Chapter 8: The Lie Behind The Crime

The words from Daniel’s voice stayed in my mind.

*A crime your father committed.*

I looked at Michael.

My father.

The man who had spent the last few minutes telling me he had been searching for us.

The man who brought letters he never got to send.

The man who looked at Sarah like he carried decades of regret.

And now someone was saying he had done something terrible.

Nobody spoke.

Even my mother looked shocked.

Not relieved.

Not victorious.

Shocked.

“Daniel is lying,” Michael said immediately.

But his voice was different.

Not confident.

Not angry.

Afraid.

I noticed.

And that scared me.

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“Daniel, what crime?””

There was silence on the other end.

Then he answered:

“The kind that destroys families.””

My father stepped toward me.

“Jake, don’t listen to him.””

I looked at Michael.

“Then tell me.””

His face changed.

“Tell you what?””

“The truth.””

He looked away.

That was enough.

My chest tightened.

“Dad.””

The word felt strange leaving my mouth.

But I said it.

“Did you do something?””

Michael closed his eyes.

And for a moment, he looked like a man who had been carrying a secret for too long.

“I made mistakes.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“Mistakes?””

Daniel’s voice came through the phone.

“He doesn’t want you to know.””

I looked at the screen.

“Where are you?””

“Not important.””

“Then stop hiding and explain.””

A pause.

Then Daniel said:

“Ask him about the night he disappeared.””

I looked at Michael.

“The night you disappeared?””

He didn’t answer.

My mother suddenly spoke.

“Jake, this is exactly what I was trying to protect you from.””

I turned toward her.

“You knew?””

Linda’s face changed.

“I knew there were things he did.””

My anger returned.

“You knew and still hid everything?””

“I was trying to protect you from both of them.””

“Both?””

I looked between my mother and father.

“What are you talking about?””

Nobody answered.

Sarah moved closer to me.

“Jake.””

I looked at her.

Her eyes were filled with fear.

Not because of the mystery.

Because she could see me breaking.

The one thing I had wanted my entire life was the truth.

Now I had too much of it.

I turned back to Michael.

“Start talking.””

He looked at Linda.

Then at me.

“Your mother is right about one thing.””

My jaw tightened.

“I never told you everything.””

Sarah whispered:

“Why?””

Michael looked down.

“Because I was ashamed.””

The room became silent.

“Of what?””

He took a slow breath.

“Of the night Daniel is talking about.””

I waited.

“I found out Linda had been hiding my messages.””

My mother looked away.

“I found out she had lied to Sarah’s mother.””

Sarah’s face tightened.

“And?””

Michael looked at me.

“I confronted Daniel.””

“Why Daniel?””

“Because he helped Linda.””

I nodded.

“The video.””

“Yes.””

Michael’s voice became quieter.

“Daniel was involved in everything.””

I looked at the phone.

“You said my father committed a crime.””

Michael nodded slowly.

“I did.””

Everyone froze.

Even my mother looked surprised.

I felt the air leave my lungs.

“What?””

Michael looked at me.

“I committed a crime.””

Sarah grabbed my arm.

“Jake…”

I couldn’t look away.

“What did you do?””

Michael swallowed.

“I broke into Daniel’s office.””

My confusion grew.

“That’s it?””

“No.””

He looked down.

“I stole documents.””

My mother whispered:

“Michael…”

He ignored her.

“Documents that proved Daniel had been hiding money.””

I remembered the files.

The loans.

The company records.

“You were trying to expose him?””

“Yes.””

“Then why call it a crime?””

“Because I didn’t just take the documents.””

He paused.

“I destroyed property.””

I stared.

“How bad?””

“Bad enough that Daniel reported me.””

I shook my head.

“And you disappeared?””

Michael looked at Linda.

“I was forced to.””

My mother’s expression changed.

“Don’t.””

Michael looked at her.

“You know it’s true.””

I looked between them.

“Explain.””

Michael took a breath.

“Daniel had connections.””

I frowned.

“What kind?””

