Chapter 3: The $450,000 Secret

Daniel stared at the document.
"Mom?""
Margaret didn't answer.
He turned the paper around and held it up.
"Why is your house involved in this?""
My mother stood so quickly that her chair nearly toppled.
"Give me that.""
Daniel pulled the document away.
"No. Explain it.""
"You're making a scene.""
"We're already having a scene, Mom!""
Patricia quietly closed her handbag.
I stepped closer to the table.
The document appeared to be a private financial agreement. It referenced my mother's property, a transfer of ownership, and a payment of $450,000 upon the birth of a child.
I read the paragraph twice.
Then I looked at my mother.
"Why would Claire receive your house?""
Margaret's eyes flashed.
"She wasn't receiving the house. It was a family arrangement.""
"What arrangement?""
My mother pressed her hands together.
"Daniel and Claire were going to need financial security once the baby arrived. I wanted to help them.""
Daniel looked down at the document again.
"By giving Claire the house?""
"By making sure my first grandchild had a future!""
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
My mother owned a beautiful three-bedroom house in a wealthy Dallas neighborhood. It had been fully paid off after my father died, and its estimated value was close to half a million dollars.
Daniel had always assumed she planned to leave it to both of us equally.
We had never discussed it seriously, but that was what she had repeatedly told us.
Now there was a document suggesting otherwise.
"Mom," I said carefully, "you told me we would both inherit the house.""
She turned toward me.
"Emily, this has nothing to do with you.""
I laughed bitterly.
"Of course it does. You're transferring an asset worth nearly half a million dollars to my brother's wife.""
"She's my daughter-in-law.""
"And I'm your daughter.""
Margaret's expression hardened.
"Daniel needs it more.""
The words landed harder than I expected.
I looked at my brother.
He seemed too stunned to react.
"Why?"" I asked.
My mother sighed.
"Because Daniel is starting a family. You already have Sophie. You have a husband and your own home. You don't need anything from me.""
I glanced at Sophie.
She was sitting on a chair, carefully peeling the wrapper off a small chocolate cupcake.
She had no idea that her grandmother had just decided her future mattered less than a baby that didn't exist.
"That's an interesting way to measure love," I said.
Margaret ignored me.
She focused on Daniel.
"I was trying to give you something wonderful. You wanted a child so badly.""
Daniel shook his head.
"I wanted a child with my wife. I never asked you to buy me one.""
Claire began crying again.
"Daniel, please. This isn't how it was supposed to happen.""
He looked at her.
"How was it supposed to happen?""
She hesitated.
"The baby would arrive. We would have our family. Your mother would help us with the house. Everything would finally be settled.""
"Settled?""
Claire wiped her cheeks.
"You wouldn't have to worry about money anymore. We could raise our child without constantly struggling.""
Daniel stared at her.
"So you were going to let me believe I had a baby until the money was transferred?""
"No!""
"Then why does this agreement say the payment is conditional on a live birth?""
Claire opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Patricia stepped forward.
"Daniel, there was more to it than that.""
He turned toward her.
"Every time you speak, this gets worse. What else?""
Patricia took a deep breath.
"Claire was supposed to announce the pregnancy publicly because your mother wanted to make the transfer official at the baby shower.""
My mother immediately interrupted.
"That's enough!""
Patricia continued.
"Margaret had arranged for a lawyer to prepare the paperwork. Once the pregnancy was confirmed through the documents Claire provided, the property transfer would move forward.""
I looked at the papers again.
There was a date beside the agreement.
It was scheduled for the following Monday.
My mother had planned to sign away her house two days after the baby shower.
"Mom," I whispered, "you were going to transfer the house before the baby was even born?""
Margaret looked irritated.
"It was a preliminary arrangement.""
Daniel shook his head.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I wanted it to be a surprise.""
He looked at Claire.
"And you agreed to this?""
She lowered her eyes.
"I thought it would help us.""
"By lying to me?""
"I was trying to protect our marriage!""
Daniel laughed, but there was no humor in it.
"You protected our marriage by inventing a child?""
Claire reached for his hand.
He pulled away.
"Don't touch me.""
The room fell silent again.
Then my mother did something I would never forget.
She pointed at me.
"This is your fault, Emily.""
I blinked.
"My fault?""
"You brought Sophie here. You let her wander around unsupervised. If she hadn't gone into that bathroom, none of this would have happened.""
I stared at her.
"You're blaming a four-year-old for exposing your lies?""
"She should have stayed with you!""
Sophie looked up from her cupcake.
"Grandma, I didn't do bad.""
My chest tightened.
I crossed the room and picked her up.
"No, baby. You didn't do anything wrong.""
Margaret rolled her eyes.
"Don't make this more dramatic than it needs to be.""
That was when I finally understood something about my mother.
She wasn't upset because Daniel had been deceived.
She was upset because the deception had been discovered before she could complete the transaction.
I looked at Patricia.
"How did you get involved in this?""
She seemed surprised by the question.
"What?""
"You helped Claire fake medical records. You helped create a pregnancy. You knew about the house. Why?""
Patricia glanced toward the entrance.
Then she lowered her voice.
"Because Claire promised me something.""
Daniel turned.
"What did she promise you?""
Patricia hesitated.
Claire suddenly rushed toward her.
"Don't you dare!""
Patricia stepped backward.
"You already dragged me into this. I'm not going to take the fall alone.""
She reached into her handbag and pulled out her phone.
"I have the messages.""
Claire's face went white.
Patricia unlocked the screen and placed it on the table.
The first message was from Claire, dated seven months earlier.
I need you to help me make this believable. Daniel will never question a pregnancy if I have the right pictures.
The next message was even worse.
Once Margaret signs the house over, I'll finally have enough money to leave him if I need to.
Daniel stared at the screen.
He read it again.
Then he slowly lifted his eyes toward his wife.
"Leave me?""
Claire started shaking her head.
"That's not what it means.""
Patricia scrolled further.
Another message appeared.
The baby shower is important. After the house transfer, nobody can take anything back.
My mother grabbed the phone.
"Give me that!""
Patricia snatched it away.
"Don't touch my phone!""
Daniel turned toward Claire.
"Did you plan to leave me after getting the house?""
"No!""
"Then explain the message!""
"I was angry! I was venting!""
"To Patricia?""
"She was helping me!""
Daniel looked as though he might collapse.
Then Patricia spoke again.
"There's something else.""
Everyone turned toward her.
She looked directly at Daniel.
"Claire wasn't the only person who wanted you to believe she was pregnant.""
My mother closed her eyes.
"Patricia, stop.""
But Patricia reached into her handbag again.
This time, she removed a small white envelope.
She placed it in front of Daniel.
"I found this in Margaret's office last week. I wasn't supposed to see it, but I did.""
Daniel opened it.
Inside was a printed email from a fertility clinic.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then he stopped.
"Mom...""
Margaret began trembling.
He looked at the document again.
"Why does this email say you requested information about my medical records?""
My mother grabbed the edge of the table.
"Daniel, I can explain.""
He slowly raised his eyes.
"What did you do with my medical records?""
Nobody answered.
Then Patricia whispered the words that made the entire room freeze.
"Margaret already knew something about Daniel that Claire was never supposed to find out.""
Daniel stared at his mother.
"What are you talking about?""
Margaret's lips parted.
And for the first time that afternoon, my mother looked genuinely terrified.
May you like
Because the secret inside that envelope had nothing to do with a fake pregnancy.
It had everything to do with the possibility that Daniel might never have been able to father a child in the first place.
