Chapter 7: The Secret Behind My Daughter’s First Breath
I sat in my car for almost an hour after leaving the café.
The document Jonathan gave me was still on the passenger seat.
I had looked at it so many times that the words were burned into my mind.
*CONFIDENTIAL ADOPTION INQUIRY.*
I kept hoping the letters would rearrange themselves.
That I had misunderstood.
That there was some simple explanation.
But every time I looked again, the same question remained.
*How did Mia come into Victoria’s life?*
And why had everyone spent eight years trying to keep me from asking?
I picked up my phone.
My first instinct was to call Victoria.
To demand answers.
To force the truth out of her.
But then I remembered Mia’s face.
The fear in her eyes.
The way she had whispered:
“Daddy, you won’t leave, right?””
I couldn’t let another adult conversation become another wound for my daughter.
So instead, I drove home.
When I entered the house, it felt different.
The same walls.
The same furniture.
The same family pictures hanging on the hallway.
But none of it felt familiar anymore.
Victoria was sitting in the living room.
She looked exhausted.
Like she knew exactly where I had been.
“You met Jonathan.””
It wasn’t a question.
I placed the folder on the table.
“Yes.””
Her face went pale.
“What did he tell you?””
I stared at her.
“Why don’t you tell me?””
She looked away.
“I can’t.””
Those three words made something inside me snap.
“You can’t?””
My voice became louder.
“You lied about my daughter.””
“I was scared.””
“You manipulated her.””
“I know.””
“You tried to hide my own child from me.””
“I know!””
Her sudden shout filled the room.
Then silence followed.
Victoria covered her face.
For a moment, she looked less like the person who betrayed me.
She looked like someone drowning.
But I had learned something.
People can look broken and still break others.
“What happened the night Mia was born?””
Victoria lowered her hands.
“I didn’t give birth to her.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
I stood completely still.
“What?””
She started crying.
“I knew this day would come.””
“Victoria.””
My voice was barely a whisper.
“Explain.””
She took a deep breath.
“Mia’s biological mother was someone else.””
The room spun.
“Who?””
Victoria looked at the floor.
“Her name was Elena.””
The name meant nothing to me.
But the way Victoria said it told me everything.
“She was my friend.””
I stared at her.
“You had a friend who gave birth to my daughter?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“That’s not how it happened.””
“Then how?””
Victoria looked toward the hallway.
Toward the stairs.
Toward where Mia’s room was.
“She was sick.””
I frowned.
“Elena?””
Victoria nodded.
“She knew she couldn’t raise Mia.””
“And you?””
“I wanted a child.””
The words sounded rehearsed.
Like something she had repeated to herself for years.
“She asked me to help.””
I looked at the folder.
“An adoption?””
Victoria hesitated.
“Yes.””
“Then why hide it?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because when you met Mia…”
She stopped.
I waited.
“When you held her, you loved her immediately.””
I remembered that day.
The tiny baby in my arms.
The first time she wrapped her fingers around mine.
The first time I felt like I had a purpose.
Victoria continued.
“You said she was your daughter.””
“And she is.””
“Yes.””
She nodded.
“But I was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
“That one day someone would tell you the truth.””
I stared at her.
“The truth that she wasn’t biologically mine?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
She looked directly at me.
“The truth that she wasn’t biologically yours either.””
The sentence confused me.
“What are you talking about?””
Victoria stood.
“You need to understand something.””
She walked to a cabinet.
Pulled out an old box.
Then placed it on the table.
“I never wanted you to know because I thought you would see her differently.””
I opened the box.
Inside were old photographs.
Hospital bracelets.
Letters.
And one photograph that stopped me.
A young woman holding a newborn baby.
Elena.
And beside her…
A man.
I recognized him instantly.
Michael Cross.
Daniel’s older brother.
My hands went cold.
“No.””
Victoria closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
I looked at the photograph.
“What does he have to do with Mia?””
Victoria whispered:
“He was her biological father.””
The room went silent.
I felt like the floor disappeared beneath me.
“Mia’s father?””
“Yes.””
I looked at her.
“Then why did Jonathan say he found proof she was my daughter?””
“Because legally, you became her father.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
Victoria looked down.
“The hospital records were changed because Michael refused to take responsibility.””
My jaw tightened.
“Why?””
“Because he was already married.””
I stared at the photograph.
Michael Cross.
The man connected to Daniel.
The man who had somehow been part of my daughter’s life before I even knew she existed.
“What happened to Elena?””
Victoria’s expression changed.
“She died.””
The room became quiet.
“When?””
“Two months after Mia was born.””
I looked at the old photographs.
A mother who never got to watch her daughter grow up.
A father who disappeared.
A child who had no idea where she came from.
And me.
The man who walked into the middle of it all.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Victoria’s voice cracked.
“Because you were the only father Mia knew.””
I looked at her.
“That doesn’t justify lying.””
“I know.””
“Nothing justifies what you did.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
For once, she didn’t defend herself.
She didn’t blame anyone else.
She just sat there.
Broken.
But then I noticed something.
One photograph was missing from the box.
A space where something had been removed.
“What’s this?””
Victoria looked.
Her expression changed.
“I…”
“What was here?””
She didn’t answer.
I picked up the box.
“Victoria.””
Finally, she whispered:
“The original adoption agreement.””
“Where is it?””
She looked away.
“I don’t know.””
That was a lie.
I knew it immediately.
Because fear crossed her face.
Not confusion.
Fear.
“Who has it?””
She remained silent.
I stood.
“Who has it?””
Her voice was almost impossible to hear.
“Michael.””
My heart stopped.
“Michael Cross is alive?””
Victoria nodded.
“He came back.””
“When?””
“Recently.””
“Why?””
She looked terrified.
“Because he wants Mia.””
The room went cold.
“What do you mean?””
“He found out about the adoption.””
I stared at her.
“He wants custody?””
“Yes.””
The anger that rose inside me was different from before.
Victoria had hurt my daughter.
But now someone else was threatening the life we had built.
Someone who had been absent for eight years.
Someone who suddenly wanted to claim a child he never raised.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Victoria cried.
“Because I thought I could handle it.””
I shook my head.
“You keep saying that.””
She looked at me.
“What?””
“That you were protecting something.””
I pointed toward the stairs.
“But you were never protecting Mia.””
Her face fell.
“You were protecting yourself.””
She didn’t argue.
Because she knew.
A small sound came from the hallway.
We both turned.
Mia was standing there.
She had heard everything.
My heart sank.
“Mia…”
She looked at me.
Then at Victoria.
Then asked the question that broke me.
“Daddy…”
Her voice trembled.
“Am I still your daughter?””
I crossed the room immediately.
I knelt beside her.
“Mia, listen to me.””
Tears filled her eyes.
“But I’m not really yours.””
I held her hands.
“Look at me.””
She did.
“You are my daughter because I chose you every single day.””
“But…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“Blood doesn’t make a family.””
I pulled her into my arms.
“Love does.””
She cried against my shoulder.
And for the first time in days, she held onto me without fear.
But then my phone vibrated.
A message.
From an unknown number.
I opened it.
One sentence appeared.
*Arthur, if you want to keep Mia, you need to know what Victoria never told you about Elena’s death.*
I stared at the message.
Then another one appeared.
A photograph.
A recent photograph.
Michael Cross standing outside my house.
Watching.
My blood ran cold.
May you like
Because the secret about Mia’s birth wasn’t buried in the past.
It was standing right outside my door.
