowered her head.
"Yes.""
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
Our mother had secretly rekindled a relationship with the biological father of her son.
And now there was a newborn child.
A child who was Daniel's half-brother.
A child who had been hidden through false paperwork.
A child whose existence might be connected to a multimillion-dollar inheritance.
I looked at the nurse.
"Can you tell us why my mother is at the hospital?""
"She came in this morning requesting a copy of the original delivery records. She also asked to speak with the hospital's legal department.""
"Is the baby there?""
"No. The child was discharged months ago.""
"To whom?""
The nurse hesitated.
"According to our records, the temporary guardian was Patricia Miller.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
"Of course.""
I thanked the nurse and ended the call.
Margaret began speaking rapidly.
"Listen to me. I know this looks terrible, but I had reasons.""
Daniel stared at her.
"What reasons?""
"Robert was dying. He wanted another chance to be a father. He wanted to leave something behind.""
"You had another child with him?""
"Yes.""
"And you hid it from us?""
"I was afraid.""
"Of what?""
Margaret wiped her cheeks.
"Your father.""
Daniel frowned.
"Which father?""
Margaret looked at him.
"Your father. The man who raised you.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
She continued.
"He knew about Robert before he died. He knew Robert was your biological father. But he never knew Robert and I had become involved again.""
Daniel looked away.
"Don't.""
"Robert promised me that if we had another child, he would leave enough money for everyone.""
"Everyone?""
Margaret nodded.
"He wanted to repair what he had done. He wanted Daniel to receive his inheritance, and he wanted our new baby to be protected.""
I stared at her.
"Then why hide the child?""
Margaret looked down.
"Because Robert's will had a clause.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"What clause?""
"He wanted the inheritance divided only after all biological children were identified. He also wanted independent DNA testing.""
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"So you created fake pregnancies, forged property documents, and used another woman's baby to avoid a DNA test?""
Margaret shook her head.
"No. That wasn't the original plan.""
"What was the original plan?""
She looked at Claire.
Claire started crying again.
"Margaret, please don't.""
My mother ignored her.
"Patricia was supposed to take the baby temporarily. Claire was going to pretend to be pregnant until the estate was settled. Then we would explain everything.""
I stared at them.
"You expected Daniel to accept a baby that wasn't his after seven months of lies?""
Margaret raised her voice.
"We thought we were doing what was best for everyone!""
Daniel shook his head.
"Nobody asked me what I wanted.""
Then he looked at his mother.
"Where is the baby now?""
"With Patricia.""
"Why?""
"Because she was helping us.""
"Then why did she leave?""
Margaret hesitated.
"She found out about the money.""
Daniel narrowed his eyes.
"What money?""
My mother looked toward the window.
"Robert left a separate account for the baby. Two million dollars.""
The room fell silent.
I stared at her.
"So that's why Patricia wanted the child?""
Margaret nodded.
"She was supposed to receive a payment for helping me. But after Robert's death, she started demanding more.""
Daniel looked furious.
"How much?""
"Five hundred thousand.""
"Five hundred thousand dollars to hide a child?""
Margaret began crying again.
"She threatened to expose everything.""
I looked at Claire.
"And you?""
Claire stared at the floor.
"I knew about the baby. I didn't know Margaret was his mother until later.""
Daniel laughed.
"How convenient.""
"I swear!""
He walked toward the door.
"I'm done.""
Margaret stood.
"Daniel, wait!""
He turned.
"I have one question.""
She looked at him.
"Why did you tell me Dad wasn't my biological father today? Why not tell me years ago?""
Margaret began trembling.
"Because Robert's lawyer contacted me yesterday.""
Daniel frowned.
"What did he say?""
"He said the DNA test had already been completed.""
My heart stopped.
Daniel stared at her.
"By whom?""
Margaret looked directly at him.
"By the hospital.""
"That's impossible.""
She shook her head.
"Robert's estate had requested samples from every possible biological heir. They tested you, the baby, and me.""
Daniel looked confused.
"Why would they test you?""
"Because Robert wanted to establish the child's parentage.""
"And?""
Margaret's voice broke.
"The results came yesterday.""
Daniel stepped closer.
"Tell me.""
She opened her handbag and removed a sealed envelope.
She placed it on the table.
Daniel picked it up.
His hands shook as he opened it.
I stood beside him, reading over his shoulder.
The report confirmed that Daniel was biologically related to Robert Whitmore.
But the next section contained something neither of us expected.
The newborn was also biologically related to Daniel.
Not as a half-sibling.
As a child.
Daniel read the sentence twice.
Then he looked at Margaret.
"How is that possible?""
My mother covered her mouth.
Claire began screaming.
"That's not true!""
Daniel looked at the report again.
The laboratory had confirmed a parent-child relationship with a probability exceeding 99.99 percent.
I felt my knees weaken.
Daniel wasn't just the biological son of Robert Whitmore.
He was also the biological father of the newborn.
But Daniel had never been with Margaret.
He had never known about the child.
He had never even been in the same room with the baby.
"Mom," he whispered, "what did you do?""
Margaret began shaking her head.
"I didn't do anything to you.""
Daniel raised the report.
"Then how is this possible?""
My mother looked toward Claire.
And Claire finally stopped crying.
She looked at Daniel with an expression I had never seen before.
Not guilt.
Not fear.
Something much worse.
Recognition.
Then she whispered:
"Because the baby wasn't conceived the way you think.""
Daniel stared at her.
"What does that mean?""
Claire slowly reached into her handbag.
She removed a folded medical consent form.
May you like
And at the bottom of the page was Daniel's signature.
A signature he had never written.
