Chapter 6: The Ultimatum Before Departure
Vanessa arrived at 8:17 p.m.
I knew the exact time because I was standing in the hallway watching the clock when her headlights swept across the living room curtains.
Her car stopped in the driveway.
The engine remained running for almost a minute.
Then the driver's door opened.
She entered the house carrying a leather handbag and a thick manila folder. Her makeup was flawless, her hair carefully arranged, and her expression composed in the way it always became when she wanted to control a difficult conversation.
She looked at the three suitcases beside the stairs.
Then she looked at Maya.
"So you're really doing this.""
Maya's shoulders tightened.
I stepped forward.
"We're leaving tomorrow morning.""
Vanessa placed her handbag on the console table.
"I can see that.""
"Then let's talk.""
She held up the folder.
"That's why I'm here.""
I gestured toward the dining room.
"Everyone can sit down. No shouting. No threats. We discuss the facts.""
Vanessa laughed.
"You make it sound like a courtroom.""
"Maybe that's because we're dealing with financial documents, property records, and an account belonging to my daughter.""
Her smile disappeared.
Devin emerged from the kitchen.
"Mom?""
She turned toward him.
"Not now, Devin.""
He stopped.
"Actually, I think it is now.""
Vanessa stared at him.
"What did you say?""
Devin swallowed but held his ground.
"I think we should talk about the money.""
Her face changed.
Not dramatically.
Just enough for me to see the calculation behind her eyes.
She looked from Devin to Maya, then back to me.
"Wonderful. So you've all been holding secret meetings behind my back.""
"No one is holding secret meetings," I said.
"We're trying to understand what happened.""
Vanessa placed the folder on the dining table.
"Fine. Then let's discuss it.""
We sat down.
She opened the folder and removed several pages.
"The transfers from Maya's trust were temporary. I moved the funds because there was an urgent financial problem. I intended to replace them.""
"How much did you move?"" I asked.
"I don't remember the exact amount.""
"You must have records.""
"I do. They're in the folder.""
She slid a page toward me.
It contained a handwritten list of transactions, dates, and amounts. At the bottom was a total that was considerably smaller than the amount suggested by the statements Maya had found.
I compared the entries.
Several transfers were missing.
"Why doesn't this list include the April transfer?""
Vanessa leaned forward.
"Because that transfer was reversed.""
"Where's the reversal?""
"In another account.""
"Which account?""
She pressed her lips together.
"Andre, I am trying to explain this to you, and you keep treating every answer as a reason to accuse me of something else.""
"I'm asking where the money went.""
"And I'm telling you it was temporary!""
Devin shifted in his chair.
"Mom, what about Northstar?""
Vanessa went still.
I turned toward him.
"What do you know about Northstar?""
Devin glanced at his mother.
"Nothing. I just heard the name when she was on the phone.""
Vanessa closed the folder.
"This conversation is over.""
"No," I said.
"It isn't.""
She stood abruptly.
"You don't get to interrogate me in my own home!""
I rose too.
"This is my home, too. And the money belongs to Maya.""
Vanessa pointed at my daughter.
"She has been poisoning you against me for months!""
Maya's face drained of color.
I stepped between them.
"Do not speak to her that way.""
"Why? Because she's your precious little girl? Because Elena died and now everyone has to treat Maya like a saint?""
The words were so cruel that even Devin recoiled.
"Mom, stop," he said.
Vanessa rounded on him.
"You stay out of this!""
"No.""
His voice shook, but he continued.
"You keep telling me that family comes first. But whenever Maya needs something, you act like she's stealing from us. Whenever Andre asks questions, you tell me to lie. I'm tired of it.""
Vanessa stared at her son as if she no longer recognized him.
Then she turned to me.
"Fine. You want the truth? I'll give you the truth.""
She opened the folder again and removed a single sheet.
It was a notice from a debt-recovery company.
I read the name at the top.
Northstar Recovery Services.
Below it was an account reference, a balance, and a deadline.
The debt was several years old.
The original borrower was listed as Daniel Cross.
Vanessa had signed as a guarantor.
I looked up.
"You guaranteed Daniel's debt?""
Her jaw tightened.
"Before I met you.""
"Then why has money been coming out of Maya's trust?""
"I told you. I intended to replace it.""
"That isn't an answer.""
Vanessa pressed both palms against the table.
"Daniel was in trouble. He said the business was going to collapse. He promised he would repay everything within six months.""
"And you believed him?""
"I was younger then!""
"You were still responsible for what you signed.""
Her eyes flashed.
"You have no idea what it was like. Devin was a baby. Daniel was the only person I thought would stay with me, and when everything went wrong, he disappeared.""
