Chapter 7: The Secret About Her First Husband

I read the email three times before I finally called Daniel.

It was nearly midnight. Maya and Devin were asleep, and the hotel room was illuminated only by the small lamp beside my bed.

Daniel answered sounding exhausted.

"Andre, what's happened?""

"I received a photograph of Vanessa and Marcus outside a courthouse. There's a marriage certificate with both their names.""

He went quiet.

"Are you certain it's legitimate?""

"I don't know. But the sender claims Marcus isn't the first man she's done this to.""

"Forward everything to me. Don't respond to the sender.""

I sent the photograph.

A few minutes later, Daniel called back.

"I've looked at the image. We need to verify the record independently. But there's something else. I searched the business registration information you sent me.""

"What did you find?""

"Marcus Reed has been connected to two companies that were dissolved following financial disputes.""

I sat up.

"What kind of disputes?""

"Both involved allegations of unauthorized financial transactions and property transfers. I haven't confirmed the underlying facts yet, but the pattern is concerning.""

I rubbed my face.

"Why would Vanessa get involved with someone like that?""

"That's a question we need evidence to answer.""

I looked at the email again.

The sender had included a name.

Ethan Carter.

I searched my old conversations with Vanessa, but the name didn't mean anything.

Then I remembered something.

During our second year of marriage, Vanessa had told me that her first husband had moved to another state after their divorce.

His name was Ethan.

I searched for his contact information in an old email archive.

I found an address.

I stared at it for several seconds before typing.

My name is Andre Mitchell. I was married to Vanessa after your divorce. I recently received information suggesting that there may be financial matters connected to her previous marriage that I should understand. If you're willing to speak, please contact me.

I sent the message.

Then I waited.

At 12:43 a.m., a reply arrived.

I wondered when she'd do it again.

My stomach tightened.

I typed:

What exactly did she do?

His response came almost immediately.

Call me tomorrow. There are things you need to know, and I don't want to explain them through email.

The next morning, Daniel arranged a three-way call with Ethan.

Ethan sounded like a man who had spent years trying to forget something.

"Andre, I wish I could tell you this was a misunderstanding.""

"Please tell me what happened.""

He sighed.

"Vanessa and I were married for nine years. We had Devin, and for a while, things were normal. Then she started talking about creating a family trust.""

I looked at Daniel.

Ethan continued.

"She said she wanted to protect Devin's future. She asked me to sign several documents. I trusted her, so I did.""

"What happened?""

"Six months later, I discovered that my name had been used to secure a business loan. The money went into an account I didn't control.""

I felt a chill.

"How much?""

"Forty-two thousand dollars.""

Daniel interrupted.

"Was there ever a criminal investigation?""

"Yes. The lender investigated, but the matter became part of our divorce proceedings. I couldn't prove who had submitted certain electronic documents.""

"Did you lose your house?""

Ethan was quiet.

"Eventually, yes. Vanessa convinced me to transfer my interest into a trust for Devin. She said it was temporary. By the time I understood what was happening, I had already signed documents that made challenging the arrangement extremely difficult.""

I stared at my laptop.

The similarities were unmistakable.

"What happened to you after the divorce?""

"I moved away. I didn't want Devin growing up surrounded by arguments. I kept paying child support, but Vanessa gradually made communication difficult.""

I swallowed.

"She told me you abandoned him.""

Ethan let out a bitter laugh.

"Of course she did.""

Daniel asked another question.

"Do you know Marcus Reed?""

Ethan went silent.

Then he answered.

"Yes.""

My stomach tightened.

"How?""

"He was around during the final months of my marriage.""

I closed my eyes.

"Was he involved with Vanessa?""

"I suspected it. I never had proof.""

"Did he help with the trust?""

"That's what I believe. Marcus worked in financial services back then. He understood property documents better than I did.""

Daniel asked Ethan whether he still had copies of his old paperwork.

"I kept everything," Ethan replied.

