Chapter 8: The Signature That Changed Everything
I stared at the page.
Emily’s name sat beneath mine.
A signature.
A witness.
A choice.
But it made no sense.
Emily was dead before this document was supposed to exist.
My hands tightened around the paper.
“No.””
Michael watched me carefully.
“I know how it looks.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice cracked.
“You don’t understand anything.””
I pushed the document toward him.
“Emily signed this?””
“Yes.””
“After she died?””
“No.””
I looked up sharply.
“What?””
Michael took a slow breath.
“This was signed before the accident.””
The room went silent.
“Then why didn’t I know about it?””
“Because you weren’t supposed to.””
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
Michael looked at the floor.
“It means Emily was preparing for something.””
My mind raced.
A document.
My signature.
Emily’s signature.
A date before her death.
A hidden agreement.
“What kind of document is this?””
Michael hesitated.
“A power of attorney.””
I frowned.
“For what?””
“Financial decisions.””
The words made my stomach twist.
“Why would Emily need control over my finances?””
“She didn’t.””
He looked at me.
“She wanted protection.””
“Protection from who?””
Michael didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“From Claire.””
I felt anger rise again.
“Then why would Emily sign a document connected to me without telling me?””
“Because she tried.””
I froze.
“What?””
“She tried to tell you.””
“When?””
“The week before she died.””
I searched my memory.
That week.
The week I had tried to forget.
Emily had been distant.
Quiet.
I thought she was stressed.
I thought she was tired.
I thought she was dealing with normal life problems.
But maybe she was fighting a battle alone.
“She came to my house,” Michael continued.
“She told me she had proof.””
“Proof of what?””
“That Claire had been manipulating your accounts.””
I looked down at the document.
“And this?””
Michael nodded.
“This was supposed to stop her.””
I shook my head.
“But Claire never had access to my accounts.””
Michael looked at me.
“She did.””
My heart dropped.
“What?””
“After Emily died, Claire became the person handling everything.””
I swallowed.
“That was because I trusted her.””
“I know.””
“And you knew?””
Michael looked away.
“I suspected.””
The anger came back.
“You suspected my wife was stealing from me and you said nothing?””
“I didn’t know who to trust.””
The answer sounded familiar.
Everyone was afraid.
Everyone was confused.
Everyone had reasons.
But I was the one who lost everything.
I stood up.
“Where is the rest of the paperwork?””
Michael looked surprised.
“What?””
“The documents. There has to be more.””
He hesitated.
Then walked toward the old box.
“There is one thing.””
He pulled out a small envelope.
“This was attached to the document.””
I opened it.
Inside was a note.
Emily’s handwriting.
My chest tightened.
Nathan,
If you are reading this, then something happened that stopped me from explaining everything.
Please understand one thing.
I never stopped trusting you.
But I stopped trusting the people around you.
I swallowed hard.
The next line blurred.
There is someone close to us who has been changing the story before it even happens.
I kept reading.
They will make you believe I was unstable.
They will make you believe I was confused.
They will make you believe I caused my own pain.
Don’t believe them.
My hands shook.
Then the final sentence.
The person who betrayed me is the person who knew exactly how much you loved me.
I looked at Michael.
“Did Emily tell you who?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
“Why not?””
“Because she said if I knew, I would become a target.””
I laughed quietly.
A broken laugh.
“Everyone knew except me.””
Michael didn’t respond.
Because it was true.
I spent seven years living inside a story everyone else wrote.
I looked back at the document.
Something bothered me.
The signature.
The date.
The witness.
“Michael.””
“Yes?””
“Why is Emily’s signature here?””
He looked uncomfortable.
“She signed it in front of someone.””
“Who?””
His silence answered before his words did.
“Claire.””
I stared at him.
“Claire witnessed Emily protecting herself from Claire?””
Michael nodded slowly.
“I know how strange it sounds.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“It sounds impossible.””
“Because Claire wanted everyone to think she was helping Emily.””
I looked at the paperwork again.
A thought entered my mind.
A horrible thought.
“Wait.””
Michael looked at me.
“What?””
