Chapter 4: The Signature That Wasn’t Mine
I stared at the photo on my phone until the words blurred.
*Temporary guardianship transfer approved.*
Those five words felt impossible.
Like someone had written them in another language.
Because there was no world where I would ever sign away control of my daughter’s life without knowing.
No world.
I zoomed in on the document.
The page was slightly tilted, like Ryan had taken the photo quickly.
At the top was my full name.
At the bottom was a signature.
My signature.
Or a very convincing copy.
My stomach twisted.
“Ethan?””
Claire’s voice sounded far away.
I didn’t look at her.
I couldn’t.
Because suddenly, every strange moment from the last six months started replaying in my mind.
The conversations that ended too quickly when I walked into the room.
The way Ryan stopped asking about Ivy.
The way Claire became distant.
The way my daughter started apologizing for things that weren’t her fault.
I looked at my wife.
“Did you know about this?””
Claire’s face went pale.
“About what?””
“Don’t.””
My voice was quiet.
But she heard the warning.
“Don’t stand there and pretend you don’t know what this is.””
She looked at my phone.
Then looked away.
That was all the answer I needed.
“You knew.””
“Ethan, listen to me.””
“You knew someone filed paperwork using my name.””
“It wasn’t like that.””
I laughed.
A bitter, empty sound.
“Then tell me what it was like.””
Claire opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
I walked downstairs, trying to keep my breathing steady.
I needed space.
I needed air.
But every room in the house felt like it was closing in.
This was the same kitchen where we celebrated Ivy’s birthdays.
The same hallway where I taught her how to ride a bike by running behind her.
The same living room where Claire and I sat after bringing our daughter home from the hospital, terrified because we had no idea what we were doing.
And now I was standing there wondering if my own wife had been planning to send our child away.
“I need you to tell me everything,” I said.
Claire followed slowly.
“I was trying to protect her.””
I turned around.
“From what?””
She looked at me.
“From you.””
The words were quiet.
But they cut deeper than yelling would have.
I stared at her.
“Explain.””
Claire hugged herself.
“Six months ago, you started changing.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“You were angry all the time.””
“I was working.””
“You were exhausted.””
“Yes.””
“You were distant.””
“I was tired.””
“No, Ethan.””
Her voice cracked.
“You weren’t just tired.””
I looked away.
Because part of me knew there was truth in that.
The last year had been brutal.
More emergency calls.
More injuries.
More nights waking up from dreams where I was back inside burning buildings.
I hadn’t told Claire everything.
I didn’t tell her about the firefighter I couldn’t save.
I didn’t tell her about the child’s toy I found in the ashes after a house fire.
I didn’t tell her because I thought protecting my family meant keeping the worst parts of my job away from them.
Maybe I had been wrong.
But that didn’t explain this.
“You thought I was dangerous?””
Claire hesitated.
“No.””
“Then what?””
She sat down.
“I thought you were becoming someone you didn’t want to be.””
I looked at her.
“What does that even mean?””
She wiped her eyes.
“Ryan said you were losing control.””
My jaw tightened.
“Ryan said that?””
“Yes.””
“About me?””
She nodded.
I walked toward the window.
Outside, the yard was dark.
The same yard where Ivy had been sitting alone earlier.
My daughter.
Crying.
Waiting for someone to save her.
And I had been two minutes too late.
“What exactly did Ryan tell you?””
Claire looked nervous.
“He said he saw things.””
“What things?””
“He said you scared him.””
I turned around.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
I almost couldn’t process it.
My brother.
The person who knew everything about my life.
The person who had been there when I became a firefighter.
The person who held Ivy when she was born.
He told my wife I was dangerous?
“Claire, did you believe him?””
She looked down.
“I didn’t know what to believe.””
“That’s not an answer.””
She was silent.
Then:
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt more than a lie.
I nodded slowly.
“So you believed my brother over me.””
“No.””
“You did.””
“I was scared.””
“Of me?””
“No.””
She looked toward the stairs.
“Of what might happen to Ivy.””
