Chapter 6: The Last Call From The Woman I Lost

For seven years, I had lived with the same image in my mind.

Emily alone on a dark road.

A terrible accident.

A life ending too quickly.

A goodbye she never got to say.

I had replayed that night thousands of times.

I imagined the fear she felt.

I imagined the pain.

I imagined her final moments.

But I never imagined this.

She had been alive.

She had reached for her phone.

She had called me.

And I hadn’t answered.

I stared at Daniel, unable to speak.

My brain rejected every word he had just said.

“No.””

The word came out quietly.

Daniel looked at me.

“Nathan—”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“That’s not possible.””

Daniel held the old phone in his hand.

“It is.””

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””

His expression changed.

Because there was no good answer.

“Because the call disappeared.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“The call record was deleted.””

My heart started pounding.

“Deleted by who?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

But he didn’t need to.

I already knew.

I looked through the windshield.

Claire was still standing outside the car.

Watching me.

Waiting.

The woman who had comforted me after losing Emily.

The woman who held my children when they cried.

The woman who told me we would heal together.

My wife.

My family.

My biggest mistake.

I stepped out of the car.

Claire immediately looked at me.

“Nathan—”

“Did you find Emily that night?””

Her face changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

The hesitation.

The fear.

“Where did you hear that?””

I moved closer.

“Answer me.””

She looked at Daniel.

Then back at me.

“Nathan, you don’t understand what happened.””

“Then explain it.””

“I was trying to help her.””

The words hit me harder than I expected.

Because they weren’t a denial.

“You were there.””

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

The confession was so quiet that for a second, I almost didn’t believe it.

Seven years.

Seven years of lies.

And she admitted it with one word.

“You were there when Emily crashed?””

Claire looked down.

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

She swallowed.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

She looked at Daniel.

“Of him.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“Don’t do this.””

Claire ignored him.

“I found Emily after the crash.””

My hands curled into fists.

“What happened?””

She closed her eyes.

“I was driving when I saw her car.””

“Why were you driving there?””

Silence.

The question hung between us.

Claire looked away.

“I was following her.””

My stomach dropped.

“Following her?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She wiped her tears.

“Because she knew I was involved.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Nathan, don’t listen to her.””

I turned toward him.

“Why?””

“Because she’s trying to control the story.””

Claire laughed bitterly.

“That’s exactly what you’ve been doing for seven years.””

The two of them stared at each other.

And suddenly I understood something.

They weren’t just hiding secrets.

They were fighting over who got to tell me the truth first.

“Enough,” I said.

Both of them went silent.

“I want the truth.””

Neither spoke.

“I want everything.””

I looked at Claire.

“Start with Emily.””

She looked like she had aged years in a few seconds.

“I wasn’t trying to hurt her.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“I know.””

Her voice broke.

“I made mistakes.””

“What kind?””

Claire looked down.

“I helped Richard move money.””

The admission landed like a physical blow.

My wife.

My father-in-law.

My dead wife’s sister.

Everyone connected to my life had secrets.

“How much?””

She whispered:

“Almost four million dollars.””

I stared at her.

“Four million?””

“Yes.””

“From Emily?””

“From accounts connected to her.””

I felt sick.

“Why?””

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because Richard promised he could fix everything.””

“That’s what everyone says.””

“He said if I helped him, he would protect me.””

“From what?””

She didn’t answer.

Then Daniel did.

“From being exposed.””

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Claire wasn’t the mastermind.””

My jaw tightened.

“You’re defending her?””

“No.””

He looked at Claire.

“She made a choice.””

Claire looked away.

“And that choice destroyed Emily’s trust.””

I turned back to Claire.

“What happened the night she died?””

Claire was silent.

For a moment, I thought she wouldn’t answer.

Then she whispered:

“Emily called me.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She knew about the money.””

The air felt heavy.

“She knew Richard was involved?””

“Yes.””

“And you?””

Claire nodded.

“She found my name in the records.””

I felt anger rise.

“She confronted you.””

“Yes.””

“What did she say?””

Claire closed her eyes.

“She said she was going to tell you everything.””

My voice became cold.

“And you stopped her?””

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

Too quickly.

“I didn’t.””

“Then what happened?””

Claire looked toward the ground.

