Chapter 6: The Man Behind the Vacation

For several seconds, I couldn't process what Devin had said.

The restaurant around us continued its normal morning routine. Plates clattered. Coffee machines hissed. Children laughed near the windows.

But at our table, everything had stopped.

"Are you sure?"" I asked.

Devin nodded.

"I heard him.""

"When?""

"About three weeks ago.""

I leaned forward.

"Tell me exactly what happened.""

Devin looked uncomfortable.

"Mom said you were working late. I came downstairs to get something to eat, and there was a man sitting in the living room.""

"Marcus?""

"I think so. Mom introduced him as a business consultant.""

"What did he say?""

Devin rubbed his forehead.

"He asked when she was going to tell you. Mom said after the vacation.""

My fingers tightened around my coffee cup.

"Tell me the rest.""

Devin glanced at Maya.

"Then he called her his wife. She laughed and told him to stop.""

Maya looked confused.

"Did he mean they were married?""

"I don't know," Devin replied.

I stared at my son.

"Did you tell Vanessa you heard them?""

"No. I didn't think it was important.""

He lowered his head.

"Sorry.""

I reached across the table.

"Don't apologize. You didn't create this situation.""

But inside, I felt something breaking.

The affair was one thing.

The financial activity was another.

Together, they suggested that Vanessa had been living an entirely different life while I continued believing we were building a future.

I called Daniel.

He answered quickly.

"Andre?""

"There's a man named Marcus involved with Vanessa's business. Possibly romantically.""

"Do you have a last name?""

"Not yet.""

"Don't confront him. Send me anything you have.""

I explained what Devin had heard.

Daniel remained quiet.

Then he said, "Andre, I want you to understand something. We need to separate the emotional issues from the financial investigation. If there was fraud, we'll pursue it through the proper channels. If there are marital assets involved, we'll document them.""

"I understand.""

"And please don't access any account that isn't yours or any device you aren't authorized to use.""

"Understood.""

After ending the call, I opened my email.

A message from Sterling Estate Services had arrived.

It contained the complete property file.

I downloaded the documents.

The first pages were ordinary legal paperwork.

Then I found an attachment titled:

*TRUST STRUCTURE — PROPOSED BENEFICIARY ARRANGEMENT.*

I opened it.

The document explained that our house would be transferred into a trust.

Vanessa would serve as trustee.

Devin would receive the property upon reaching a specified age.

But there was another section.

It described what would happen if I died before the transfer was completed.

The proposed arrangement included a life insurance policy worth $500,000.

I frowned.

I already had life insurance through my employer.

But this document referred to another policy.

One I had never purchased.

I called the insurance company listed on the paperwork.

After a lengthy verification process, the representative confirmed that a policy had indeed been opened using my personal information.

The coverage was $500,000.

The beneficiary was listed as Vanessa.

I sat completely still.

"Who authorized this policy?"" I asked.

The representative reviewed the file.

"The application was submitted electronically. We have a digital authorization attached.""

"Can you send me a copy?""

"Certainly. We'll need to open a formal review.""

I thanked her.

When I ended the call, Maya was watching me.

"Dad?""

I put the phone down.

"Yes?""

"Are you scared?""

I considered lying.

Then I remembered what she had told me on the balcony.

She didn't want me pretending everything was fine.

"Yes," I admitted.

"A little.""

She reached across the table and squeezed my hand.

"But we'll figure it out.""

I smiled faintly.

"That's what I'm counting on.""

That afternoon, Daniel arranged a video conference with a financial fraud specialist.

I showed him the suspicious loan, the trust documents, and the insurance policy.

He studied the paperwork carefully.

"These are serious allegations," he said.

"We need to preserve the original records and report the suspected identity misuse.""

"What about the policy?""

"We'll notify the insurer that you dispute the application. Don't cancel anything independently until they've reviewed it.""

"Can Vanessa access the money?""

"Not from the policy itself unless a covered claim is established. But the existence of an unauthorized policy is still important.""

I rubbed my forehead.

"Why would she do this?""

Daniel looked directly into the camera.

"That's what the investigation needs to establish. We shouldn't guess.""

After the meeting, I took the children to the beach.

I wanted them to have at least one normal afternoon.

Maya collected seashells.

Devin challenged me to a race into the water and immediately regretted it when I splashed him.

For an hour, we laughed.

Then my phone rang.

Vanessa.

I answered.

"Andre.""

Her voice was unusually calm.

"We need to talk.""

"About what?""

"About coming home.""

"I'm not coming home tomorrow.""

"Then when?""

"I haven't decided.""

She sighed.

"Listen. I've spoken to my mother. She's upset, and the children are upset. We need to stop letting emotions control everything.""

I looked toward Maya.

She was showing Devin a shell.

"Vanessa, I received the property documents.""

The silence was immediate.

"What documents?""

"The trust paperwork. The loan application. The insurance policy.""

