Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Five Tickets

I sat in the gas station parking lot for nearly ten minutes, staring at the screenshot.
Maya was quietly eating a bag of crackers in the passenger seat. Devin had fallen silent in the back.
Neither of them knew what I had just discovered.
I enlarged the image.
The original hotel reservation showed six guests. Maya's name had been removed on September 8.
The note beside her name was unmistakable.
REMOVE HER. USE HER SHARE FOR THE UPGRADE.
I called Lauren.
She answered after the second ring.
"Andre?""
"Explain the screenshot.""
There was a long pause.
"Where are you?""
"On the road to the airport. Explain it.""
Lauren exhaled.
"Vanessa told us Maya had decided she didn't want to come.""
I tightened my grip on the phone.
"She told you that?""
"Yes. She said Maya wanted to spend the week with Renee because she didn't like traveling.""
I looked at my daughter.
Maya was staring out the window, watching a man fill his car with gasoline.
"Did you believe her?""
"I did at first.""
"Then why did you send me this?""
Lauren went quiet.
"Because I found the original booking documents yesterday. I was looking for the hotel confirmation, and I noticed the changes.""
"What changes?""
"Vanessa originally booked a family suite with enough space for everyone. Then she removed Maya and upgraded to a private oceanfront suite for herself and Devin.""
I closed my eyes.
"Was that why Maya was removed?""
"That's what it looks like.""
"Lauren, I need you to be honest with me. Was this really about having a peaceful vacation?""
Another silence.
Then she said something I hadn't expected.
"No.""
I waited.
"Vanessa wanted the trip to be a celebration for Devin. She told us that he had been feeling overlooked since you started spending more time with Maya.""
I frowned.
"What?""
"She said you were putting too much attention on your daughter. She wanted Devin to feel like the most important child in the family for once.""
I stared through the windshield.
For seven years, I had paid for Devin's school activities, helped him prepare for college, attended his basketball games, and treated him as my own son.
I had never considered him less important because he wasn't biologically mine.
But apparently, Vanessa believed my daughter was competing with him.
"Lauren," I said, "did Devin know about this?""
"I don't think so.""
I glanced at the rearview mirror.
Devin was listening.
His face had gone pale.
"Thank you for telling me," I said before ending the call.
I turned around.
"Devin.""
He lifted his head.
"Did your mom tell you the vacation was supposed to celebrate you?""
He looked confused.
"She said it was a family trip.""
"Did she tell you Maya was being removed because you needed to feel more important?""
His mouth opened slightly.
"No.""
I nodded slowly.
He looked down at his hands.
"I thought Maya didn't want to go.""
Maya finally turned toward him.
"I did.""
Devin swallowed.
"I know that now.""
There was a painful silence.
Then he said, "I'm sorry.""
Maya gave him a small nod.
I started the car again.
We drove to the airport.
I didn't know what kind of vacation we would have. I didn't even know whether we would find three available seats on a flight leaving that day.
But I knew I wasn't returning to the house without understanding how far Vanessa had gone.
At the airport, I booked three tickets to Florida.
It wasn't the Bahamas.
It wasn't a luxury resort.
It was a quiet coastal hotel near Clearwater Beach, with a small swimming pool and a balcony overlooking the water.
Maya looked at the confirmation screen.
"Three tickets?""
"Three.""
She glanced at Devin.
"You're coming too?""
Devin nodded.
"If that's okay with you.""
Maya looked at me.
I smiled.
"There's room for everybody who wants to be here.""
For the first time that morning, she smiled without forcing it.
While we waited at the gate, I opened our joint bank account.
I wanted to understand exactly how much Vanessa had spent.
The first charge was $4,800 for the resort.
The second was $2,100 for airfare.
Then came restaurant deposits, spa appointments, private transportation, and a shopping package.
The total was over $11,000.
I frowned.
We had agreed to spend no more than $6,000 on the vacation.
I scrolled further.
There was another transaction.
A transfer of $8,500 from our joint savings account to Vanessa's personal checking account.
The description read:
*FAMILY TRAVEL EXPENSES.*
But the date was three days before the hotel reservation.
I called our bank.
After verifying my identity, I asked the representative to explain the transfer.
She reviewed the transaction.
"Sir, this transfer was authorized through your wife's online banking profile.""
"Was it transferred to a travel company?""
