Chapter 5: The Secret Hidden Inside My Own Family

The door handle moved.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Whoever was outside wasn’t trying to break in.

They wanted me to know they could enter whenever they wanted.

I stared at Daniel.

The sentence he had just spoken kept repeating in my head.

The person Emily was afraid of wasn’t Claire.

It was someone you trusted with your life.

Someone I trusted.

Someone inside my family.

My thoughts raced through every person I loved.

My parents.

My siblings.

My closest friends.

The people who stood beside me after Emily died.

The people who told me they were there for me.

The people who helped me survive the darkest year of my life.

One of them had betrayed me.

The lock clicked.

I reacted without thinking.

I grabbed Daniel’s arm and pulled him toward the back hallway.

“Where does this go?””

He pointed toward a small door near the kitchen.

“Storage room. There’s a back exit.””

“You knew about this?””

“I knew Emily kept emergency plans.””

That answer bothered me.

But I didn’t have time to question it.

We moved quietly.

Behind us, the front door opened.

I heard Claire step inside.

“Nathan?””

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

“Please don’t make this harder than it needs to be.””

Daniel and I stopped.

I looked at him.

His face was tense.

“She knows we’re here,” he whispered.

“I know.””

“No. You don’t understand.””

He looked toward the sound of Claire’s footsteps.

“She isn’t here to talk.””

Before I could respond, Claire called out again.

“I know you’re scared.””

A bitter laugh almost escaped me.

Scared?

After everything I had learned?

She was the one who should be scared.

But then I remembered something.

Claire had always been good at controlling situations.

She didn’t panic.

She planned.

And that meant she had a reason for being here.

I pushed open the back door.

Cold air rushed in.

But before I stepped outside, I stopped.

Because I needed answers.

I turned toward Daniel.

“You’re coming with me.””

He nodded.

“I was hoping you’d say that.””

We left through the alley behind the apartment building.

For several minutes, neither of us spoke.

We walked until we reached my car.

Only when we were inside did I finally turn to him.

“Start from the beginning.””

Daniel stared through the windshield.

“The beginning was seven years ago.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“The real beginning.””

He looked at me.

“The real beginning was when Emily discovered Claire wasn’t who she claimed to be.””

My stomach tightened.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“How long?””

“Before you married her.””

The words hit me harder than anything else.

I turned toward him.

“You knew Claire before I did?””

Daniel nodded.

“She worked with my company.””

“What?””

“She was hired as an outside financial consultant.””

I felt numb.

“She told me she was a nurse.””

“She was.””

“Then how did she work with your company?””

“Because she had multiple jobs.””

I stared at him.

“And Emily knew?””

“Yes.””

My voice lowered.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””

Daniel looked away.

“Because Emily thought she could handle it.””

“That doesn’t answer my question.””

He sighed.

“Because she was afraid you wouldn’t believe us.””

The sentence hurt because a part of me knew it was true.

Seven years ago, I wasn’t thinking clearly.

I was exhausted.

Broken.

Grieving.

If someone had told me Claire was dangerous, I probably would have defended her.

Because she was the person holding my family together.

At least, that was what I believed.

“What did Emily find?””

Daniel opened the envelope he had given me.

He removed the flash drive.

“She found financial records connecting Claire to someone else.””

“Who?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Your father.””

I stopped.

“What?””

“My father?””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Your father-in-law.””

My wife’s father.

Richard.

Emily’s father.

The man who hugged me at her funeral.

The man who stood beside me and cried.

The man who told me:

“We’ll get through this together.””

I felt sick.

“No.””

Daniel said nothing.

“Richard had nothing to do with this.””

“You believe that because Emily protected you.””

“Stop saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

I hit the steering wheel.

“Why would my father-in-law steal money from his own daughter?””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Because it wasn’t about money.””

“Then what was it about?””

He looked down.

“Control.””

The word hung between us.

I remembered things I had ignored.

Emily arguing with her father.

The tension between them.

The phone calls she ended quickly when I entered the room.

The way she once said:

“Sometimes the people closest to you are the ones who know exactly where to hurt you.””

At the time, I thought she was talking about normal family problems.

Now I wondered.

“Tell me everything.””

Daniel leaned back.

