Chapter 5: The Truth Hidden in My Daughter’s Blood
Victoria ran.
Not toward the front door.
Not toward safety.
Toward the security monitor.
For a moment, I didn’t understand what she was doing.
Then I saw her hand reach for the power button.
“Stop her.””
My voice cut through the hallway.
Daniel moved first.
He grabbed her arm before she could touch the screen.
Victoria screamed.
“Let go of me!””
The calm woman I had known for six years was gone.
The perfect wife.
The careful stepmother.
The person who always knew what to say.
All that remained was panic.
“Arthur, you don’t understand!””
I stared at her.
“Then explain.””
She looked at the monitor.
Then at Mia.
Then back at me.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Please.””
That one word used to work on me.
It used to make me lower my guard.
Not anymore.
“Open the file.””
Victoria shook her head.
“No.””
“Why?””
She couldn’t answer.
Because everyone already knew.
The truth was waiting on the screen.
The security employee looked at me.
“Sir?””
I nodded.
“Open it.””
The file loaded.
The room became silent.
A DNA report appeared.
The title was simple.
*PATERNITY TEST RESULTS.*
My heart pounded.
I looked at Mia.
She was watching me.
Waiting.
Like she had been waiting for years.
I clicked the first page.
The names appeared.
*Arthur Hayes.*
*Mia Hayes.*
Then the result.
I stopped reading.
Because my eyes saw the words.
But my brain refused to accept them.
*Probability of biological relationship: 99.99%.*
I looked again.
Once.
Twice.
Then I let out a breath I didn’t know I was holding.
Mia was my daughter.
My little girl.
My blood.
My heart.
Victoria collapsed into the nearest chair.
Daniel looked away.
I turned toward Mia.
She looked confused.
“Daddy?””
I walked toward her.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Like I was approaching something fragile.
I knelt down.
“You are my daughter.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I know.””
The answer surprised me.
“You know?””
She nodded.
“Victoria said the test was fake.””
My chest tightened.
“She said that?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
Mia looked down.
“After I found the papers.””
I looked at Victoria.
“You told my daughter I wasn’t her father?””
Victoria wiped her face.
“I was angry.””
“Angry?””
My voice rose.
“You used the one thing a child should never have to question.””
She stood suddenly.
“I was scared!””
Everyone froze.
There it was.
The first honest emotion she had shown all night.
Fear.
“I was scared you would leave me.””
I stared at her.
“So you tried to destroy my relationship with my daughter?””
“No.””
“You told her I wasn’t her father.””
“I never meant for her to hear.””
“But she did.””
Victoria covered her face.
“I made mistakes.””
Again.
That word.
I was starting to hate it.
Because mistakes were dropping a glass.
Mistakes were forgetting an appointment.
This was a choice.
A thousand choices.
Every day.
Every lie.
Every time Mia cried alone.
I stood.
“Where did you get this test?””
Victoria looked away.
I knew the answer before she spoke.
“Daniel.””
Everyone turned toward him.
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“I didn’t give it to her.””
Victoria immediately pointed at him.
“You helped create this mess!””
Daniel shook his head.
“I helped because you lied to me too.””
I looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
He sighed.
“I thought Mia was your stepdaughter.””
The words made me pause.
“What?””
Daniel looked at Victoria.
“She told me Mia wasn’t yours.””
My jaw tightened.
“She told you that?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Before I knew the truth.””
I looked at Victoria.
“You told him my daughter wasn’t mine?””
She didn’t respond.
Daniel continued.
“She said you only stayed because you felt responsible.””
Mia looked hurt.
I immediately turned toward her.
“Don’t listen to that.””
She nodded.
But I could tell the words had stayed with her.
Children don’t forget the things adults say when they are scared.
Especially when those adults are supposed to protect them.
I looked back at Daniel.
“How did you find out?””
He reached into his pocket.
“I found the original documents.””
He handed me a folder.
Inside were medical records.
Birth records.
Everything.
The truth.
Victoria had altered one document.
Not enough to change Mia’s identity.
Just enough to create doubt.
Enough to make people question.
Enough to control the story.
“She changed the hospital information,” Daniel said quietly.
I looked at Victoria.
“Why?””
She didn’t answer.
“Why would you do that?””
Her face crumpled.
“Because I knew you would choose her.””
The words stunned me.
“You knew?””
She nodded.
“You always chose Mia.””
I stared at her.
“She’s my daughter.””
“I know!””
Her voice cracked.
“And I hated that I could never compete with that.””
The confession hung in the air.
Nobody moved.
Not even Victoria.
Like she couldn’t believe she had finally said it.
“You were jealous of my child.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
I stepped closer.
“You weren’t trying to build a family.””
Victoria cried.
“I wanted us to be enough.””
“We were.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice became quieter.
“We weren’t.””
I looked at her.
And for the first time, I saw something clearly.
Victoria didn’t hate Mia because Mia did something wrong.
She hated Mia because Mia represented a love Victoria could never control.
The kind of love a parent has for a child.
The kind that doesn’t disappear when someone lies.
I looked at Mia.
She was watching everything.
I hated that she had to.
I hated that my daughter was standing in the middle of adult problems she never created.
I walked over and covered her ears gently.
“Enough.””
Victoria looked at me.
“Arthur…”
“No more explanations tonight.””
“But you need to understand.””
“I understand enough.””
Her tears fell.
“You’re leaving me.””
I looked at the woman I once promised forever.
“I don’t know what happens next.””
She looked surprised.
“But I know one thing.””
I glanced at Mia.
“My daughter will never be afraid to tell me the truth again.””
Victoria closed her eyes.
The security employee quietly stepped away.
Daniel looked toward the door.
“I should go.””
I stopped him.
“No.””
He turned.
“You were part of this.””
His face fell.
“But you also helped expose it.””
He nodded.
“I’m sorry.””
I believed he meant it.
But sorry didn’t erase what happened.
Not anymore.
After everyone left the hallway, only three people remained.
Me.
Mia.
Victoria.
The house that once felt warm suddenly felt unfamiliar.
Victoria walked toward the stairs.
Then stopped.
“Arthur.””
I didn’t look at her.
“There’s something you don’t know.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What now?””
She looked at Mia.
Then at me.
“The DNA test wasn’t the only thing I hid.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What else?””
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
“The day Mia was born…”
She looked down.
“I wasn’t alone.””
I felt my heartbeat slow.
Because I knew that tone.
It wasn’t a confession.
It was a warning.
“What are you saying?””
Victoria’s face turned pale.
“Someone else knows the truth.””
“Who?””
She looked toward the front door.
And before she could answer, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A man’s voice came through.
“Arthur Hayes?””
“Yes.””
“You finally found out about Mia.””
My grip tightened.
“Who is this?””
The man paused.
Then said:
“My name is Jonathan Reed.””
I frowned.
“I don’t know you.””
A quiet laugh came through the phone.
“You should.””
The line went silent for a moment.
Then he said the words that made my entire body freeze.
“Because I was there the night your daughter was born.””
I looked at Victoria.
She was crying.
And for the first time…
May you like
I realized the biggest secret in my family’s story might not be what Victoria did.
It might be what she was trying to protect me from.
