Chapter 1: The Dress on the Floor

“Daddy, please help me!””

The scream echoed through the marble hallway of my house, louder than the thunder shaking the windows outside.

I froze halfway up the stairs.

For a second, I thought I had heard wrong.

Then I heard my daughter cry again.

“Daddy! Please!””

My hand tightened around the wooden railing as I rushed toward the sound.

It was the kind of scream no parent could ignore.

When I turned the corner, I saw my eight-year-old daughter Mia sitting on the floor beside the staircase, her white birthday dress torn and covered with purple stains. Her small shoulders shook as tears streamed down her face.

Standing over her was my wife, Victoria.

Calm.

Perfectly dressed.

Not a single strand of her hair out of place.

And that was the first thing that felt wrong.

“Mia?”” I dropped to my knees beside my daughter.

“What happened?””

She grabbed my arm so tightly her fingers trembled.

“Daddy, she ruined my dress on purpose.””

My eyes moved from Mia to Victoria.

Victoria crossed her arms and sighed.

“Arthur, don’t start.””

I stared at her.

“Don’t start what?””

“She’s throwing another tantrum,” Victoria said, rolling her eyes.

“She wanted attention because everyone was preparing for the charity dinner.””

Mia shook her head quickly.

“No, Daddy. That’s not true.””

Victoria let out a small laugh.

“See? This is exactly what I mean. She creates stories whenever she doesn’t get her way.””

I looked back at my daughter.

Her cheeks were wet with tears.

Her favorite dress, the one she had begged me to buy for weeks, was ruined.

“Mia,” I said softly, “tell me exactly what happened.””

She looked at Victoria, then lowered her voice.

“She told me I wasn’t allowed to wear this dress because guests would think I was trying to be the princess of the house.””

My stomach tightened.

Victoria immediately stepped forward.

“Arthur, seriously? Are you going to believe an eight-year-old over your wife?””

I stood slowly.

“I’m asking what happened.””

Victoria shook her head.

“I was just trying to discipline her.””

“Discipline her?”” I repeated.

“Yes.””

Her voice became sharper.

“She was being disrespectful. She refused to change clothes, so I took the dress away from her.””

Mia wiped her face.

“You pulled it from me.””

Victoria looked offended.

“That is not what happened.””

“It is!”” Mia shouted.

“You grabbed it and ripped it!””

The hallway went silent.

Even the sound of rain outside seemed to disappear.

Victoria looked at me.

“Arthur, don’t listen to her silly stories.””

Something inside me shifted.

Because I had known Victoria for six years.

I had defended her.

Trusted her.

Believed she loved Mia as much as I did.

But standing there, watching my little girl cry on the floor, I saw a side of my wife I had never wanted to see.

I looked around the hallway.

Then I noticed the small black camera mounted near the ceiling.

The security camera.

Victoria followed my eyes.

And for the first time, her confident expression disappeared.

“Arthur…”

I pointed at the camera.

“Play the security footage right now.””

Her face changed instantly.

“No.””

I turned toward the security monitor near the office.

“Why not?””

“Because this is ridiculous.””

“Mia says you hurt her.””

“I didn’t hurt her!””

“Then prove it.””

Victoria stepped closer.

“Arthur, please don’t do this.””

But I was already walking toward the monitor.

The house staff slowly gathered in the hallway, confused by the shouting.

The security system loaded.

The footage from twenty minutes earlier appeared on the screen.

Victoria went pale.

“Arthur, listen to me.””

I pressed play.

Everyone watched.

The video showed Mia walking down the hallway in her new dress, smiling while holding a small box of decorations.

Then Victoria appeared.

The room became completely silent.

Mia grabbed my hand.

“Daddy…”

I squeezed her fingers.

“Watch the screen, everyone.””

Victoria took one step back.

“Stop.””

Nobody moved.

The footage continued.

And within seconds, everyone saw exactly what happened.

They saw Victoria grab the dress.

They saw Mia trying to pull away.

They saw the moment the fabric tore.

A gasp came from behind me.

The housekeeper covered her mouth.

Victoria’s voice became desperate.

“No, stop the video!””

I stared at the screen.

The woman I married was watching her own lie collapse in front of everyone.

“Arthur, please,” she whispered.

I turned toward her slowly.

The anger I felt wasn’t loud.

It was worse.

It was cold.

“You lied to me.””

Victoria shook her head.

“I can explain.””

“You blamed my daughter.””

“I was frustrated.””

“You made her cry.””

“I didn’t mean—”

“You made everyone think she was the problem.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Arthur, please forgive me.””

I looked at Mia.

She was still holding my hand.

Still afraid.

That was the moment I realized something.

A child can forget a broken toy.

A child can forget a ruined dress.

But a child never forgets the moment they begged for help and wondered if their own parent would believe them.

I looked back at Victoria.

“Get out of my home right now.””

The hallway froze.

Victoria stared at me like she couldn’t understand the words.

“Arthur…”

“We are finished.””

Her lips parted.

“Forever?””

I didn’t answer.

Because suddenly, I wasn’t just thinking about what happened today.

I was thinking about every time Mia had gone quiet when Victoria entered the room.

Every time she stopped asking her stepmother for help.

Every time she said, “It’s okay, Daddy,” when I knew it wasn’t.

Victoria wiped her tears.

“You’re destroying our family over one mistake.””

I looked at her.

“No.””

I glanced at my daughter.

“You destroyed it when you thought she wouldn’t be believed.””

Victoria opened her mouth to respond.

But before she could say anything, the security monitor made a strange sound.

A notification appeared.

*NEW VIDEO FILE DETECTED.*

Everyone turned.

I frowned.

The footage wasn’t from today.

It was from three months earlier.

And the file name made my blood run cold.

Because it wasn’t labeled with the hallway camera.

It was labeled:

*MIA’S ROOM — PRIVATE RECORDING.*

I looked at Victoria.

Her face turned completely white.

And I realized the dress was only the beginning.
