Chapter 5: The Sister I Never Knew Existed
I read the message three times.
Then a fourth.
My brain refused to accept the words.
*Ask your mother why she never told you that you had a sister.*
A sister.
The word felt impossible.
I looked at Linda.
My mother.
The woman who had raised me.
The woman who had told me every story about my childhood.
The woman who had always said our family was built on honesty.
But now she was standing in my bedroom, surrounded by evidence that my entire life might have been carefully edited.
“Is this true?””
My voice came out quieter than I expected.
Linda didn’t answer.
“Mom.””
Her eyes moved toward me.
And I saw something I had never seen before.
Fear.
Not anger.
Not confidence.
Fear.
“Jake…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I need you to answer one question.””
I held up the phone.
“Do I have a sister?””
The silence was unbearable.
Sarah stood beside me, one hand covering her mouth.
She looked as shocked as I felt.
Linda finally whispered:
“Yes.””
The word destroyed something inside me.
I stared at her.
“Yes?””
My mother closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
I laughed softly.
Not because it was funny.
Because I didn’t know what else to do.
“My whole life…”
I looked around the room.
“My whole life, you knew?””
Linda looked down.
“Yes.””
I felt anger rising.
A different kind of anger.
Not the explosive anger from the nursery.
Something deeper.
Something colder.
“Who is she?””
Linda didn’t answer.
“Who is my sister?””
“She’s…”
My mother stopped.
I stepped forward.
“Say her name.””
Her lips trembled.
“Emily.””
The name hung in the air.
Emily.
A person.
A human being.
Someone who existed while I was growing up.
Someone who shared my blood.
Someone I never knew.
“How old is she?””
Linda looked at me.
“Thirty-four.””
I froze.
Thirty-four.
Only two years older than me.
My entire life, there had been someone out there who was my family.
And I had never known.
“Why?””
That was the only word I could say.
Why.
Why would a mother hide a child from her own son?
Why would she erase a person?
Linda sat down slowly on the edge of the chair.
“I thought I was protecting you.””
I stared at her.
“Stop saying that.””
She looked up.
“But it’s true.””
“No.””
My voice hardened.
“You keep using that word like it makes everything okay.””
I pointed toward the nursery.
“You said you were protecting me when you attacked Sarah.””
Linda flinched.
“You said you were protecting me when you destroyed her relationship with her father.””
I took another breath.
“And now you’re saying you protected me by hiding my own sister?””
My mother looked away.
“You don’t understand what happened.””
“Then explain.””
She was quiet.
Finally, she said:
“Your father had another family before us.””
I frowned.
“My father?””
Linda nodded.
“Before he met me, he was with Sarah’s mother.””
The room went silent.
I looked at Sarah.
She looked just as confused.
“What?””
Linda continued.
“Your father and Sarah’s mother had a daughter.””
I felt like the floor disappeared.
Emily.
Sarah’s half-sister.
My half-sister.
A connection nobody knew existed.
“My father…”
I struggled to understand.
“Was Sarah’s father?””
Linda nodded.
“Yes.””
Sarah stepped back.
“No.””
Her voice was barely a whisper.
“My father?””
Linda looked at her.
“Yes.””
The realization hit both of us at the same time.
Sarah’s biological father wasn’t just some stranger from her past.
He was connected to me.
To my family.
To my mother.
I looked at Sarah.
“You knew?””
She immediately shook her head.
“No.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I swear, Jake, I didn’t know.””
I believed her.
Because Sarah looked terrified.
Not guilty.
Terrified.
My mother noticed.
“You see?””
Linda pointed at Sarah.
“This is exactly why I tried to keep everyone away from each other.””
I turned sharply.
“Everyone?””
She looked at me.
“Your father.””
I narrowed my eyes.
“What happened to him?””
Linda hesitated.
Then Sarah spoke.
“He disappeared.””
My mother looked at her.
Sarah’s voice shook.
“My whole life, I was told my father left because he didn’t want me.””
She wiped her tears.
“But what if that wasn’t true?””
Nobody answered.
Because we all knew.
It wasn’t.
My mother had been hiding something.
I walked back to the laptop.
The documents.
The video.
The messages.
Everything suddenly connected.
“Daniel knew.””
Linda said nothing.
“Daniel knew about Emily.””
Silence.
“Daniel knew about my father.””
More silence.
I turned around.
“And you both hid this?””
My mother’s face tightened.
“Daniel helped me.””
The honesty shocked me.
“You’re admitting it?””
She looked exhausted.
“I’m tired of carrying it.””
Sarah stared at her.
“Carrying what?””
Linda looked at the nursery.
At the crib.
At the room where everything had started.
Then she said:
“The truth.””
I waited.
“My husband didn’t abandon his family.””
Her voice became quieter.
“He found out about something I did.””
My stomach tightened.
“What did you do?””
Linda looked at me.
And for a moment, she looked like my mother again.
The person who had held my hand as a child.
The person who had packed my lunches.
The person who sang to me when I couldn’t sleep.
Then that image disappeared.
“I made sure he couldn’t come back.””
Sarah gasped.
I felt sick.
“What does that mean?””
Linda looked down.
“I told him lies.””
“What lies?””
“That Sarah’s mother wanted nothing to do with him.””
Sarah’s face went pale.
“And?””
“And I told him you and I had moved away.””
My heart stopped.
“You lied to him about me?””
Linda nodded.
“I thought if he left, everything would stay under control.””
I stared at her.
“You destroyed three lives.””
She whispered:
“I know.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You destroyed more than that.””
I looked toward the nursery.
“You almost destroyed my family too.””
Linda looked at Sarah.
“I never wanted to hurt the baby.””
My anger returned.
“But you did.””
The room became silent.
Then Sarah’s phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
Her expression changed instantly.
“Who is it?””
She didn’t answer.
She just showed me.
The name on the screen made my heart stop.
*Emily.*
My sister.
The person I never knew existed.
The person my mother had hidden from me.
Sarah answered.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice came through the speaker.
Even without knowing her, I could hear the pain.
“Sarah?””
Sarah looked at me.
“Yes?””
The woman took a shaky breath.
“I’m sorry.””
Sarah frowned.
“For what?””
The voice cracked.
“For not telling you sooner.””
My mother stood up.
“Hang up.””
Everyone froze.
Because Linda wasn’t angry.
She was terrified.
The woman on the phone continued:
“Jake is there, isn’t he?””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“How do you know my name?””
A long pause.
Then Emily answered:
“Because I’ve been trying to find you for twenty-nine years.””
My breath caught.
Then she said something that made my mother go completely pale.
“Jake, your mother didn’t just hide me from you.””
A pause.
“She hid the reason your father disappeared.””
I looked at Linda.
And for the first time, my mother looked like she had no way to escape.
Emily’s final words came through the phone:
May you like
“Your father didn’t leave us.””
“He was taken.””
