Chapter 9: The Promise I Made Before I Became Her Father
For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.
Victoria’s words repeated in my head.
*“You were the person Elena chose to protect her daughter.””*
It didn’t make sense.
I had spent the last few days discovering secrets I never knew existed.
Victoria’s lies.
Daniel’s betrayal.
Michael’s return.
Elena’s name.
But this was different.
This wasn’t just another hidden piece of the past.
This was a piece of my own life.
A chapter I didn’t remember.
“When did I meet Elena?””
Victoria looked down.
“Before I met you.””
I stared at her.
“That’s impossible.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“It happened before we became friends.””
I pulled out a chair and sat across from her.
“Start from the beginning.””
Victoria took a deep breath.
“I met Elena when she was pregnant.””
I waited.
“She was scared.””
“Why?””
“Because Michael disappeared.””
I frowned.
“But you said he didn’t know.””
“He didn’t know the whole truth.””
Victoria looked at her hands.
“Michael’s family was powerful. They controlled everything around them. Elena knew that if they found out about the baby, they would take control of her life.””
I listened carefully.
“And where do I fit into this?””
Victoria swallowed.
“Elena met you by accident.””
“Where?””
“At the hospital.””
I froze.
“The night Mia was born?””
She nodded.
I stared at her.
I remembered that night.
The waiting room.
The nervous families.
The strangers sitting beside me.
But I didn’t remember Elena.
“You’re saying I met her?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.
“She was in the hallway.””
The memory came slowly.
A woman crying.
A conversation.
A promise.
But it was blurry.
Like a dream I had forgotten.
“I don’t remember.””
“You wouldn’t.””
“Why?””
“Because you didn’t know how important it was.””
I stood.
“Tell me.””
Victoria looked at me.
“Elena saw you holding Mia.””
My heart tightened.
“She saw me?””
“Yes.””
“She didn’t even know me.””
“She knew enough.””
Victoria’s voice became quieter.
“She saw how you looked at that baby.””
I looked toward the stairs.
Toward Mia’s room.
“You mean after she was born?””
Victoria nodded.
“You were sitting outside the nursery.””
The memory returned.
The glass window.
The tiny babies sleeping.
The feeling that my entire life had changed.
“I remember.””
Victoria continued.
“Elena sat beside you.””
I closed my eyes.
A woman sitting next to me.
A quiet voice.
A conversation I had completely forgotten.
“What did she say?””
Victoria looked at me.
“She asked you a question.””
“What question?””
She whispered:
“She asked if you believed a child could belong to someone who didn’t share their blood.””
My breath stopped.
Because now I remembered.
The woman beside me.
Her tired eyes.
The sadness in her voice.
I remembered answering.
I had said:
“A child belongs to the person who shows up.””
My eyes opened.
I looked at Victoria.
“That was Elena?””
“Yes.””
I sat down slowly.
“She told me she hoped someone would love her daughter like that.””
Victoria nodded.
“She wanted to know if someone could love a child without needing a biological connection.””
I looked at my hands.
The same hands that had held Mia for the first time.
“She knew.””
“Yes.””
“She knew I would love her?””
“No.””
Victoria shook her head.
“She hoped.””
The word stayed with me.
Hope.
That was what Elena had carried.
Not certainty.
Not guarantees.
Just hope.
“What happened after that?””
Victoria looked away.
“Elena made arrangements.””
“For adoption?””
“Yes.””
“And she chose you?””
She nodded.
“She trusted me.””
My expression hardened.
“She shouldn’t have.””
Victoria accepted the anger.
“I know.””
“You failed her.””
“I know.””
“You failed Mia.””
“I know.””
For once, there was no excuse.
No defense.
Only regret.
I looked at the papers again.
“Why did Elena choose you instead of someone else?””
Victoria’s face changed.
Because the answer mattered.
“She thought I would give Mia a stable life.””
A bitter laugh escaped me.
“And you almost destroyed it.””
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt more than another lie.
Before I could respond, my phone rang.
Michael.
I answered.
“Hello.””
“Arthur.””
His voice sounded serious.
“I need to meet with you.””
“Why?””
“Because I found something.””
I looked at Victoria.
“About Elena?””
“Yes.””
“What?””
A pause.
Then:
“Proof that she never wanted Mia hidden from you.””
My grip tightened.
“Where are you?””
He gave me an address.
“I’ll be there.””
When I arrived, Michael was waiting outside an old office building.
He looked different than he had before.
Less like a threat.
More like someone carrying regret.
“I didn’t know whether you would come.””
“I need answers.””
He nodded.
“I understand.””
We went inside.
The office was small.
Dust covered the shelves.
Michael opened a drawer.
Inside was a box.
He placed it on the table.
“This belonged to Elena.””
I looked at it.
“Why do you have it?””
“Because after she died, I found it among her belongings.””
He opened the box.
Inside were letters.
Photos.
And a small notebook.
“She wrote everything down.””
I picked it up.
“Why give this to me?””
“Because she wrote about you.””
I opened the notebook.
The handwriting was delicate.
The first page had a date.
The night Mia was born.
I read.
*I met someone tonight. His name is Arthur.*
My heart stopped.
The next line:
*He doesn’t know it yet, but he may become the person my daughter needs.*
I looked up.
Michael watched me.
“She believed you were different.””
I continued reading.
*He told me blood isn’t what makes someone a parent. Love is.*
My vision blurred.
Because those were my words.
Words I had forgotten.
Words Elena remembered.
I turned the page.
Then stopped.
A new entry.
Years later.
After Mia’s adoption.
*Victoria promised me she would tell Arthur the truth when the time was right.*
My heart sank.
Another page.
*But I’m afraid she won’t.*
I looked at Michael.
“What happened?””
He looked away.
“Elena became suspicious.””
“Of Victoria?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Michael hesitated.
“Because Victoria started changing.””
The next pages explained everything.
Elena had discovered Victoria wasn’t protecting Mia.
She was protecting herself.
She had hidden the adoption details.
She had manipulated the records.
She had convinced herself that controlling the truth was the same as protecting the family.
But Elena saw through it.
And she wrote one final note.
The last page.
The handwriting was shakier.
*If Arthur ever learns the truth, please tell him this: Mia was never a secret because she was unwanted. She was a secret because too many adults were afraid of losing her.*
I couldn’t read anymore.
I closed the notebook.
Michael looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
I nodded.
Then asked:
“What happened to Elena?””
His expression changed.
“The official story says she died from complications.””
“And the truth?””
He was silent.
“Michael.””
He looked at me.
“The truth is that Elena was planning to expose Victoria.””
My stomach tightened.
“And?””
“And the night before she was supposed to meet you…”
He stopped.
“Someone stopped her.””
The room went cold.
“Who?””
Michael looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
“But you suspect someone.””
He didn’t answer.
He didn’t have to.
A message appeared on my phone.
From an unknown number.
One sentence.
*Stop digging into the past, or Mia will lose the only father she has ever known.*
I showed Michael.
His face changed.
Because he recognized the number.
“Who is it?””
He looked at me.
“Arthur…”
“Who?””
He whispered:
“Daniel.””
I stared at the screen.
Daniel.
The man who helped reveal Victoria’s lies.
The man who claimed he wanted the truth.
The man who had suddenly become afraid.
My phone buzzed again.
Another message.
This time with an attachment.
A photograph.
Daniel standing beside someone.
Someone I recognized.
Someone I thought was gone.
Elena.
Alive.
My hands went numb.
Because the past wasn’t just hidden.
It had been waiting.
May you like
And the woman everyone said was gone…
Had been alive all this time.