“The kind that made people disappear from records.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“My father…”

“I was afraid.””

Michael looked at Sarah.

“I was afraid if I fought back, they would hurt my children.””

Sarah looked away.

My father continued.

“So I left temporarily.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Temporarily?””

“Yes.””

“How long?””

“Two weeks.””

I stared.

“But you never came back.””

His face collapsed.

“Because when I tried…”

He stopped.

“What?””

Michael looked at Linda.

“She told me you were gone.””

My mother closed her eyes.

“She told me you and Jake moved away.””

I felt sick.

“She lied.””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you find us?””

Michael’s eyes filled.

“I tried.””

His voice broke.

“Every year.””

I looked at the letters.

The unopened letters.

“She blocked you.””

“Yes.””

My mother whispered:

“I was scared.””

I turned.

“Scared enough to erase my father?””

She cried quietly.

“I thought if he came back, I would lose you.””

I shook my head.

“You already lost me.””

The words hurt her.

But they were true.

Then Daniel’s voice interrupted.

“Jake.””

I looked at the phone.

“He’s telling you half the story.””

Michael’s expression hardened.

“Daniel.””

“Ask him what happened after the office.””

I frowned.

“What happened?””

No one answered.

My father looked at the floor.

That was the moment I knew there was another secret.

“Dad.””

He finally spoke.

“Someone got hurt.””

Sarah went still.

“Who?””

Michael’s face became pale.

“Daniel’s brother.””

The room froze.

I stared.

“What?””

“He came to the office that night.””

Michael’s voice shook.

“I didn’t know he would be there.””

“What happened?””

“He attacked me.””

My father swallowed.

“I pushed him away.””

“And?””

Michael looked at me.

“He fell.””

Silence.

The kind of silence that makes your ears ring.

“Is he dead?””

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

“But he was seriously injured.””

I looked at Daniel’s name on the phone.

“So Daniel blamed you.””

“Yes.””

My mother whispered:

“And he used it against him.””

I turned.

“What do you mean?””

Linda looked broken.

“Daniel threatened Michael.””

“With what?””

“With prison.””

I looked at Michael.

“And you ran?””

He nodded.

“I thought if I disappeared, my children would be safe.””

I closed my eyes.

The story was becoming clearer.

Not simple.

Not clean.

But clearer.

Then Daniel spoke again.

“Interesting version.””

Everyone looked at the phone.

Daniel continued.

“Michael forgot one detail.””

Michael’s face changed.

“What?””

Daniel laughed quietly.

“The security footage.””

My stomach tightened.

“What footage?””

“The footage from the office.””

Michael went silent.

Daniel continued:

“Jake, your father wants you to believe he was protecting everyone.””

A pause.

“But the video shows what really happened.””

I looked at Michael.

“Is there a video?””

He didn’t answer.

That was my answer.

My mother suddenly stepped forward.

“Daniel, stop.””

Daniel laughed.

“Now you care?””

Linda’s face went pale.

“Don’t send it.””

I froze.

“Send what?””

Nobody answered.

Then my phone buzzed.

A new message.

A video file.

My hands felt cold.

I looked at Sarah.

She shook her head.

“Jake…”

I pressed play.

The screen showed a dark office.

A younger Michael.

A younger Daniel.

Two men arguing.

Then a third person entered.

I leaned closer.

Because I recognized him.

Even though I had never met him.

Daniel’s brother.

The argument became louder.

Then the man moved toward Michael.

A struggle began.

And then I saw it.

The moment everyone had been hiding.

The moment that changed everything.

Michael pushed him.

The man fell.

But before he hit the ground…

Someone else entered the room.

Someone standing in the doorway.

Someone I recognized immediately.

My mother.

And she wasn’t shocked.

She wasn’t scared.

She was holding something.

A document folder.

I stopped breathing.

Because the video didn’t end with Michael running.

It ended with Linda walking toward the injured man.

And saying:

“Don’t worry.””

A pause.

Then my mother’s younger voice whispered:

“I know exactly how to use this.””
