Chapter 3: The Letter Hidden in the Closet

I stared at the envelope in Claire’s hand.

My name was written across the front in black ink.

Not printed.

Not typed.

Handwritten.

My handwriting.

Or something close enough to make my stomach turn.

For a moment, I couldn’t move.

The entire house was silent except for the faint hum of the refrigerator and the sound of the old wooden floor creaking beneath Claire’s feet.

She looked exhausted.

Not guilty.

Not angry.

Just exhausted.

And somehow, that made everything worse.

“Where did you get that?”” I asked.

Claire swallowed.

“Ethan…”

“Where?””

She looked down.

“Ryan gave it to me.””

My jaw tightened.

“Why?””

She didn’t answer.

I walked closer.

“Claire, I am asking you one simple question.””

Her eyes lifted to mine.

“Because he said you needed to know the truth.””

The words hit me strangely.

The truth.

Everyone kept using that word.

But nobody seemed willing to actually tell it.

I reached out my hand.

“Give it to me.””

Claire held it tighter.

“No.””

I stopped.

“What?””

She shook her head.

“I need to explain first.””

“No.””

“Ethan—”

“No.””

My voice was calm.

Too calm.

“I spent the last hour finding out my daughter thinks I don’t want her. I found a suitcase packed for her to leave. I found paperwork with my fake signature. I found out my brother has been coming here while I’m working.””

I looked directly at her.

“And now you’re standing in front of me holding a letter with my name on it.””

My voice dropped.

“Give me the letter.””

For a few seconds, she didn’t move.

Then her fingers slowly loosened.

The envelope fell into my hand.

It was heavier than paper should have felt.

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a single page.

The first line made my heart stop.

*Ethan, if you are reading this, then Claire finally decided to tell you what happened.*

I looked up.

Claire was watching me.

“Who wrote this?””

She looked away.

I forced myself to continue.

*You deserve to know why things changed. You deserve to know why Ivy has been scared. You deserve to know why Claire started talking about sending her away.*

My breathing became shallow.

The next sentence was worse.

*But before you judge your wife, you need to understand what she found.*

I looked at Claire.

“What did you find?””

She closed her eyes.

“Ethan…”

“What did you find?””

She sat down at the kitchen table.

For the first time all night, she looked like she wasn’t fighting.

“I found something in Ivy’s room.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“A notebook.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“A notebook?””

“Yes.””

“And?””

Claire’s hands shook slightly.

“She wrote things in it.””

“What things?””

She looked at me.

Things she said were happening.””

My stomach tightened.

“Like what?””

Claire didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me more than anything.

Finally, she whispered:

“She wrote that someone was watching her.””

I felt a chill.

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“Claire.””

“I don’t know!””

Her voice cracked.

“I didn’t know what to believe.””

I looked toward the stairs.

Toward Ivy’s room.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because every time I tried, you were exhausted.””

“That’s not an answer.””

She looked at me.

“Because I was scared.””

The anger inside me paused.

Not disappeared.

Just paused.

“Scared of what?””

Claire looked down.

“Of losing everything.””

I shook my head.

“I don’t understand.””

She wiped her eyes.

“You work constantly. You’re gone for days sometimes. Ivy worships you.

You’re the hero. The firefighter. The person everyone calls when things go wrong.””

She laughed bitterly.

“And I became the person she blamed for everything.””

“That’s what this is about?””

“No.””

Her voice became quieter.

“It’s about what happened six months ago.””

I froze.

“What happened six months ago?””

Claire looked at the letter.

“Ryan knows.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“Why does Ryan know?””

She didn’t respond.

That was enough.

I stood up.

“Claire.””

She looked at me.

“What happened?””

Before she could answer, we heard a noise.

A small sound.

A door opening upstairs.

Both of us looked toward the staircase.

“Ivy?””

No answer.

I moved immediately.

I ran upstairs.

Her bedroom door was slightly open.

“Ivy?””

The room was dark.

The bed was empty.

My heart dropped.