"Emails, bank statements, copies of the trust agreement. I even have messages where Vanessa discussed transferring the house.""

"Can you send them?""

"Yes.""

Then Ethan said something that made me sit forward.

"Andre, there's something else. When Devin was younger, Vanessa once told me that he would eventually inherit everything. She said nobody else would have a claim.""

I glanced at Daniel.

"Nobody else?""

"She mentioned future spouses and children. I didn't understand what she meant at the time.""

I ended the call with Ethan after exchanging contact details.

For several minutes, I simply sat there.

My wife had apparently followed a pattern with her previous husband.

And now I was seeing the same structure in my own marriage.

A loan.

A trust.

A house.

A beneficiary.

And Marcus.

Daniel broke the silence.

"Andre, I'm going to recommend that we involve the appropriate authorities regarding the suspected identity fraud. We also need an independent property attorney to review the proposed transfer.""

"Do it.""

"I've already started.""

After the call, I walked into the kitchen.

Maya was sitting at the table eating cereal.

"Morning, Dad.""

"Morning, sweetheart.""

She looked at my face.

"Did you sleep?""

"Not much.""

She pushed a bowl toward me.

"I made extra.""

I sat beside her.

For a moment, I wanted to tell her everything.

But she had already carried too much.

Instead, I asked about the shells she'd collected.

She pulled a small plastic bag from her backpack and showed me the prettiest ones.

Then she asked something unexpected.

"Do you think Devin's dad would want to see him?""

I looked at her.

"Why?""

"Because Devin said he hasn't talked to him much.""

I considered the question.

"That's something Devin would need to decide.""

She nodded.

"I just think he should know his dad didn't forget him.""

I felt something catch in my throat.

That afternoon, Devin and I sat on the balcony.

I told him that I had spoken with Ethan.

He stared at the floor.

"Is he angry with me?""

"No. He wants to know you're okay.""

Devin's eyes became watery.

"Mom said he left because he didn't want to be a father.""

"I don't think that's the whole story.""

"Can I talk to him?""

"Of course.""

I helped Devin arrange a video call.

When Ethan appeared on the screen, he looked older than the photographs Devin had shown me.

For several seconds, neither father nor son spoke.

Then Ethan smiled sadly.

"Hey, buddy.""

Devin's lips trembled.

"Hi, Dad.""

Ethan covered his mouth.

"I've missed you.""

Devin began crying.

"Why didn't you call?""

"I tried, son. More times than you know.""

The conversation lasted nearly an hour.

I stayed nearby but gave them privacy.

When Devin finally returned to the balcony, his eyes were red.

He sat beside me.

"He's not the person Mom said he was.""

I put my arm around him.

"People are sometimes more complicated than the stories we hear about them.""

Devin nodded.

Then he asked:

"Do you think Mom ever really loved him?""

I didn't answer immediately.

"I don't know.""

He looked toward the ocean.

"Do you think she ever really loved you?""

That question hurt.

I looked at him.

"I believe she did at one point. But love doesn't excuse what someone chooses to do afterward.""

That evening, Daniel called.

He had received Ethan's old documents.

Among them was an email exchange from seven years earlier.

Vanessa had written to Marcus:

The first house is finished. The next one needs to be handled more carefully.

Marcus had replied:

Don't worry. We know what to do this time.

The email was dated two months before Vanessa and I met.

I read it twice.

Then I looked at the second attachment.

It was a spreadsheet containing names, property values, and dates.

One entry was marked in red.

*ANDRE MITCHELL — HOME EQUITY — REVIEW PENDING.*

My blood ran cold.

Vanessa hadn't suddenly become involved in something suspicious.

She had apparently been discussing my property before we were even married.

And there was another name at the bottom of the spreadsheet.

A name I recognized immediately.

*PATRICIA HARRIS — BENEFICIARY / FINANCIAL CONTACT.*

Her mother hadn't simply been supporting the vacation.

She might have been involved from the beginning.
