Chapter 4: The Secret in My Brother's Medical Records

Daniel didn't move.
He stood beside the table, holding the fertility clinic email between his fingers as though the paper might suddenly change into something less terrible.
"What does this mean?"" he asked.
My mother reached for him.
"Daniel, sweetheart, please sit down.""
He stepped away.
"Don't call me sweetheart. Answer the question.""
Margaret looked toward Patricia, then at Claire.
Neither woman spoke.
Daniel raised the email.
"Why were you requesting my medical records from a fertility clinic?""
My mother swallowed.
"Because I was worried about you.""
"Worried about what?""
"Your future.""
He laughed bitterly.
"My future? You've spent the last seven months watching me prepare a nursery for a child that doesn't exist. And now you're telling me you were worried about my future?""
Margaret lowered her voice.
"There are things you don't understand.""
"Then explain them!""
Several guests had begun quietly leaving. Others remained frozen in their seats, pretending not to listen while hanging on every word.
I noticed a woman near the window recording with her phone.
"Please put that away," I told her.
She quickly lowered it.
This wasn't entertainment.
This was my brother's life falling apart in front of forty people.
Patricia pulled out another chair.
"Daniel, I think you deserve to know everything.""
Claire immediately turned toward her.
"Patricia, you've already said enough.""
"No, Claire. I helped you, but I'm not going to let you blame me for everything.""
Daniel looked at Patricia.
"Start talking.""
Patricia opened her handbag and removed a second envelope.
Inside were several printed medical documents.
She placed them on the table.
"About eight months ago, Margaret contacted me. She knew I had connections with a private clinic through my real estate clients. She wanted information about fertility testing.""
Daniel stared at her.
"Why would she need your connections?""
"Because she suspected you might have fertility problems.""
The room seemed to shrink around us.
Daniel looked at our mother.
"Why?""
Margaret's eyes filled with tears.
"After your father died, I found some old medical paperwork in his desk. There was a letter from a specialist.""
"What letter?""
"It mentioned a condition you had when you were younger.""
Daniel shook his head.
"I had surgery when I was sixteen. Dad told me everything was fine.""
My mother pressed her lips together.
"Apparently, there may have been complications.""
I stepped closer.
"Mom, what complications?""
She didn't answer.
Daniel grabbed the papers.
He scanned the first page, then the second.
The medical terminology meant little to me, but I recognized one sentence.
Previous surgical history may be associated with reduced fertility. Further evaluation recommended.
Daniel's hands began shaking.
"Did you know this before I married Claire?""
Margaret nodded faintly.
"Yes.""
He stared at her.
"And you never told me?""
"I didn't want to hurt you.""
"You didn't want to hurt me?""
His voice cracked.
"Mom, I spent seven months believing I was going to become a father. I sold my motorcycle. I worked nights.
I painted that nursery with my own hands. You watched me do all of that while knowing I might have a medical problem?""
"I didn't know for certain!""
"Then why didn't you tell me?""
Margaret began crying.
"Because I thought if Claire became pregnant, it wouldn't matter.""
Daniel looked at her in disbelief.
"What?""
She wiped her cheeks.
"I thought you would have a family. I thought everything would work out.""
Patricia shook her head.
"Margaret, that's not the whole truth.""
My mother glared at her.
"Be quiet.""
Patricia ignored her.
"You asked me to find out whether Daniel could father children without his knowledge. You wanted to know if his medical condition could become a problem later.""
Daniel stared at her.
"Why would you do that?""
Patricia looked uncomfortable.
"Because Margaret wanted to protect the family property.""
I frowned.
"What does that have to do with Daniel's fertility?""
Patricia hesitated.
Then she pointed toward the document involving the house.
"The transfer was conditional on Claire giving birth to a child. But Margaret had another concern. She didn't want the property leaving the family if the marriage ended without an heir.""
My mother shook her head.
"That's not true.""
Patricia pulled another sheet from the envelope.
"Then explain this.""
It was a handwritten note.
The writing belonged to Margaret.
I recognized the way she crossed her letter A's.
The note read:
If Daniel cannot produce an heir, Claire must not receive the property outright. The house should remain under family control until a child is born.
I looked at my mother.
"You were treating your own son's medical condition like a business risk?""
She looked at me angrily.
"You don't understand how difficult it was after your father died. I had to protect everything he worked for.""
Daniel dropped the paper onto the table.
"Everything Dad worked for? Or everything you wanted to control?""
Margaret's face hardened.
"Don't speak to me like that.""
He stared at her.
"You lied to me.""
"I was trying to help you.""
"No. You were trying to decide my life for me.""
For a moment, I thought he might cry.
Instead, he turned toward Claire.
"Did you know about my surgery?""
Claire shook her head quickly.
"No.""
"Did you know my mother was investigating my fertility?""
"No, Daniel. I swear.""
He looked at Patricia.
"Did she know?""
Patricia didn't answer immediately.
Then she glanced at Claire.
"She knew Margaret was concerned. But I don't think she knew the details.""
Daniel looked back at his wife.
"Then why did you agree to fake the pregnancy?""
Claire wiped her face.
"Because I was terrified of losing everything.""
"Everything?""
"Our marriage. The house. The life we were building.""
He stared at her.
"You were never going to lose our marriage because of a medical condition.""
Claire shook her head.
"You say that now.""
"I would have said it seven months ago!""
His voice echoed through the private room.
Then something unexpected happened.
Sophie slipped out of my arms and approached Daniel.
She held up her half-eaten cupcake.
"Uncle Daniel?""
He crouched.
"Yes, sweetheart?""
She offered him the cupcake.
"You can have mine. Don't be sad.""
Daniel stared at her tiny hand.
Then he gently accepted it.
"Thank you, princess.""
He hugged her.
And I watched my brother cry for the first time since our father died.
A few minutes later, Daniel stood up and walked toward the exit.
"Where are you going?"" Claire asked.
"Home.""
"Daniel, wait!""
He stopped but didn't turn around.
"I need you to understand something. I don't know whether I can forgive you for the fake pregnancy. I don't know whether I can forgive Mom for what she did. But I know one thing.""
He looked over his shoulder.
"If I ever become a father, it will be because I chose to become one. Not because someone manufactured a story and put a price tag on my family.""
Then he left.
Claire collapsed into her chair.
Margaret stared at the floor.
Patricia quietly began gathering her documents.
I picked up Sophie.
As I reached the doorway, Patricia called after me.
"Emily, wait.""
I turned.
She looked at me with an expression I couldn't read.
"There's a reason Margaret was so desperate to keep the house in the family.""
I sighed.
"What now?""
Patricia leaned closer.
"Your father didn't leave that house to Margaret.""
I stopped breathing.
"What?""
May you like
She glanced toward my mother.
"Your father left it to both his children. Margaret has been hiding the original will.""
