Chapter 9: The Fifteenth of November

Daniel arrived at the hotel less than two hours after Lauren handed me the documents.

He brought another attorney, a financial investigator, and a thick folder containing the records we had collected.

Vanessa and Patricia had already left.

Lauren stayed.

She looked exhausted.

"I should have told you sooner," she said.

I sat across from her.

"Why didn't you?""

"Because I was afraid of Vanessa. She knows how to make people feel responsible for her problems.""

Daniel opened the folder.

"Lauren, we need you to explain exactly what you know. Start with the twenty-thousand-dollar payment.""

Lauren took a deep breath.

"Mom received the money from Vanessa in October. She told me it was repayment for helping with the business.""

"Did you see the transfer?""

"Yes.""

"Did she explain where the money came from?""

"No.""

The investigator wrote something down.

Daniel continued.

"Did you see the property documents?""

Lauren nodded.

"Several times. Vanessa kept them in a locked drawer at her office. Mom had a copy.""

"Did you ever see Andre sign them?""

"No.""

"Did you witness any authorization?""

"No.""

Daniel closed the folder.

"Thank you. We'll need you to preserve the original documents and provide a formal statement.""

Lauren nodded.

Then she looked at me.

"Andre, there's something I haven't told you.""

I waited.

"Vanessa asked me to contact you two weeks ago.""

"Why?""

"She wanted me to convince you to sign the property release.""

I felt my jaw tighten.

"What did she tell you?""

"She said it was a routine refinancing document. She promised me ten thousand dollars if I could get you to sign before November fifteenth.""

I stared at her.

"Ten thousand?""

She nodded.

"I refused.""

Daniel looked up.

"Do you have evidence of that offer?""

Lauren took out her phone.

"She sent me messages.""

She handed it to the investigator.

One message read:

Just get Andre to sign. He won't understand the details, and once it's completed, everyone gets what they deserve.

Another said:

Don't mention Devin's trust. He doesn't need to know until everything is finalized.

The investigator photographed the screen.

I felt sick.

My wife had tried to use her own sister to deceive me.

And she had apparently believed that I was too trusting to notice.

That evening, Daniel received another call from the financial fraud team.

They had found an additional loan application.

This one was for $62,000.

It had been submitted through a company called Reed Financial Solutions.

The applicant's personal information matched mine.

But the email address was different.

It belonged to Marcus.

Daniel looked at me.

"Andre, this is important. We need to establish whether your identity was used without authorization again.""

I stared at the paperwork.

"How much money did they take?""

"The lender hasn't released the full transaction history yet.""

"Can they take my house?""

"Not through this loan alone. But the property documents and the debt arrangements need urgent review.""

I stood and walked toward the window.

Outside, the hotel pool lights reflected against the dark water.

I thought about Maya.

About her tiny silver suitcase.

About the way she had apologized for not being invited.

My wife had spent months preparing to move our property into a trust that excluded her.

And while she did that, she had continued sitting across from Maya at the dinner table, asking about school, smiling at her, and pretending to be family.

My phone rang.

Vanessa.

I answered.

"Andre.""

"Where are you?""

"Why?""

"Because we need to finish this.""

"Daniel is handling everything.""

Her voice became sharp.

"Daniel doesn't understand our family.""

"Neither do you, apparently.""

She ignored the comment.

"I have a document that will settle everything. You sign it, the loan issue goes away, and we can start over.""

I almost laughed.

"What document?""

"A release.""

"Release of what?""

"Your claims against the business.""

I looked at Daniel.

He motioned for me to put the call on speaker.

"Why would I release claims against a business that used my identity?""

Vanessa sighed.

"Because the money was used for our family.""

"Was it?""

"Yes.""

"Did our family receive the money?""

Silence.

I continued.

"Did Maya receive any benefit?""

"Andre, don't bring her into this.""

"She's already in it. You made sure of that.""

Vanessa's voice cracked.

"You're going to ruin Devin's future.""

I looked toward the bedroom.

Devin was sitting beside Maya, helping her with a school assignment.

"Devin's future isn't the problem. Your choices are.""

She began crying.

"I never wanted things to turn out this way.""

"Then why did you do it?""

She whispered:

"Because I wanted security.""

I closed my eyes.

"You had a home. You had a husband. You had a family.""

"No, Andre. I had a man who would always put his daughter first.""

There it was.

The truth underneath everything.

She hadn't wanted a family where both children mattered.

She wanted a family where Devin was the only child who mattered.

And she believed that if she removed Maya from the equation, she could have complete control.

I ended the call.

Daniel looked at me.

"Don't agree to anything. We'll send a formal response through counsel.""

The next morning, the financial investigator received a message from the lender.

The $62,000 application had been flagged because the identity verification records did not match my established financial history.

