Chapter 4: The Woman Watching From Outside
The photo on my phone made my blood run cold.
It wasn’t blurry.
It wasn’t taken from far away.
It was close.
Too close.
Sarah was standing beside the nursery window, one hand resting on her pregnant stomach, staring down at the backyard.
She looked peaceful.
Unaware.
Vulnerable.
Someone had been standing outside our home watching her.
Watching my wife.
Watching my unborn daughter.
I felt every muscle in my body tighten.
“Jake?””
Sarah’s voice pulled me back.
I looked at her.
She immediately knew something was wrong.
“What happened?””
I locked my phone screen.
“Who took this?””
Nobody answered.
That silence was enough.
I looked at my mother.
“Mom.””
Linda looked away.
My anger came back instantly.
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You don’t get to do that.””
She looked at me.
“Do what?””
“Stand there and act like you don’t know.””
Her expression hardened.
“I don’t.””
“Then why did you react like you did?””
Linda’s jaw tightened.
Because she knew.
She knew exactly who had sent the message.
Sarah walked closer to me.
“Jake, show me.””
I hesitated.
I didn’t want to hurt her more.
But hiding things was how we got here.
I turned the phone around.
The second she saw the photo, her face changed.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
Fear.
“Sarah?””
She stared at the screen.
Her lips parted.
“No.””
My stomach dropped.
“You know this person?””
She shook her head quickly.
“No.””
But her voice was not convincing.
I lowered the phone.
“Sarah.””
She looked at me.
“I don’t know who took the picture.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I know the place.””
I frowned.
“What?””
She pointed at the photo.
“The angle.””
I looked closer.
The picture was taken through the nursery window.
From the backyard.
Near the old oak tree.
Sarah whispered:
“Someone stood there before.””
My entire body went still.
“When?””
She looked down.
“Last week.””
I stared at her.
“Last week?””
She nodded slowly.
“I didn’t tell you.””
I felt hurt.
Not angry.
Hurt.
“Why?””
“Because I wasn’t sure.””
She rubbed her stomach.
“And I didn’t want you to worry.””
I closed my eyes.
Sarah was always trying to protect me.
But she didn’t understand.
Keeping me away from the truth didn’t protect me.
It left me blind.
“What happened?””
She sat on the edge of the bed.
“Three days ago, I heard something outside at night.””
I listened carefully.
“I thought it was an animal.””
She looked at the window.
“But then I saw a shadow.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Did you see the person?””
“No.””
“Did they come inside?””
“No.””
“Did you call anyone?””
She shook her head.
“I thought I was imagining it.””
I looked at my mother.
“And you knew?””
Linda remained silent.
That was answer enough.
My voice became low.
“How long?””
She looked at me.
“How long what?””
“How long have you known someone was watching my wife?””
Linda’s face changed.
“I didn’t know they were watching her.””
“Then what did you know?””
She looked away.
I stepped closer.
“Mom.””
For the first time, she looked tired.
Not angry.
Not powerful.
Just tired.
“I knew someone was looking for Sarah.””
“Who?””
She didn’t answer.
“Who?””
Linda finally whispered:
“Her father.””
Sarah froze.
“My father?””
My mother nodded.
“He came to town.””
The room went silent.
Sarah stared at her.
“When?””
Linda looked at the floor.
“Two weeks ago.””
Sarah’s voice shook.
“You knew my father was here?””
“Yes.””
“And you didn’t tell me?””
My mother looked at her.
“You don’t understand.””
Sarah laughed quietly.
A broken laugh.
“You keep saying that.””
Linda ignored her.
“Your father is dangerous.””
I immediately focused on that word.
“Dangerous how?””
My mother hesitated.
And that hesitation told me there was more.
“What did he do?””
Linda crossed her arms.
“He abandoned Sarah.””
“That doesn’t make someone dangerous.””
“You don’t know him.””
Sarah stood up.
“Neither do you.””
My mother looked at her.
“I know enough.””
“No,” Sarah said.
Her voice surprised me.
It was stronger than before.
“You know what he did twenty-nine years ago.””
Linda went quiet.
“But you don’t know why.””
I looked between them.
“What does that mean?””
Sarah took a shaky breath.
“My father didn’t just leave.””
She looked at me.
“He was forced away.””
The room became still.
I stared at her.
“By who?””
Sarah looked at Linda.
And I already knew the answer before she spoke.
“Your mother.””
My heart stopped.
I looked at Linda.
She didn’t deny it.
That scared me more than anything.
“Mom?””
Linda shook her head.
“You don’t know the whole story.””
“Then tell me.””
She looked at Sarah.
“I was trying to protect you.””
Sarah’s eyes filled with disbelief.
“Protect me?””
“Yes.””
“You destroyed my family.””
Linda’s face tightened.
“Your father was not the person you think he was.””
Sarah stepped closer.
“And you were?””
Nobody spoke.
The tension felt like it could break the walls.
Then my phone buzzed again.
Another message.
Same unknown number.
I opened it.
This time there was no photo.
Just a video.
I pressed play.
The screen showed my mother.
Not today.
Not in our house.
A recording from years ago.
My mother was younger.
Standing in an office.
And she was talking to a man whose face I couldn’t see.
But I recognized his voice.
Daniel.
My mother’s business partner.
The audio was quiet.
But clear enough.
Linda’s voice came through.
“You need to make him disappear.””
Daniel answered.
“What about the child?””
My entire body froze.
My mother replied:
“The child will never know the truth.””
The video ended.
I couldn’t move.
Sarah covered her mouth.
My mother looked at the phone.
And for the first time, she looked afraid.
“Jake…”
I looked at her.
“What child?””
She said nothing.
“What child were you talking about?””
Her eyes moved to Sarah.
Then to me.
Then down to the floor.
And suddenly, the woman who had spent months attacking my wife looked like someone who had just realized the past had finally caught up with her.
“Mom.””
My voice shook.
“What did you do?””
Linda whispered:
“I was trying to stop him from taking you away.””
I stared at her.
“Taking me away?””
She looked at Sarah.
“No.””
Then she looked at me.
“Taking your father away from me.””
The words made no sense.
My father?
The man I had been told died when I was young?
The man my mother always said left us?
I felt the room spinning.
“Wait.””
I looked at Linda.
“My father?””
She didn’t answer.
“Are you saying Daniel was talking about my father?””
Linda closed her eyes.
And that was when I knew.
My entire life had been built on a lie.
Then Sarah picked up the phone.
Her hands were shaking.
“Jake…”
I looked at her.
She was staring at the video details.
At the date.
Her face turned pale.
“What?””
She looked at me.
“This video was recorded twenty-nine years ago.””
I nodded slowly.
“Okay.””
She swallowed.
“Jake…”
Her voice became a whisper.
“The child they were talking about…”
She looked at my mother.
Then back at me.
“It wasn’t me.””
My heart stopped.
“Then who was it?””
Sarah turned the phone toward me.
The final message underneath the video appeared.
May you like
A single sentence.
*Jake, ask your mother why she never told you that you had a sister.*