Devin looked at her.
"You told me Dad left because he didn't want me.""
Vanessa turned toward him.
"He did leave.""
"But you said he never contacted you again.""
"He didn't contact me for years.""
"That's not what you said.""
She looked away.
I felt a familiar chill.
"How much do you owe?""
Vanessa said nothing.
"How much?""
She finally whispered a number.
It was enormous.
Far larger than the transfers from Maya's trust.
I sat back, trying to understand the scale of the problem.
The missing money had not paid off the debt. It had merely kept the account from escalating while the balance continued to grow.
"And the house?"" I asked.
Vanessa's eyes lifted.
"I was trying to refinance.""
"Without telling me?""
"I thought I could secure a loan, pay off the debt, replace Maya's money, and make everything right before anyone knew.""
"By using my signature?""
"I didn't forge anything!""
"Then why is there an authorization naming Daniel Cross that I don't remember signing?""
Her face went pale.
"I didn't know you had that document.""
"That isn't an answer.""
She grabbed the folder.
"The paperwork was handled through an adviser. I thought everything was legitimate.""
"Which adviser?""
She hesitated.
"Daniel.""
I stared at her.
"You let the man whose debt you guaranteed manage a financial application against our house?""
"He was trying to help me!""
"He was trying to protect his own interests!""
Vanessa slammed her hand on the table.
"You don't understand! If I hadn't paid those installments, they could have taken everything from me. They could have gone after Devin's future. I was trying to save my son!""
Maya flinched at the word son.
I noticed it immediately.
"So you used my daughter's money to protect yours?""
Vanessa's mouth opened.
No answer came.
For the first time, I saw the truth beneath her carefully rehearsed explanations.
She had decided that Devin's security mattered more than Maya's.
She had decided that my trust was a resource she could use without permission.
And she had decided that if Maya objected, she could silence her by making her feel guilty.
I stood.
"Michael is reviewing the records. The lender has frozen the application. Until we know exactly what happened, you will not access Maya's trust, and you will not submit any further financial documents using my information.""
Vanessa rose so quickly her chair scraped across the floor.
"You can't do that!""
"I can take steps to protect my accounts and my daughter's assets.""
"You're going to ruin me!""
"No. Your decisions are putting you in this position.""
She turned toward Maya.
"And you're happy now, aren't you? You finally got what you wanted.""
Maya stared at her.
"I wanted to go on vacation with my dad.""
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"You've always wanted him to yourself.""
Maya's eyes filled, but this time she didn't look away.
"No. I wanted you to stop making me feel like I didn't belong.""
The room went silent.
Vanessa stared at her stepdaughter.
For one moment, I thought she might finally hear her.
Instead, she picked up her handbag.
"Fine. Go to Maui. Have your little victory.""
She headed toward the stairs.
I followed her.
"Where are you going?""
"To pack.""
"You're not coming on the trip.""
She spun around.
"What?""
"Not until the financial situation is clarified. I'm not leaving the house and my daughter with unresolved questions about a loan application, and I'm not pretending everything is normal.""
Vanessa's eyes widened.
"You're excluding me from my own family vacation?""
I held her gaze.
"You excluded my daughter from hers.""
Her face twisted with anger.
"You'll regret this.""
She disappeared into the bedroom and shut the door.
I returned to the dining room.
Maya was sitting motionless, staring at the table.
Devin stood beside her.
"Are you okay?"" he asked.
Maya shrugged.
"I don't know.""
He pulled out the chair beside her and sat down.
"I'm sorry.""
She shook her head.
"You didn't do this.""
"But I should have stood up for you sooner.""
Maya looked at him.
"You were scared of her, too.""
Devin stared at his hands.
"Yeah.""
For a moment, they sat together without speaking.
Then Maya reached across the table and squeezed his wrist.
I turned away to give them privacy.
My phone vibrated.
Michael.
I answered in the hallway.
"We have an update," he said.
"The lender has confirmed that the application is under formal review. No funds were released, and no property transfer was completed.""
"Good.""
"There's another development. The electronic records show that the document naming Daniel Cross was uploaded through a secure portal linked to an email account that wasn't yours.""
"Whose account?""
"We're still verifying the ownership, but the address appears to be associated with Vanessa.""
I closed my eyes.
"So she submitted it.""
"We can't make that conclusion yet. The evidence suggests it was submitted through an account connected to her, but we need the complete audit trail before making any allegations.""
"Understood.""
"And Andre, I recommend that you do not leave the matter unattended while you're traveling. Keep copies of everything, maintain contact with the lender, and make sure your accounts are secure.""