“If Claire witnessed this…”
I pointed at the signature.
“Then she knew Emily was preparing against her.””
“Yes.””
“Then why would she let Emily keep it?””
Michael’s expression changed.
“Because she didn’t know where Emily hid it.””
I looked at the box.
The apartment.
The photograph.
The hidden letter.
Emily had planned everything.
She knew someone might come looking.
And she left a trail.
A trail only I would find.
My phone suddenly rang.
I looked down.
Unknown number.
Again.
I answered.
“Hello?””
No one spoke.
Then a familiar voice.
“Your brother told you everything?””
I froze.
The voice was female.
Claire.
But something was different.
Not the frightened woman from earlier.
Not the angry woman from our arguments.
This voice was calm.
Confident.
“Nathan?””
I didn’t answer.
“How did you get this number?””
A small laugh.
“You still don’t understand.””
My grip tightened.
“Understand what?””
“That you were never investigating me.””
Silence.
“You were investigating the wrong person.””
My eyes moved toward Michael.
He looked confused.
“Where are you?””
Claire ignored the question.
“Nathan, I need you to listen carefully.””
“Why should I?””
“Because Emily’s death wasn’t the only thing that was planned.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
“It means someone wanted you alone.””
The words hit me.
“Who?””
A pause.
Then:
“Your brother.””
I looked at Michael.
He immediately shook his head.
“No.””
Claire continued.
“He knew Emily was investigating the accounts.””
Michael stepped forward.
“Don’t listen to her.””
“He knew she was going to expose everything.””
I looked between them.
“Stop.””
Neither stopped.
Michael grabbed my shoulder.
“Nathan, she’s lying.””
Claire’s voice became softer.
“I know you don’t want to believe it.””
I closed my eyes.
Because that was exactly the problem.
I didn’t know what to believe anymore.
Claire continued:
“Ask him where he was the night Emily died.””
I opened my eyes.
Michael went still.
Just for a second.
But I saw it.
The hesitation.
And my heart sank.
“Michael?””
He looked at me.
“Nathan…”
“Where were you?””
Silence.
A terrible silence.
Then he said:
“I was near the accident.””
The room disappeared.
“What?””
“I didn’t cause it.””
“But you were there?””
Michael nodded.
“I was following Emily.””
My voice became a whisper.
“Why?””
“Because she called me.””
“When?””
“Minutes before the crash.””
My hands went cold.
“She called you?””
“Yes.””
“What did she say?””
Michael looked broken.
“She said she knew who was behind everything.””
“Who?””
He closed his eyes.
“I don’t know.””
“Don’t lie.””
“I’m not.””
“Then why were you following her?””
Michael’s voice cracked.
“Because she asked me to.””
The answer confused me.
“She asked you?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He looked at me.
“Because she was afraid.””
“Of who?””
Michael reached into his pocket.
He pulled out his phone.
“I recorded the conversation.””
My breathing stopped.
“You recorded Emily?””
“She told me to.””
“Why?””
“Because she knew she might not survive.””
I stared at the phone.
Seven years.
Another recording.
Another piece of my wife’s final moments.
Michael pressed a button.
Static filled the room.
Then Emily’s voice.
Weak.
Urgent.
“Nathan’s brother?””
Michael nodded.
The recording continued.
Emily said:
“If anything happens to me, don’t let Nathan trust…”
The audio cut.
Michael looked at the phone.
“I never heard the rest.””
“Why?””
“Because someone deleted it.””
My phone suddenly buzzed.
A message.
From the same unknown number.
A photo appeared.
A photo taken from above.
Of me.
Michael.
And Claire.
Standing outside the apartment.
The message below was short.
“You’re getting closer.””
Then another message arrived.
This one contained a name.
A name I had never expected.
The person who had been watching all of us.
The person who had controlled every secret.
The person Emily was really afraid of.
I read the name.
And my blood ran cold.
Because it wasn’t Claire.
It wasn’t Richard.
It wasn’t Daniel.
It was someone who had been dead for three years.
My father.
May you like
And beneath the name was one final sentence:
“He never died by accident either.””