I wanted to be angry.
I was angry.
But underneath it was something worse.
Pain.
Because the woman I loved had looked at me and decided I was a threat.
And instead of asking me for help…
She went behind my back.
“You should have talked to me.””
“I tried.””
“When?””
“After your last breakdown.””
I froze.
“My what?””
Claire looked uncomfortable.
“You don’t remember?””
I didn’t answer.
Because suddenly, I wasn’t sure.
She continued quietly.
“After the warehouse fire.””
The warehouse fire.
Six months earlier.
The one where three firefighters were injured.
The one where I almost didn’t make it out.
“You came home and punched the wall.””
I looked at my hand.
I remembered the cracked drywall.
I remembered Claire crying.
But I remembered something else too.
I remembered apologizing.
I remembered promising it wouldn’t happen again.
“You thought I was going to hurt Ivy?””
“No.””
“Then why?””
“Because Ryan said—”
“Stop.””
My voice cut through the room.
“Stop saying Ryan’s name like he’s the only person in this house who has answers.””
Claire looked down.
I took my phone out again.
The document was still open.
“Where did he get this?””
She didn’t respond.
“Claire.””
“I don’t know.””
“Then call him.””
Her eyes widened.
“What?””
“Call Ryan.””
“No.””
“Why?””
“He won’t answer.””
“Try.””
She shook her head.
“Ethan…”
“Try.””
After a long moment, she pulled out her phone.
Her hands shook as she dialed.
The call rang.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then:
“Hey, Claire.””
My blood ran cold.
He answered immediately.
Claire looked at me.
She hadn’t expected that.
“Ryan,” she said quietly.
“What happened?””
I stepped closer.
“Put him on speaker.””
Claire hesitated.
Then pressed the button.
“Ryan.””
My brother went silent.
The moment he realized I was there.
“Ethan.””
His voice changed.
Not surprised.
Prepared.
That scared me.
“You want to explain something?”” I asked.
A pause.
“What are you talking about?””
“The guardianship document.””
Silence.
Then Ryan sighed.
“I was hoping she’d tell you.””
My heart sank.
“You knew.””
“Yes.””
“How long?””
“Six months.””
I closed my eyes.
Six months.
My wife.
My brother.
Six months of secrets.
“Why?””
Ryan didn’t answer.
“Why did you help my wife file paperwork about my daughter?””
“It wasn’t about taking Ivy away.””
“Then what was it?””
“It was about making sure she had options.””
I laughed.
“Options?””
“Yes.””
“Ryan, she’s eight.””
“I know.””
“Then why did you help create a plan to send her four hundred miles away?””
Another pause.
Then he said:
“Because I saw what happened that night.””
I frowned.
“What night?””
Ryan’s voice became quieter.
“The night you don’t remember.””
The room went still.
Claire looked at me.
“What is he talking about?””
I stared at the phone.
“What night?””
Ryan took a breath.
“The night after the warehouse fire.””
My skin went cold.
“I remember that night.””
“No, Ethan.””
His voice lowered.
“You remember pieces.””
I didn’t speak.
“Because you weren’t yourself.””
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“Ryan.””
“I was there.””
The words hung in the air.
“You were there?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Silence.
Then:
“Because Claire called me.””
I looked at my wife.
Her face collapsed.
And that was when I realized there was an entire part of my life from six months ago that everyone knew about except me.
A part of my own story that had been hidden from me.
“Ryan,” I said slowly.
“What happened that night?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
When he finally spoke, his voice was barely above a whisper.
“Ethan…”
“You need to hear this from someone who was there.””
I felt my heartbeat pounding.
“What did I do?””
The line went silent.
Then Ryan said:
“You didn’t hurt anyone.””
I exhaled slightly.
But then he continued.
“You scared Ivy.””
My entire body froze.
I looked toward the stairs.
Toward my daughter’s room.
And for the first time that night, I wondered if maybe I had been searching for the wrong villain.
May you like
Because what if the person I was trying to protect Ivy from…
Was me?