Then I saw her sitting on the floor beside her closet.

She was holding a small pink notebook.

The same one Claire had mentioned.

“Sweetheart.””

She looked up.

Her face was full of fear.

“I’m sorry.””

I walked closer.

“Why are you sorry?””

“Because I heard you and Mommy talking.””

I sat beside her.

“You don’t need to apologize.””

She hugged the notebook.

“I didn’t want you to know.””

“Know what?””

She looked down.

Then slowly handed me the notebook.

“Everything.””

I opened it.

The first page had Ivy’s handwriting.

Messy.

Small.

Careful.

*Things I don’t tell Daddy because he already has enough problems.*

My heart broke.

I looked at my daughter.

“Why would you think that?””

She shrugged.

“Because Mommy says you’re stressed.””

I turned the page.

There were dates.

Months of them.

Little entries written by an eight-year-old child.

*Monday: Mommy cried because Daddy was gone. She said I made everything harder.*

Another page.

*Thursday: Uncle Ryan came again. Mommy told him she couldn’t do this anymore.*

Another.

*Saturday: Mommy said boarding school would fix everything.*

My hands started shaking.

I flipped through faster.

Then I saw something that made me stop.

A drawing.

A picture Ivy had made.

It showed our house.

Me.

Her.

Claire.

And another person.

A man standing outside the window.

I looked at Ivy.

“Who is this?””

She went completely still.

“I don’t know.””

“You drew him.””

“I didn’t see his face.””

The room felt colder.

“What do you mean?””

She hugged herself.

“Sometimes at night, someone was outside.””

I stood up.

“What?””

She quickly grabbed my hand.

“Daddy, don’t be mad.””

“I’m not mad.””

My voice softened.

“I’m scared.””

She looked at me.

“I saw a shadow.””

“When?””

“Before Mommy found my notebook.””

I looked at the pages again.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

She looked away.

“Because Mommy said nobody would believe me.””

The sentence cut deeper than anything else.

Nobody would believe her.

My daughter had been living in fear inside her own home.

And I had been gone, believing everything was normal.

I heard footsteps behind me.

Claire stood in the doorway.

She looked at the notebook in my hand.

Her face changed.

“You found it.””

I turned around.

“You knew about this?””

“Yes.””

“You knew she was scared?””

“I knew she was confused.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You don’t get to change the words.””

Claire flinched.

“She was having nightmares.””

“She wrote dates.””

“I know.””

“She wrote about Ryan.””

Claire looked down.

That was the moment I knew.

There was something much bigger happening.

“Why is Ryan involved?””

Claire didn’t answer.

“Why has my brother been coming here?””

Still nothing.

“Claire.””

Finally, she whispered:

“Because Ryan was helping me.””

My entire body went still.

“Helping you do what?””

She looked at Ivy.

Then at me.

And the expression on her face told me I wasn’t going to like the answer.

“Help me prove that you weren’t safe for her.””

I stared at my wife.

The woman I had built a life with.

The woman who shared my bed.

The woman who had held our daughter the day she was born.

“What did you just say?””

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“I thought you were becoming like your father.””

The words landed like a punch.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

I felt my hands go numb.

My father had been gone for years.

But Claire knew exactly what that name meant.

Because I had spent years telling her about him.

About the man who disappeared whenever life became difficult.

About the man who made promises and broke them.

About the reason I became the opposite.

“I am nothing like him.””

“I know.””

“Then why would you say that?””

Claire looked away.

“Because Ryan told me things.””

My stomach dropped.

“What things?””

She didn’t answer.

The house became silent again.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Ryan.

I looked down.

There was a photo attached.

My finger hovered over it.

Then I opened it.

And the blood drained from my face.

It was a picture of a document.

A document with my name on it.

A document dated six months earlier.

A document that explained why Claire had packed Ivy’s suitcase.

At the bottom of the page was a signature.

Mine.

May you like

And underneath it, a sentence that made my entire world stop.

*Temporary guardianship transfer approved.*