“She left.””

“Then?””

“I followed her.””

“Why?””

“Because I wanted to explain.””

I almost laughed.

“Explain?””

“I thought I could fix it.””

“You thought you could fix my wife discovering you betrayed her?””

Claire looked at me.

“I was scared.””

There it was again.

Fear.

Everyone was afraid.

Everyone except Emily.

“Then what happened?””

Claire’s voice became smaller.

“I saw her car hit the barrier.””

I waited.

“And?””

“I ran to her.””

My heart was pounding.

“She was alive.””

I closed my eyes.

The words hurt.

“She was alive?””

“Yes.””

“Was she conscious?””

Claire nodded.

“She opened her eyes.””

My breath caught.

“What did she say?””

Claire looked at me.

And for a second, I saw something real in her expression.

Regret.

“She asked me to call you.””

Everything inside me broke.

“She wanted me?””

“Yes.””

“Did you?””

Claire looked away.

That was the answer.

My voice became a whisper.

“You didn’t.””

“No.””

“Why?””

Her tears finally fell.

“Because she knew too much.””

The silence that followed was unbearable.

Daniel looked at her with disgust.

“You let her die.””

Claire shook her head.

“No.””

“You stood there.””

“I was trying to save her.””

“But you didn’t call him.””

Claire covered her face.

“I panicked.””

I felt numb.

My wife’s final moments.

The woman I loved.

Calling for me.

And the person beside her chose silence.

I turned away.

I couldn’t look at her.

“Where is the phone?””

Daniel handed it to me.

“We found it later.””

I looked at him.

“Who found it?””

He hesitated.

“Richard.””

Of course.

Another secret.

Another person who knew.

“Why didn’t he tell me?””

Daniel looked at Claire.

“Because the phone contained evidence.””

I turned it on.

The screen was cracked.

The battery was dead.

But somehow, it still worked.

I plugged it into a portable charger Daniel gave me.

Minutes passed.

Nobody spoke.

Then the phone turned on.

My hands shook as I searched through it.

There was one missed call.

One outgoing call.

My number.

The timestamp.

The exact moment Emily tried to reach me.

I stared at it.

Seven years of guilt.

Seven years of wondering why I didn’t get there.

And now I knew.

She had tried.

I pressed the voicemail icon.

There was one saved message.

A recording.

My finger hovered over the screen.

“Are you sure you want to hear this?”” Daniel asked.

I looked at him.

“No.””

I swallowed.

“I need to.””

I pressed play.

Static filled the car.

Then a sound.

A broken breath.

And then…

Emily’s voice.

Weak.

Scared.

But alive.

“Nathan…”

My knees almost gave out.

Her voice.

After seven years.

I heard my wife again.

“Please answer…”

A pause.

A quiet sob.

“I don’t have much time.””

I covered my mouth.

Tears burned my eyes.

Then Emily whispered:

“I was wrong about who was helping me.””

My heart stopped.

“I thought it was Claire.””

A pause.

“She wasn’t the one who started this.””

Static.

A noise in the background.

Then Emily’s voice became urgent.

“Nathan, listen to me.””

I held my breath.

“The person who planned this…”

A loud sound interrupted the recording.

Then Emily whispered the final words.

“The person who wants me gone…”

The message cut.

I stared at the phone.

Everyone was silent.

Because we all heard the same thing.

Emily wasn’t afraid of Claire.

She wasn’t afraid of Richard.

She was afraid of someone else.

Someone who was still out there.

Someone who had planned everything.

Then the phone screen flashed.

A new message appeared.

Sent seven years ago.

But never delivered.

My hands shook as I opened it.

It was from Emily.

One sentence.

One final warning.

“Nathan, don’t trust the person who is standing beside you right now.””

I slowly looked up.

Daniel was beside me.

Claire was beside me.

Both of them were staring at me.

And then I realized something terrifying.

Emily’s message wasn’t old.

It had been scheduled to send after her death.

And it had been waiting for the right moment.

The moment when I finally discovered the truth.

The message continued.

“Because the person closest to you already knows why I died.””

I looked between Daniel and Claire.

Then my phone buzzed again.

Another message appeared.

This time from an unknown number.

May you like

Only five words.

“Ask your brother about Emily.””