"I will.""
When I hung up, I heard the bedroom door open.
Vanessa emerged carrying a small suitcase.
She had changed into travel clothes.
"I've decided I'm coming," she announced.
I stared at her.
"What?""
"We're a family. We can resolve this in Maui. There's no reason to punish everyone because of a misunderstanding.""
"This isn't a misunderstanding.""
"Andre, please."" Her voice softened.
"I've made mistakes. I admit that. But I love you.
I love this family. I don't want one terrible financial decision to destroy everything we've built.""
For a moment, I saw the woman I had married.
The woman who used to leave coffee beside my laptop when I worked late.
The woman who had once sat beside Maya during a thunderstorm because my daughter was afraid of the noise.
I wanted to believe those memories meant the woman standing before me could still make things right.
But memories were not evidence.
And affection was not permission.
"Did you submit the property authorization?"" I asked.
Vanessa's face tightened.
"I told you, I thought the paperwork was legitimate.""
"That's not what I asked.""
She looked toward the staircase.
Then she lowered her voice.
"If I tell you everything, will you at least let me come on the trip?""
I stared at her.
"Tell me everything first.""
She set her suitcase down.
"Daniel said he could arrange a private loan. He said we could pay off the debt without involving the bank. He needed my help getting the financial documents together.""
"Why did he need my signature?""
"He said the property would be used as collateral.""
"Did I authorize that?""
She swallowed.
"You signed a general authorization.""
"Michael says the document may not match the electronic record.""
"I don't know anything about that.""
"Did you submit it?""
Vanessa's eyes filled.
"I uploaded the documents Daniel gave me.""
The admission settled between us.
"Did you know the authorization might not be valid?""
She shook her head.
"I didn't think it mattered. Daniel said it was standard procedure.""
I stared at her, searching for any sign that she understood the seriousness of what she had done.
"Then why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I knew you'd say no.""
The honesty was devastating.
She had known I wouldn't approve the loan.
She had known the money wasn't hers to move.
She had known Maya would be hurt if the truth came out.
And she had chosen to proceed anyway.
I stepped back.
"You're not coming to Maui.""
Vanessa's expression hardened.
"Then we're finished.""
I looked at her for a long moment.
"Maybe we are.""
She picked up her suitcase and returned to the bedroom.
A few minutes later, I heard the front door slam.
Through the window, I watched her car disappear down the street.
I didn't follow her.
I didn't call her.
I went into the kitchen, where Maya and Devin were waiting.
"Is she gone?"" Maya asked.
"For tonight.""
She looked at the suitcases beside the stairs.
"Are we still leaving tomorrow?""
"Yes.""
Devin nodded.
"Then I'll help load the car.""
Maya stood.
"I'll get my backpack.""
She went upstairs.
I remained at the table, staring at the folder Vanessa had left behind.
Inside was the debt notice, a copy of the loan application, and a folded page I hadn't seen before.
I opened it.
It was a handwritten note from Daniel.
Vanessa, once the property authorization is accepted, we can settle the Northstar balance and deal with the remaining trust issue afterward. Andre doesn't need to know until the funds are secured.
At the bottom was a second line.
Make sure Maya is out of the house when the final documents are submitted.
I read it twice.
Then I photographed the note and sent it to Michael.
My hands were shaking.
This wasn't merely about a debt Vanessa had hidden before our marriage.
Someone had made a plan involving our home, my daughter's inheritance, and a document bearing my name.
And they had specifically wanted Maya away from the house when it happened.
I turned the page over.
There was one more sentence written in smaller letters.
If Andre refuses, we use the original agreement.
I stared at those words.
What original agreement?
Before I could search the folder for an answer, my phone rang.
Vanessa.
I almost let it go to voicemail.
Then I answered.
Her voice was barely recognizable.
"André, you need to listen to me. Daniel has something that belongs to you, and if he uses it, you could lose more than the house.""
I gripped the phone.
"What does he have?""
She began crying.
"The original agreement," she whispered.
"The one you signed before we got married.""
I looked at the folder on the table.
"What agreement, Vanessa?""
She took a shaky breath.
"The agreement that gives Daniel control over something you don't even know exists.""
Then the call disconnected.
I stood alone in the kitchen, surrounded by our suitcases and the evidence of a life I no longer understood.
Tomorrow morning, I was supposed to take my daughter to Maui.
May you like
Instead, I was beginning to fear that the vacation was only the first piece of a much larger trap.
And somewhere in Daniel Cross's possession was a document that might explain why Vanessa had spent years trying to keep Maya out of the family.