The lender had frozen the application pending investigation.

Then came another discovery.

The account receiving the funds from the earlier $38,000 loan was linked to Marcus's company.

A portion of the money had gone toward Patricia's mortgage.

Another portion had been used to pay off an older debt connected to Vanessa's previous marriage.

I looked at Daniel.

"She used our money to pay off Ethan's old debt?""

"That's what the transaction records suggest.""

I couldn't believe it.

"Why?""

Daniel shrugged.

"We'll need to ask her.""

That afternoon, Ethan called Devin.

I gave them privacy.

When Devin returned, he looked thoughtful.

"Can I tell you something?""

"Of course.""

"Mom told Dad that the debt was his fault. But he said he never knew about the loan.""

I nodded.

"That's consistent with what we've found so far.""

Devin looked down.

"Do you think Mom ever planned to include me in all this?""

I sat beside him.

"I don't know.""

He swallowed.

"Because if she was doing all this for me, I don't want it.""

I put a hand on his shoulder.

"You are not responsible for what your mother chose to do.""

He nodded.

Then he looked at Maya.

"Can I ask you something?""

She looked up from her book.

"What?""

"If things get worse with Mom, would you still want me around?""

Maya frowned.

"Why wouldn't I?""

"Because she's your stepmother too.""

Maya closed her book.

"Devin, you didn't do this.""

He stared at her.

She continued.

"I don't blame you for being her son. I just wish she hadn't made us feel like we couldn't be brother and sister.""

Devin's eyes filled.

Then he hugged her.

I turned away for a moment.

I didn't want either child to see me crying.

On November fourteenth, Daniel received confirmation that the property transfer had been placed under formal review.

The insurance company had also suspended the disputed policy pending its investigation.

The suspected identity misuse had been reported to the appropriate authorities.

For the first time in weeks, I felt we were making progress.

But that evening, a strange package arrived at the hotel.

It was delivered by courier.

The envelope contained no return address.

Inside was a handwritten letter from Marcus.

Andre, you have been lied to. Vanessa isn't the person you think she is. But neither is Patricia. They have been working together longer than you know.

There was a second page.

It contained a list of dates.

Some matched the suspicious bank transfers.

Others matched the property paperwork.

At the bottom was a final note.

If you want to know why Vanessa needed the house transferred before November fifteenth, look at the loan Patricia took out last year.

I immediately forwarded the letter to Daniel.

He called within minutes.

"Andre, we're checking this now.""

"Do you think Marcus is trying to help us?""

"I don't know. He may be protecting himself. We need independent verification.""

An hour later, Daniel called back.

His voice was unusually serious.

"Andre, we found the loan.""

"How much?""

"One hundred and eighty thousand dollars.""

I sat down.

"Who borrowed it?""

"Patricia.""

"What was the collateral?""

"Her house.""

I closed my eyes.

"Why does that matter?""

Daniel paused.

"Because the lender has a claim against the property, and the repayment deadline is November fifteenth.""

I stared at the calendar.

Tomorrow.

"Did Vanessa guarantee the loan?""

"Her company appears in the supporting documents.""

I rubbed my forehead.

"So she was trying to transfer my house to settle Patricia's debt?""

"That's one possibility. We're still investigating the exact arrangement.""

I looked at the letter again.

Then I noticed something written in the margin.

*IF THE HOUSE TRANSFER FAILS, THE INSURANCE MONEY COVERS THE REST.*

My blood ran cold.

I called Daniel back.

He read the sentence.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then he said:

"Andre, I want you and the children somewhere secure. Don't meet Vanessa or Marcus. We're notifying the authorities about the insurance document and the potential financial threats.""

I looked toward Maya and Devin.

They were sitting together on the sofa, laughing at a ridiculous video.

I walked over and sat between them.

Maya leaned against my shoulder.

"Dad, what's happening?""

I kissed her forehead.

"We're going to be okay.""

My phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number.

It was Marcus.

You think Vanessa is the mastermind. You're wrong. Patricia planned the entire arrangement. Vanessa followed her instructions because she believed she was protecting Devin.

A second message appeared.

And tomorrow, Patricia intends to make sure the debt is settled one way or another.

I stared at the screen.

Then a third message arrived.

It contained an address.

And a final sentence:

If you want the truth, meet me at the bank tomorrow morning. Come alone.

I immediately sent the messages to Daniel.

He called back.

"Do not go alone. In fact, don't go at all until we verify the source and coordinate with the authorities.""

I agreed.

But I couldn't sleep that night.

Because November fifteenth was no longer just a deadline on a property document.

May you like

It was the day the entire secret arrangement was supposed to collapse.

And I had a terrible feeling that Patricia and Vanessa weren't going to surrender quietly.