"No. It went directly into an individual checking account.""
"Can you tell me the account holder?""
"I'm sorry, sir. Because of privacy restrictions, I can only confirm the destination account belongs to another authorized account holder on your joint banking profile.""
Vanessa.
I thanked the representative and ended the call.
Then I opened the banking application again.
There was something else.
A $3,200 payment to a company called Sterling Estate Services.
I had never heard of it.
I took a screenshot.
Before I could investigate further, my phone rang.
Vanessa.
I answered.
"Where are you?"" she demanded.
"At the airport.""
"You're actually leaving?""
"Yes.""
"With Devin?""
"He's made his decision.""
Her voice became sharp.
"You cannot take my son out of state without discussing it with me!""
I looked at Devin.
He shook his head, clearly uncomfortable.
"Devin is seventeen. He asked to come. I'll make sure you know where he is, and I'll discuss the arrangements with you properly.""
"You have no right!""
"Then perhaps you should have thought about that before turning our family vacation into a competition between children.""
She went silent.
Then she said, "You don't understand what I've been dealing with.""
"Then explain the $8,500 transfer.""
I heard her breathing change.
"What transfer?""
"The money you moved from our savings account.""
A pause.
"That was for the vacation.""
"Then why did you put it in your personal account?""
"Because I was managing the expenses.""
"And the $3,200 payment to Sterling Estate Services?""
Silence.
I sat up straighter.
"Vanessa?""
"That's none of your business.""
I laughed once.
"Money coming out of our joint account is absolutely my business.""
She lowered her voice.
"Andre, listen to me. We need to talk privately. There are things you don't know.""
"Then start talking.""
"Not over the phone.""
I looked at the departure board.
Our flight would begin boarding in twenty minutes.
"Send me the information.""
"I can't.""
"Why?""
She hesitated.
Then she said something that made my stomach tighten.
"Because if you find out what that money was really for, you'll understand why I had to keep Maya away from this trip.""
I stared at the phone.
"What does Maya have to do with your missing money?""
Vanessa didn't answer.
Instead, I heard another voice in the background.
Patricia.
"Tell him about the house!""
The line went quiet.
I slowly lowered my phone.
The house?
I looked at the screenshot of the mysterious $3,200 payment.
Then I opened our shared email account and searched for Sterling Estate Services.
One result appeared.
An email dated six weeks earlier.
The subject line read:
*PROPERTY OWNERSHIP TRANSFER — FINAL DOCUMENTS REQUIRED.*
I opened it.
My heart began pounding.
The email contained a scanned document with my full name, Vanessa's full name, and the address of our house.
At the bottom was a signature.
It looked like mine.
But I hadn't signed it.
I enlarged the document.
Then I noticed a second name listed under the proposed beneficiaries.
Devin Mitchell.
Not Maya.
Not my daughter.
Devin.
I read the document again, trying to understand what I was looking at.
The email explained that the property transfer would be finalized once the remaining paperwork was submitted.
There was also a note from the estate service:
Please confirm that all legal guardianship and inheritance provisions have been reviewed before execution.
My hands went cold.
I looked at Maya.
She was laughing softly at something Devin had shown her on his phone.
She had no idea that the woman who had deliberately removed her from a family vacation might also have been making decisions about the roof over her head.
I called Lauren again.
She answered immediately.
"Andre?""
"Do you know anything about Vanessa transferring our house?""
There was a sharp intake of breath.
"Oh, God.""
"What?""
"Andre, I thought you knew.""
"Knew what?""
Lauren hesitated.
Then she whispered:
"Vanessa told Mom that once the paperwork was finished, Devin would inherit the house. She said it was time to make sure her son had something secure.""
I stared at the departure gate.
"How long has she been planning this?""
"Months.""
My phone buzzed.
A new email had arrived.
It was from Sterling Estate Services.
The subject line was short.
*URGENT: SIGNATURE VERIFICATION REQUIRED.*
I opened it.
The first sentence made my blood run cold.
Mr. Mitchell, we have reason to believe that the signature submitted on your property transfer documents may not have been authorized by you.
I looked toward my children.
Then I looked back at the screen.
My wife hadn't simply excluded Maya from a vacation.
May you like
She might have been trying to remove my daughter from her future.
And suddenly, the vacation was the smallest part of what I needed to uncover.
