Chapter 6: The Man My Mother Erased
The words stayed in the air long after Emily stopped speaking.
*Your father didn’t leave us.*
Nobody moved.
Not me.
Not Sarah.
Not Linda.
It felt like the entire world had stopped inside that bedroom.
I stared at my mother.
Waiting.
Waiting for her to laugh.
Waiting for her to deny it.
Waiting for her to say Emily was lying.
But she didn’t.
And that silence was louder than any confession.
“Mom.””
My voice sounded unfamiliar.
“Tell me she’s lying.””
Linda looked at me.
Her eyes were wet.
“Jake…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“Don’t say my name like that.””
I stepped back.
“Just answer.””
Sarah stood beside me, holding her phone.
Emily was still on the line.
“Jake,” Emily said softly, “I know this is a lot.””
I ignored her for a moment.
My eyes stayed on Linda.
“Did you take my father away?””
My mother looked down.
And that was the moment something inside me broke.
Because my whole life, I had believed my father abandoned us.
I had grown up with that story.
The story of the man who left.
The story my mother repeated every time I asked.
“He wasn’t ready to be a father.””
“He chose himself.””
“He didn’t care enough to stay.””
I was eight years old when I stopped asking questions.
Because every answer hurt.
But now I wondered if those answers had ever been real.
“Why?””
The question came out quietly.
Linda wiped her face.
“Because I was scared.””
I stared at her.
“Scared of what?””
She looked at Sarah.
Then at the floor.
“Losing everything.””
Sarah let out a painful laugh.
“Everything?””
Her voice shook.
“You mean your reputation?””
Linda looked at her.
“You don’t know what happened.””
“No,” Sarah replied.
“I know exactly what happened.””
She stepped forward.
“My father disappeared.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“My mother spent years wondering if he was dead.””
She pointed toward Linda.
“And you knew.””
My mother looked away.
Sarah’s voice became stronger.
“You knew someone was waiting for him.””
Linda froze.
I looked between them.
“What does that mean?””
Sarah turned to me.
“My father told me something in his messages.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He said he wasn’t allowed to contact us.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Why?””
She looked at Linda.
“Because someone threatened him.””
My mother closed her eyes.
I felt my anger rising.
“Mom.””
She didn’t answer.
“Who threatened him?””
Linda finally whispered:
“Daniel.””
The name landed like a stone.
Her business partner.
The man in the video.
The man connected to all of this.
I looked at the laptop again.
The old recording.
The documents.
The lies.
“How?””
My mother sat down.
“Your father discovered financial problems.””
I frowned.
“What financial problems?””
She didn’t answer.
I already knew.
The loans.
The hidden debts.
The documents.
“He found out about your company.””
Linda nodded.
“At the time, I was trying to save everything.””
“So you lied?””
“Yes.””
“You destroyed a family?””
Her eyes filled.
“I thought I was protecting you.””
I clenched my jaw.
“You keep saying that.””
“Because I believed it.””
“No.””
I pointed at the phone.
“Emily believed you abandoned her.””
I pointed toward Sarah.
“Sarah believed her father didn’t love her.””
Then I pointed at myself.
“And I spent my entire life believing my father didn’t want me.””
My voice cracked.
“You didn’t protect us.””
Linda looked at me.
“You’re right.””
The admission surprised me.
She looked older suddenly.
Much older.
“I made a terrible choice.””
Sarah shook her head.
“One choice?””
Linda looked at her.
Sarah’s eyes were filled with years of pain.
“You stole my father.””
My mother had no answer.
The phone remained silent.
Then Emily spoke.
“Jake?””
I picked up.
“Yes.””
My voice was rough.
“Are you really my sister?””
A pause.
Then:
“Yes.””
I closed my eyes.
The strangest part was that I believed her.
Not because of the documents.
Not because of the video.
Because of the feeling.
Somewhere inside me, hearing her voice felt strangely familiar.
Like hearing a song I didn’t know I remembered.
“I don’t understand.””
Emily sighed.
“I know.””
“Why didn’t you contact me before?””
“I tried.””
My eyes opened.
“What?””
“I tried finding you.””
She paused.
“But your mother made it impossible.””
I looked at Linda.
“She changed your last name?””
“No.””
Emily’s voice became quiet.
“She changed mine.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“She made sure nobody could connect me to your father.””
Sarah looked confused.
“How?””
Emily answered:
“She told everyone my father abandoned me.””
My stomach tightened.
The same story.
Different child.
Different life.
Same lie.
“She told people I was unstable,” Emily continued.
“She told my mother I was better off without him.””
I looked at Linda.
“You destroyed people because you were afraid.””
My mother didn’t defend herself.
For once.
She simply sat there.
Broken.
Then Emily said:
“Jake, there’s something else.””
I looked at the phone.
“What?””
A pause.
“The person who sent you that video.””
My eyes moved to Linda.
“Who was it?””
Emily took a breath.
“Your father.””
The room froze.
Sarah gasped.
My mother looked up instantly.
“No.””
It was the first time she sounded truly afraid.
“Impossible.””
Emily heard her.
“He’s alive.””
My heart stopped.
The words didn’t make sense.
My father.
Alive.
The man I had spent decades believing was gone.
Alive.
“Where is he?””
Emily was quiet.
“I don’t know.””
“Then how do you know?””
“Because he found me.””
“When?””
“Six months ago.””
I stared at the floor.
Six months.
My father had been alive for six months.
And I knew nothing.
“What did he say?””
Emily’s voice became emotional.
“He said he spent years trying to find us.””
I looked at Linda.
“He said your mother took away his chance to be our father.””
My mother stood suddenly.
“Enough.””
Everyone looked at her.
She shook her head.
“You can’t believe him.””
I stared at her.
“Why?””
“Because he’s lying.””
“Then prove it.””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
I stepped closer.
“Prove it, Mom.””
Silence.
“Tell me where he is.””
Her eyes filled.
“I don’t know.””
That answer shocked me.
Not because I believed her.
Because I didn’t.
My mother always knew everything.
She always had an explanation.
A plan.
A reason.
But now she looked trapped.
Then there was a knock at the front door.
Everyone froze.
A knock.
At three-thirty in the afternoon.
Sarah grabbed my arm.
“Jake.””
I moved toward the hallway.
My instincts were screaming.
I reached the front door.
I looked through the glass.
And my heart stopped.
An older man stood outside.
Gray hair.
Tired eyes.
A face I had only seen in old photographs.
A face that looked strangely familiar.
My hand froze on the doorknob.
Behind me, Linda whispered:
“No…”
I turned.
She was staring at the door.
Her entire body was shaking.
“Mom?””
She whispered the words like a nightmare.
“He found us.””
The man outside lifted his hand.
And knocked again.
Then he said through the door:
“Jake?””
My heart pounded.
“I know you don’t remember me.””
A pause.
“But I’ve been waiting thirty-two years to say this.””
I opened the door slowly.
The man looked at me.
May you like
And whispered:
“I’m your father.””
