Chapter 8: The Name Hidden From Everyone

For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.

The storage unit felt like it had stopped existing.

The boxes.

The papers.

The evidence of years of secrets.

None of it mattered anymore.

Because one sentence had changed everything.

*I’m not Ivy’s biological father either.*

I looked at Claire.

She looked like she had just been exposed to a truth she had spent years trying to bury.

“Claire.””

She didn’t answer.

“Look at me.””

Slowly, she did.

“Did you know?””

Her lips parted.

“I…”

That was enough.

I didn’t need the rest.

“You knew.””

Tears filled her eyes.

“I knew there were questions.””

“Questions?””

My voice rose.

“Claire, we just found out my brother isn’t Ivy’s father, and you’re calling them questions?””

She flinched.

“I didn’t know the full truth.””

“Then tell me what you knew.””

She looked at the floor.

“Ethan…”

“Tell me.””

A long silence passed.

Then she whispered:

“Ivy’s biological father died.””

The words hit me unexpectedly.

“Died?””

She nodded.

“When?””

“Before I met you.””

I stared at her.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I shook my head.

“Everyone is afraid. Everyone has reasons. But somehow, I’m always the last person to know.””

Claire wiped her tears.

“He wasn’t supposed to be part of our lives.””

“Who was he?””

She looked at the phone.

At Ryan’s name still on the screen.

Then back at me.

“His name was Daniel.””

The name meant nothing.

And somehow, that made it worse.

“Who was Daniel?””

Claire took a breath.

“He was someone I knew before Ryan.””

I frowned.

“Before Ryan?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did Ryan think Ivy was his?””

“Because…”

She stopped.

And I knew.

There was something she was still holding back.

“Because what?””

She closed her eyes.

“Because Ryan thought she was.””

The words sat between us.

I tried to understand.

“So Ryan spent eight years believing he was her father?””

“Yes.””

“And you let him?””

“I didn’t know what else to do.””

I stepped back.

“What do you mean?””

Claire’s voice shook.

“When Ivy was born, Daniel was already gone.””

“What happened to him?””

“He died in an accident.””

I waited.

“Then Ryan found out I was pregnant.””

“And?””

“He believed the baby was his.””

I stared at her.

“And you never corrected him?””

She looked ashamed.

“I was alone.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“It’s not.””

Her voice cracked.

“But I was nineteen. I had a newborn baby. I had no money.

No family nearby. Ryan was the only person willing to help.””

I looked away.

Because I understood something I hated admitting.

Claire had been young.

Scared.

Alone.

But understanding didn’t erase what came after.

Eight years of lies.

Eight years of letting me believe something different.

Eight years of letting Ivy believe I was her father without knowing the full story.

“Why me?””

She looked confused.

“What?””

“Why did you marry me?””

Her eyes filled.

“Because I loved you.””

I laughed softly.

“Did you?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you trust me with the truth?””

She had no answer.

The phone was still connected.

Ryan finally spoke.

“Because I was afraid too.””

I looked at the screen.

“You don’t get to join this conversation like you’re the victim.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice hardened.

“You watched my family fall apart.””

“I was trying to stop it.””

“You created it.””

Silence.

Then Ryan said:

“You’re right.””

That surprised me.

No excuse.

No defense.

Just acceptance.

“I made mistakes.””

“You made a lot more than mistakes.””

“Yes.””

His voice became quieter.

“But Ethan, there’s something you need to know.””

I looked at Claire.

“What?””

“The reason I started looking into you wasn’t because I wanted Ivy.””

“Then why?””

“Because someone else was asking questions.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Who?””

Ryan hesitated.

“Daniel’s family.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“They found out about Ivy.””

The room went silent.

Claire’s face changed.

“What are you talking about?””

Ryan continued.

“Daniel’s parents didn’t know he had a child.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“And now they do?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“I don’t know.””

“But you were investigating me?””

“I was investigating everyone.””

I shook my head.

“That doesn’t explain the fake documents.””

“No.””

“Or the suitcase.””

“No.””

“Or trying to send Ivy away.””

Ryan went quiet.

Then:

“That wasn’t my idea.””

I looked at Claire.

She looked away.

“Whose idea was it?””

No answer.

“Ryan.””

Finally:

“Claire.””

The silence afterward was unbearable.

I turned toward my wife.

She was crying.

“I thought I was protecting her.””

“From who?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know anymore.””

That answer frightened me.

Because Claire wasn’t acting like someone hiding a plan.

She was acting like someone who had lost control of one.

My phone buzzed.

A new message.

Unknown number again.

This time:

*Stop asking Ryan for answers. He is the reason you don’t know the truth.*

Then another message appeared.

*Check the blue box in the storage unit.*

I looked around.

Blue box.

There were dozens of boxes.

Then I saw it.

Near the back.

A small blue plastic container.

I walked toward it.

Claire watched me.

“What is that?””

“I don’t know.””

I opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Old ones.

A hospital bracelet.

A newspaper clipping.

And a letter.

The envelope was yellow with age.

On the front was a name.

Not mine.

Not Claire’s.

Not Ryan’s.

*Daniel.*

I unfolded it carefully.

The letter was handwritten.

The first line made my blood run cold.

*If you are reading this, then Claire finally decided to tell the truth.*

I looked at her.

She covered her mouth.

“What?””

I kept reading.

*My name is Daniel Reeves. I know I may never meet my daughter, but I need someone to know what happened.*

My hands started shaking.

I continued.

*Claire, if something happens to me, please don’t let them take her.*

Them.

The word stood out.

I read faster.

*They already tried once. They told me my daughter was a mistake. They told me nobody would believe me.*

I looked at Claire.

“Who is ‘they’?””

She was crying silently.

“I don’t know.””

The letter continued.

*I know Ryan thinks he is helping, but he doesn’t know the whole story.*

My heart stopped.

Ryan.

The letter was talking about Ryan.

*The truth is, Ivy was never supposed to be hidden because of her father. She was hidden because of her mother’s family.*

I froze.

Claire’s family.

The family she never talked about.

The family she said she left behind.

The letter continued.

*If anything happens, tell my daughter that her father loved her. Tell her I tried.*

The final sentence was written darker, as if the writer pressed the pen harder.

*And tell Ethan Carter that he saved her before he ever knew she needed saving.*

I stopped.

I read it again.

My name.

My name was in Daniel’s letter.

Written before Daniel died.

Before I even met Claire.

“How did he know me?””

Nobody answered.

I turned the page over.

There was one final piece of paper.

A photograph.

A photograph of a hospital room.

A newborn baby.

Claire.

Daniel.

And another person standing beside them.

A person I recognized immediately.

My father.

My dead father.

I dropped the photo.

“No.””

Claire looked at it.

Then at me.

“Ethan?””

I couldn’t breathe.

Because the impossible had just become real.

My father wasn’t just connected to my past.

He was connected to Ivy’s.

And if Daniel’s letter was true…

May you like

Then the secret everyone had been protecting wasn’t about who Ivy’s father was.

It was about why my own family had been involved from the beginning.