Her voice changed.

"Who gave you those?""

"They were submitted using my information.""

"Andre, you're misunderstanding.""

"Then explain.""

She exhaled sharply.

"The trust was for estate planning. I was trying to protect the children.""

"Why wasn't Maya included?""

"Because Devin is my biological son.""

I closed my eyes.

There it was again.

That same division.

Biological child.

Stepchild.

Her son.

My daughter.

"What about the insurance policy?""

"That's standard financial planning.""

"I never authorized it.""

"Andre, you were busy. I handled the paperwork.""

"Using my signature?""

She didn't answer.

Then I asked the question I had been avoiding.

"Who is Marcus?""

For the first time, Vanessa sounded genuinely frightened.

"Why are you asking about him?""

"Because Devin says he's been coming to our house.""

"He's a business associate.""

"Then why did he call you his wife?""

A long silence followed.

Finally, Vanessa laughed nervously.

"Devin misunderstood.""

"Did he?""

"Yes.""

"Are you having an affair?""

Her voice became cold.

"This conversation is over.""

"Vanessa—"

She hung up.

I stared at the phone.

A few seconds later, a text arrived.

You need to stop listening to Devin. He's confused, and you're using him to hurt me.

Then another.

If you come back, we can fix everything. But if you keep digging, you'll destroy more than just our marriage.

I read the second message twice.

Then I took a screenshot and sent it to Daniel.

By evening, the children were back in the hotel room.

I was sitting near the balcony when Devin approached.

"Can I show you something?""

He held out his phone.

"What is it?""

"Something I found a few weeks ago.""

He opened his photo gallery.

There were several screenshots.

The first showed a message from Vanessa to Marcus.

Andre is getting suspicious. We need to finish the transfer before he notices.

The second read:

Once the house is secure, I'll tell him everything. By then, he'll have no way to stop it.

The third was from Marcus.

And what about the girl?

Vanessa had replied:

She won't be part of the picture. That's why she isn't coming.

I felt my jaw tighten.

Devin looked sick.

"I took these because something felt wrong. I didn't know what to do.""

I put a hand on his shoulder.

"You did the right thing by showing me.""

Then I noticed the date.

The messages had been sent on October 12.

That was almost three weeks before the vacation.

I read them again.

"Devin, how did you get these?""

"They appeared on the family tablet. Mom had left her messaging account open.""

"Did you save anything else?""

He hesitated.

"Yes.""

He scrolled to another screenshot.

This one contained a message from Marcus.

What happens if Andre refuses to sign?

Vanessa's response was chilling.

He won't have a choice once the paperwork is submitted.

I looked up.

"Did you ever hear them discuss hurting me?""

Devin shook his head quickly.

"No. Nothing like that.""

"Okay. I just need you to tell me exactly what you know. Don't guess.""

He nodded.

Then he showed me the final screenshot.

It was a message from Vanessa to Patricia.

The Bahamas trip is important. I need everyone to stay calm until November fifteenth. After that, everything changes.

I checked the calendar on my phone.

November fifteenth was twelve days away.

I called Daniel immediately.

He answered on the first ring.

"Andre?""

"I've got something you need to see.""

I sent him the screenshots.

A minute passed.

Then another.

Finally, Daniel called back.

"Andre, listen carefully. I'm arranging an emergency consultation with a specialist tomorrow morning. Do not return to the house alone, and do not confront Vanessa or Marcus.""

"Why?""

"Because the November fifteenth deadline may be connected to the property transaction. We need to understand exactly what she is planning.""

I looked through the balcony doors.

Maya was brushing her hair while Devin sat on the bed, watching television.

They looked like ordinary teenagers enjoying a vacation.

I wanted to keep it that way.

"Daniel, I need one more thing.""

"What?""

"Find out who Marcus really is.""

Daniel paused.

"We'll do our best.""

That night, after the children went to sleep, I received an email from an address I didn't recognize.

There was no greeting.

No explanation.

Just one attached photograph.

I opened it.

It showed Vanessa and Marcus standing outside a courthouse.

They were smiling.

Vanessa was holding a document folder.

Marcus had his arm around her waist.

But what made my blood run cold wasn't the photograph.

It was the date printed beneath it.

The picture had been taken six months earlier.

And in Vanessa's hand was a marriage certificate.

I enlarged the image.

The names were clearly visible.

*Marcus Reed and Vanessa Mitchell.*

My wife hadn't just been planning a vacation with another man.

She might have already married him.

Then another email arrived.

This one contained a single sentence.

Andre, before you accuse Vanessa of anything, you need to know what happened to her first husband.

I stared at the screen.

Because Vanessa had always told me her first marriage ended peacefully.

She had told me her former husband moved away and wanted nothing to do with Devin.

But the sender had included one final line.

May you like

Marcus isn't the first man Vanessa has tried this with.

And suddenly, I understood that the truth about my marriage might be much darker than I had imagined.
