Chapter 7: The Truth About Ivy’s Birth
The world didn’t collapse all at once.
That would have been easier.
It would have been a single moment.
A loud crash.
A clear ending.
Instead, everything around me remained exactly the same.
The storage unit lights still buzzed above my head.
The metal door was still half-open.
Cars still passed somewhere outside.
People were still living normal lives.
But my entire reality had changed.
I looked at the document in my hand.
The hospital birth certificate.
The name under *Father* wasn’t mine.
It belonged to someone else.
Someone I trusted.
Someone who had been standing in my house.
Someone who had been helping my wife make decisions about my daughter.
Ryan.
My brother.
My best friend.
My family.
I looked at Claire.
She couldn’t meet my eyes.
That hurt more than the document.
“Eight years.””
My voice sounded unfamiliar.
Claire wiped her face.
“Ethan…”
“Eight years.””
“I was going to tell you.””
I laughed quietly.
It wasn’t anger.
It was disbelief.
“When?””
She didn’t answer.
“After she left for boarding school?””
“No.””
“After you and Ryan decided I wasn’t needed anymore?””
“That’s not what happened.””
I held up the birth certificate.
“Then explain this.””
Claire took a shaky breath.
“It’s complicated.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“It’s actually very simple.””
My voice broke.
“You had a child with my brother.””
She closed her eyes.
“Before you and I were together.””
The words stopped me.
I stared at her.
“What?””
She looked up.
“Before our marriage.””
The anger inside me paused.
Not disappeared.
Paused.
“Before?””
“Yes.””
I looked down at the document again.
My hands were still shaking.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
Claire didn’t answer immediately.
That hesitation told me everything.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“Of losing you.””
I looked at her.
“And you thought lying for eight years would make that better?””
“No.””
“Then why?””
She sat down on one of the storage boxes.
“I was nineteen.””
Her voice was barely a whisper.
“Ryan and I were together.””
I felt sick.
Not because I didn’t know.
Because I did.
Ryan had always been around.
He was the person who introduced me to Claire.
The person who stood beside me at our wedding.
The person who helped me buy this house.
The person who called himself Uncle Ryan.
I swallowed.
“What happened?””
Claire looked at the floor.
“We were young. Stupid. We thought we had time.””
“And then?””
“I got pregnant.””
I said nothing.
“Ryan panicked.””
That didn’t surprise me.
The old Ryan.
The Ryan I remembered before all of this.
The one who avoided responsibility.
The one who ran when things got difficult.
“What did he do?””
“He wanted me to give Ivy up.””
My chest tightened.
“But you didn’t.””
“No.””
Claire touched the edge of the paper.
“I looked at her, and I couldn’t.””
The anger became mixed with something else.
Confusion.
Because despite everything, that sounded like the Claire I knew.
A woman who loved her child.
“So where did I come in?””
She looked at me.
“Later.””
“Later.””
“Yes.””
I waited.
“I met you after Ivy was born.””
I nodded slowly.
I remembered.
Claire had told me she had a baby from a previous relationship.
She had told me Ivy’s father wasn’t involved.
She had told me he had walked away.
She had never said who he was.
Never.
“You told me her father left.””
“He did.””
I looked at her.
“But he came back.””
“Yes.””
“And you let him.””
Her eyes filled.
“I thought he wanted to help.””
I almost smiled.
“Ryan?””
“Yes.””
“Help.””
The word felt impossible.
“What did he want?””
Claire looked toward the boxes around us.
“I don’t know anymore.””
That answer scared me.
Because Claire wasn’t defending him.
She wasn’t protecting him.
She sounded like someone who had finally realized she had trusted the wrong person.
“When did Ryan start coming around?””
“About two years after we got married.””
“Why?””
“He said he wanted to be part of Ivy’s life.””
I closed my eyes.
I remembered that.
Ryan had cried when he asked to be her uncle.
He had said he wanted to make up for lost time.
I thought it was beautiful.
I thought my brother was finally becoming the person I always believed he could be.
I had no idea he was rewriting my entire family.
“Did Ivy know?””
Claire shook her head.
“No.””
“Does she know now?””
“No.””
I looked away.
Good.
At least one person had been spared.
For eight years, I had been Ivy’s dad.
Not because of blood.
Because I was there.
Because I held her when she was sick.
Because I stayed up all night when she had nightmares.
Because I taught her how to ride a bike.
Because I knew exactly how she liked her pancakes.
Blood didn’t erase that.
But someone had spent months trying to convince everyone that it did.
“Why the guardianship papers?””
Claire looked down.
“Because Ryan thought you were unstable.””
“He thought?””
“He said if something happened to you, Ivy needed protection.””
I stared at her.
“Protection from me.””
She didn’t respond.
“Did you believe him?””
She hesitated.
“I believed you were struggling.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
Her eyes filled.
“I don’t know.””
That hurt.
More than anything else.
Because I could understand fear.
I could understand confusion.
But I couldn’t understand my wife not knowing whether I was safe for my own daughter.
My phone buzzed.
I looked down.
A message from Ryan.
*We need to talk before you hear the rest from someone else.*
I stared at it.
Then another message appeared.
*I know you hate me right now. But I was trying to protect Ivy.*
I showed Claire.
She looked terrified.
“Don’t answer.””
“Why?””
“Because he knows.””
“Knows what?””
She looked at the birth certificate.
“Everything.””
I felt my anger return.
I called him.
He answered immediately.
“Ethan.””
My voice was cold.
“Why?””
Silence.
“Why did you do this?””
“I knew you would find out eventually.””
“That’s your answer?””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“I didn’t want it to happen this way.””
“You built a case against me.””
“No.””
“You collected my therapy records.””
“I was worried.””
“You watched my daughter.””
“I was trying to understand what was happening.””
“You forged my signature.””
Silence.
Then:
“Yes.””
I closed my eyes.
The honesty almost made it worse.
“You admit it?””
“I had to.””
“You had to?””
“Yes.””
His voice became desperate.
“Ethan, listen to me.””
“No.””
“Please.””
“You lied to me for eight years.””
“I protected Ivy for eight years.””
The sentence stopped me.
“What?””
Ryan took a breath.
“There’s something Claire never told you.””
I looked at her.
She looked away.
“What?””
Ryan was quiet.
Then he said:
“The night Ivy was born…”
I waited.
“Something happened.””
My heart started racing.
“What happened?””
“Claire was going to leave with Ivy.””
“Leave?””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
“I don’t know.””
“Then how do you know?””
“Because I stopped her.””
The storage unit suddenly felt smaller.
“What are you talking about?””
Ryan’s voice lowered.
“Ethan, you think this started six months ago.””
A pause.
“It didn’t.””
I looked at the papers around me.
The boxes.
The files.
The lies.
“When did it start?””
Ryan answered:
“The day you decided to become Ivy’s father.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“What does that mean?””
He didn’t answer.
“Ryan.””
Then he said something that made me go completely still.
“Ethan, you were never supposed to know the truth.””
I gripped the phone.
“Why?””
A long silence.
Then:
“Because the truth isn’t that Ivy isn’t your biological daughter.””
My breath stopped.
“Then what is it?””
Ryan’s voice became barely audible.
“The truth is that I’m not Ivy’s biological father either.””
I looked at Claire.
Her face went white.
And suddenly, every lie we had uncovered was hiding something even bigger.
Because if Ryan wasn’t Ivy’s father…
May you like
Then whose daughter was she?
And why had everyone spent eight years keeping the answer from me?