“Emily discovered that Richard had been using company accounts connected to her investments.””

“Why?””

“To cover debts.””

“How much?””

Daniel hesitated.

“More than he could repay.””

I closed my eyes.

“Millions.””

“Yes.””

The room felt smaller.

“And Claire?””

“She helped him move the money.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Why?””

“Because Richard promised her something.””

“What?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

That silence told me there was more.

“What did he promise her?””

Before Daniel could respond, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I stared at it.

Then answered.

“Hello?””

No one spoke.

Then a familiar voice.

My father-in-law.

Richard.

“Nathan.””

My blood turned cold.

“Richard?””

“Yes.””

His voice sounded tired.

Old.

Nothing like the confident man I remembered.

“I know you’ve been asking questions.””

I didn’t respond.

“I know you found the records.””

My grip tightened.

“How?””

A pause.

Then:

“Because I’m the one who wanted you to find them.””

I looked at Daniel.

He looked confused.

“What are you talking about?””

Richard sighed.

“Claire has gone too far.””

The words shocked me.

“You’re blaming Claire?””

“I’m telling you the truth.””

“Seven years too late.””

Silence.

Then he said:

“Nathan, Emily was trying to expose me.””

My chest tightened.

“You admit it?””

“I admit I made mistakes.””

“Mistakes?””

My voice rose.

“My wife is dead.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

I could feel anger burning through me.

“You weren’t there when I identified her body.””

Richard went silent.

Then he whispered:

“She wasn’t supposed to die.””

The sentence froze me.

“What?””

“Nathan…”

“What did you just say?””

Richard breathed heavily.

“I need you to listen carefully.””

The desperation in his voice was terrifying.

“Claire is not the person you should be afraid of.””

I looked at Daniel.

Again.

Everyone kept saying the same thing.

Everyone knew something.

Everyone had a different version of the truth.

“Then who?””

Richard didn’t answer.

Instead, he said:

“The night Emily died, she wasn’t running away from Claire.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“She was running away from someone else.””

“Who?””

A long silence.

Then Richard said:

“Someone who had access to her car.””

I stopped breathing.

The car.

The accident.

The thing everyone accepted without questioning.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying Emily’s brakes didn’t fail by accident.””

The world went silent.

Daniel looked at me.

He had heard.

And the expression on his face told me one thing.

He believed him.

“Richard…”

My voice shook.

“Who tampered with her car?””

Before he answered, another voice came through the phone.

A woman.

Claire.

I turned around.

She was standing outside my car.

I had no idea how she found us.

She looked at me through the windshield.

And she was crying.

Real tears.

“Nathan,” she whispered.

I lowered the phone.

Richard was still speaking.

But I couldn’t hear him.

Because Claire placed her hand against the window.

And mouthed four words.

“Ask Daniel about Emily.””

I looked at Daniel.

He looked away.

For the first time since I met him…

He looked guilty.

My phone slipped lower.

Richard’s voice came through again.

“Nathan, don’t trust him.””

I stared at Daniel.

The man holding the final piece of my wife’s story.

The man who claimed he was protecting me.

The man who knew Emily’s secrets.

Then Daniel finally spoke.

Quietly.

“I never told you the worst part.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“What worst part?””

He looked at me.

“Emily didn’t die immediately after the crash.””

My entire body went cold.

“What?””

Daniel swallowed.

“She was alive.””

I couldn’t move.

“She had enough time to call someone.””

My voice barely worked.

“Who did she call?””

Daniel looked at the phone in my hand.

Then at Claire standing outside.

Then back at me.

“She called you.””

I stared at him.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“That's impossible.””

Daniel’s eyes filled with regret.

“But you never answered.””

The world stopped.

Because for seven years, I believed I lost my wife in an accident.

But the truth was much worse.

She had been alive.

She had tried to reach me.

And I wasn’t there.

Daniel reached into his pocket and pulled out an old phone.

A phone I recognized instantly.

Emily’s phone.

My hands started shaking.

“Where did you get that?””

Daniel looked at me.

“From the person who found her after the crash.””

“Who?””

He slowly turned his eyes toward the woman standing outside the car.

Claire.

May you like

And then he said:

“The person who heard Emily’s last words.””
