Chapter 7: The Father We Never Knew

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
I stood in the coffee shop parking lot, holding my phone against my ear, listening to the silence after my mother's confession.
Your father wasn't Daniel's biological father.
Those six words had just shattered everything I thought I knew about my family.
Daniel took the phone from my hand.
"Mom, what did you just say?""
Margaret's voice came through the speaker.
"You heard me.""
"You're telling me Dad wasn't my biological father?""
"Daniel, please come home. We need to discuss this face-to-face.""
"Answer me!""
"I can't do this over the phone.""
The call ended.
Daniel stared at the screen.
His face had gone pale.
I touched his arm.
"Let's go.""
He didn't move.
"Emily, what if she's telling the truth?""
"Then we'll hear the truth.""
"What if Dad knew?""
I didn't have an answer.
For thirty years, Daniel had believed he was our father's son. He had his laugh, his stubbornness, and even the same habit of tapping his fingers against the steering wheel whenever he drove.
Our father had taught him how to ride a bicycle, how to change a tire, and how to shave.
He had attended every school performance and every football game.
If Margaret was telling the truth, none of those memories disappeared.
But something had been stolen from Daniel.
The right to know his own history.
We drove to her house without speaking.
When we arrived, Margaret was waiting on the front porch.
She wore a cream-colored cardigan and held a cup of tea.
It was such an ordinary scene that I almost hated her for it.
How could she sit there looking like a grandmother waiting for her children when she had spent years hiding secrets that could destroy us?
She opened the door.
"Come inside.""
Daniel remained in the doorway.
"Not until you explain.""
Margaret sighed.
"Daniel, your father loved you.""
"That's not what I asked.""
She stepped aside.
"Please.""
We entered.
The living room looked exactly as it had when we were children. Family photographs covered the fireplace mantel. There was a picture of Dad holding Daniel's high school graduation certificate and another of me sitting on his shoulders at the beach.
Daniel stopped in front of one photograph.
It showed Dad teaching him how to ride a bicycle.
He was smiling proudly.
"Was this real?"" Daniel asked quietly.
Margaret looked confused.
"Of course it was.""
"Did he know I wasn't his?""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Yes.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
I felt my throat tighten.
"Mom, sit down. Tell us everything.""
Margaret placed her tea on the coffee table.
"Before I met your father, I was involved with another man. His name was Robert Whitmore.""
Daniel frowned.
"Whitmore?""
"His family owned several construction businesses in Texas. He was wealthy, charming, and promised me everything.""
She looked down at her hands.
"I became pregnant. Robert told me he wasn't ready to be a father. Then he disappeared.""
"How long before you met Dad?"" I asked.
"Six months.""
She took a shaky breath.
"Your father knew I was pregnant when we married. He also knew there was a chance the baby wasn't his.""
Daniel looked toward the family photographs.
"And he raised me anyway?""
Margaret nodded.
"He loved you from the moment you were born.""
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"Then why did you keep this from me?""
"Because I was afraid you would search for Robert. I didn't want him coming back into our lives.""
"Was he alive?""
Margaret hesitated.
"Yes.""
"Did you know where he was?""
"Eventually.""
Daniel stepped closer.
"How long?""
She looked away.
"Twenty-five years.""
I stared at her.
"You knew Daniel's biological father was alive for twenty-five years and never told him?""
Margaret's voice rose.
"I was protecting him!""
"From knowing who he was?""
"Robert wasn't a good man.""
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
"Then why is his name connected to the fertility clinic?""
My mother froze.
I watched her face.
She had expected us to ask about the past.
She hadn't expected that question.
Daniel continued.
"Why was Robert Whitmore's company paying for medical services? Why was his name mentioned in the documents Patricia found?""
Margaret sat down.
"Because Robert contacted me last year.""
"Why?""
"He was dying.""
Daniel stared at her.
"What?""
"He had cancer. He wanted to make amends before it was too late.""
"Did he know about me?""
Margaret nodded.
"He had been following your career for years.""
Daniel looked disgusted.
"He watched me from a distance while I grew up believing another man was my father?""
"He was ashamed.""
"That doesn't answer anything.""
Margaret opened a drawer in the coffee table and removed a thick envelope.
"Robert left you something.""
Daniel didn't take it.
"What?""
"An inheritance.""
She placed the envelope on the table.
"He had no other children. His estate was worth several million dollars. He wanted you to receive a substantial portion.""
Daniel stared at her.
"And you knew?""
"I found out last year.""
"How much?""
"Approximately four million dollars.""
I felt my knees weaken.
Four million.
Suddenly, the strange payments, the fake pregnancy, and the property agreement seemed even more sinister.
Daniel opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter written on expensive cream paper.
The first paragraph was addressed directly to him.
Dear Daniel,
I know I have no right to ask for your forgiveness. I abandoned your mother before you were born, and I allowed another man to give you the childhood I should have provided.
Daniel's fingers trembled.
He continued reading silently.
Then he stopped.
"Mom, why is there a condition?""
Margaret looked down.
"What condition?""
Daniel turned the page toward us.
A paragraph near the bottom had been highlighted.
My estate shall be transferred to Daniel Whitmore upon confirmation of biological relationship through independent DNA testing.
Daniel looked at her.
"Did you know about this?""
Margaret nodded.
"Yes.""
"Then why did you never tell me?""
"Because I was afraid.""
"Of what?""
She began crying.
"Robert's lawyer told me the inheritance could be challenged if your paternity wasn't confirmed. I thought if we handled everything carefully, we could keep the money within the family.""
Daniel stared at her.
"Keep it within the family?""
"Claire and I discussed the possibility of using the inheritance to secure your future.""
I felt sick.
"That's why you faked the pregnancy?""
Margaret didn't answer.
Daniel took a step backward.
"Was Claire trying to get pregnant with me?""
My mother looked toward the hallway.
Then she whispered.
"She wasn't supposed to tell you yet.""
Daniel's expression changed.
"What?""
Margaret stood.
"Claire agreed to help establish a legitimate family connection before the inheritance was released.""
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
"How?""
Margaret looked at us.
Then she delivered another devastating revelation.
"She was going to claim that she had already conceived your child using a private fertility arrangement.""
Daniel stared at her.
"You mean she was going to fake a pregnancy until the inheritance came through?""
Margaret nodded.
"But that isn't what happened.""
Daniel's voice became frighteningly quiet.
"Then what happened?""
My mother reached for the envelope.
"Robert's attorney has been asking questions. Patricia was supposed to arrange everything, but she betrayed us.""
Daniel pulled the envelope away.
"Why would Patricia betray you?""
Margaret closed her eyes.
"Because she discovered something about Robert's estate that none of us knew.""
"What?""
She looked directly at Daniel.
"Robert didn't leave you four million dollars.""
Daniel frowned.
"Then how much?""
My mother whispered:
"Twenty-two million.""
Before either of us could respond, the front door opened.
Claire walked into the living room.
Her eyes were swollen from crying.
She looked at Daniel, then at the envelope.
"Please tell me you haven't signed anything.""
Daniel turned toward her.
"Why?""
Claire swallowed.
"Because if you take that DNA test, everything we've done will come out.""
Daniel stared at her.
"What have you done?""
Claire reached into her handbag.
Then she placed a small photograph on the table.
It showed a newborn baby wrapped in a hospital blanket.
And beneath the photograph was a birth certificate.
May you like
The mother's name was Claire Carter.
The father's name was Daniel Carter.
