Chapter 4: The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Gone

I froze.

Every muscle in my body locked in place.

The voice behind me was calm.

Too calm.

The kind of calm that didn’t belong in a dark apartment where someone had just appeared without making a sound.

I slowly turned around.

And for a moment, my mind refused to accept what I was seeing.

A man stood in the doorway of the bedroom.

Older than I remembered.

Thinner.

His face carried seven years of exhaustion.

But I knew him.

I knew that face.

“Daniel?””

The name left my mouth like a question.

Daniel Cross stared at me.

The same man whose name appeared on the financial records.

The same man connected to the missing two million dollars.

The same man who was supposed to have disappeared from my life after Emily’s death.

He didn’t move.

He just looked at me with an expression I couldn’t understand.

Relief.

Fear.

And something that looked almost like guilt.

“You shouldn’t be here,” he said.

I tightened my grip on the photograph.

“You’re telling me that?””

Daniel looked toward the hallway.

Then back at me.

“You need to leave.””

I almost laughed.

“Seven years ago, my wife died. Today I find a picture of her standing with you and Claire three days before it happened. Then you appear in the apartment like you’ve been waiting for me.””

My voice became colder.

“And you’re telling me I need to leave?””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“You don’t understand what you’re dealing with.””

“Then explain it.””

He looked away.

That was the answer.

He knew something.

Something he had hidden for years.

I stepped closer.

“What happened that night?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

“What did Claire do?””

His eyes snapped back to mine.

“You still think Claire is the worst person involved?””

The question hit me harder than I expected.

“What does that mean?””

Before he could respond, my phone slipped from my hand slightly.

Claire was still on the line.

She had heard everything.

“Nathan?”” her voice came through the speaker.

Daniel’s face changed when he heard her.

Fear.

Real fear.

He immediately walked toward me.

“Hang up.””

I stepped back.

“Why?””

“Because if she knows I’m here, we’re both in danger.””

The words sounded insane.

But the way he said them made me believe he meant them.

I ended the call.

The apartment became silent again.

I stared at him.

“Start talking.””

Daniel rubbed his face.

“I knew this day would come.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Emily asked me not to.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“She made me promise.””

I felt anger rise.

“My wife was dead, and you kept secrets from me because she asked you to?””

Daniel looked at me.

“She was trying to protect you.””

I shook my head.

“From what?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he walked to the kitchen and sat down.

The confidence was gone.

The businessman everyone trusted was gone.

He looked like someone who had spent years carrying something too heavy.

“Before I tell you anything, you need to understand one thing.””

I crossed my arms.

“What?””

“Emily knew she was in trouble.””

The room became colder.

“She knew?””

“Yes.””

“How long?””

“Months.””

I stared at him.

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

Daniel looked down.

“Because she thought telling you would put you in more danger.””

I felt something break inside me.

My entire marriage.

My memories.

Everything I believed about the last months of Emily’s life.

I had spent seven years thinking I failed to save her because I didn’t get there in time.

Now I wondered if she had been trying to save me.

“What was she investigating?””

Daniel took a deep breath.

“Money.””

I almost smiled.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

“Because money was only the beginning.””

He looked at the photograph in my hand.

“Emily discovered someone was using her accounts to move money.””

“Claire?””

Daniel hesitated.

That hesitation told me everything.

“She was involved.””

My fists tightened.

“But she wasn’t alone.””

I looked at him.

“Who else?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Instead, he reached into his jacket and pulled out a small envelope.

He placed it on the table.

“What is that?””

“Something Emily gave me.””

I stared at the envelope.

“You had this for seven years?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because she told me only to give it to you when you found the photograph.””

I looked at him.

“How did she know I would find it?””

Daniel gave a sad smile.

“Because Emily knew you better than anyone.””

My throat tightened.

That sounded exactly like her.

She always believed there was a solution.

Even when the world was falling apart.

I picked up the envelope.

Inside was a flash drive.

Nothing else.

“What’s on this?””

Daniel’s expression became serious.

“The truth.””

I almost asked what he meant.

But then we heard something.

A car door closing outside.

Daniel immediately stood.

His face changed.

“Someone followed you.””

I looked toward the window.

“How would anyone know I’m here?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because he already knew.

And that scared me.

I grabbed his arm.

“Who?””

He looked at me.

“Someone who has been watching you for years.””

A knock came from the front door.

Three slow knocks.

Not a neighbor.

Not a friend.

A warning.

Daniel whispered:

“Do not open that door.””

I stared at him.

“Who is it?””

His face turned pale.

“Your wife.””

I felt my stomach drop.

Claire.

Of course.

I moved toward the door.

Daniel grabbed my shoulder.

“Nathan, listen to me. If Claire is here, she already knows something.””

“How?””

“Because she wouldn’t come here unless she knew you found something.””

The knocking came again.

This time harder.

“Nathan?””

Claire’s voice.

Soft.

Controlled.

“Open the door.””

I looked through the peephole.

There she was.

My wife.

The woman who had kissed me goodbye that morning.

The woman who made breakfast for my children.

The woman who told me she loved me.

Standing outside Emily’s old apartment.

I stepped away.

Daniel whispered:

“Now you understand.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I understand nothing.””

Claire knocked again.

“Nathan, I know you’re inside.””

My blood ran cold.

Because I had never told her where I was going.

I looked at Daniel.

“How did she know?””

He didn’t answer.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

One sentence.

My hands started shaking.

“Ask Daniel what happened to the night Emily tried to escape.””

I looked up.

Daniel was staring at me.

“You received a message?””

I slowly turned the phone toward him.

The moment he read it, all color disappeared from his face.

“What?””

“What does it mean?””

Daniel didn’t speak.

The knocking stopped.

For a few seconds, there was silence.

Then Claire spoke through the door.

“Nathan, I know about Daniel.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“And I know he has been lying to you.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

Claire continued.

“But if you let him walk out of that apartment, you’ll never know what really happened to Emily.””

I stared at the door.

Then at Daniel.

Two people.

Two stories.

Both claiming they knew the truth.

Both hiding something.

I opened my mouth to speak.

But before I could, Daniel whispered:

“Don’t believe her.””

Claire’s voice came again.

“Nathan…”

A pause.

Then she said something that made my entire body go numb.

“Ask him why Emily was running away the night she died.””

I looked at Daniel.

His face had gone completely pale.

Because whatever Claire was talking about…

He knew.

And when he finally spoke, his voice was barely audible.

“Because she found out who was really responsible.””

The door handle slowly began to turn.

Someone outside was unlocking it.

And Daniel whispered the words that changed everything.

“Nathan… the person Emily was afraid of wasn’t Claire.””

I stared at him.

“Then who was it?””

May you like

Daniel looked directly into my eyes.

“It was someone you trusted with your life.””
