Chapter 5: The Son Who Knew More Than He Admitted

At six the next morning, I found Devin sitting on the front steps.

He wore the same navy sweatshirt he'd had on the previous day. His suitcase stood beside him, untouched, and a paper cup of coffee rested between his sneakers.

The sky was still gray.

He looked up when I opened the door.

"Morning, Andre.""

I stepped onto the porch.

"Couldn't sleep?""

He shook his head.

"Mom's been calling me all night.""

I sat beside him.

"What does she want?""

"She keeps asking whether you found anything in her office.""

My stomach tightened.

"What did you tell her?""

"Nothing.""

He rubbed his palms against his jeans.

"She told me not to talk to you about Daniel.""

I turned toward him.

"What did she say about Daniel?""

Devin stared at the driveway.

"That he's a liar. That he wants to steal from us. That he's only helping Mom because he thinks she'll take him back.""

He swallowed.

"But I don't think that's the whole story.""

I waited.

Devin had always been a quiet boy, but I had mistaken his silence for indifference. He rarely argued with Vanessa. He rarely asked for anything. He seemed content to let her make every decision.

Now I wondered how much of that had been self-preservation.

"Devin, I need you to understand that I'm not asking you to choose between your mother and me.""

He gave a humorless laugh.

"Everyone keeps saying that. But somehow I'm always the one who has to prove I'm loyal.""

He looked at me.

"Mom says if I tell you anything about Daniel, I'm betraying her.""

I folded my hands.

"You're allowed to tell the truth without betraying anyone.""

Devin looked away.

Then he reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.

"There's something you should see.""

He opened a folder of screenshots.

The first was a text conversation between him and Vanessa.

Mom: If Andre asks about the loan, tell him it was a routine refinancing inquiry.

Devin: Why would he ask me?

Mom: Because Maya has been snooping. If she found anything, she'll make it sound worse than it is.

Another message followed.

Mom: You need to remember who has been taking care of you all these years.

Devin scrolled down.

Devin: I know.

Mom: Then don't make things harder for me.

He locked the screen.

"She sent those last night," he said.

"After you left for the store.""

I felt a cold anger rise through me.

"Why did she send them to you?""

"Because she thinks I'll do whatever she says.""

"Will you?""

He looked at me for a long time.

"No.""

The word came out quietly, but it carried a weight I hadn't expected.

Devin took a breath.

"I didn't know she was going to leave Maya behind. I swear. She told me Maya wanted to stay with Rachel because she was stressed about school.""

I nodded.

"I believe you.""

His eyes widened slightly.

"You do?""

"Yes.""

He looked down at the cup between his feet.

"She told me not to ask questions about the trust, either.""

"What did you know about it?""

"Only that Mom was handling some money for Maya. I thought it was part of the paperwork after her grandmother died.""

"Did she ever tell you the money was being used for you?""

Devin's face reddened.

"She paid for my car last year.""

I waited.

"She said it was a gift from her savings. She said you knew about it.""

"I didn't.""

"I figured that out yesterday.""

He pressed his palms against his eyes.

"I feel sick.""

I placed a hand on his shoulder.

"You didn't know where the money came from.""

"But I should have asked.""

"Maybe. But the person responsible for explaining those transactions is the person who made them.""

He nodded, though he still looked ashamed.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Devin said, "There's something else.""

He opened his phone again.

"This is from two weeks ago. I found it while looking for a picture Mom sent me.""

The screenshot showed a message from Vanessa to Lauren.

Once they're both away, Daniel can finish the paperwork. Andre won't be able to interfere if the bank accepts the authorization.

Lauren had replied:

What about Maya?

Vanessa's response was chillingly simple.

She doesn't need to know anything. By the time they come back, everything will be settled.

I read the exchange twice.

"Does Daniel know you have this?""

"No.""

"Does your mother?""

"No. I took the screenshot because it sounded wrong, but I didn't know what it meant.""

I sent a copy to Michael.

Then I sat back and looked at Devin.

"Why did you decide to show me this now?""

He looked toward the house.

"Because Maya's my sister.""

The words surprised me.

Devin seemed to notice.

"I know she's technically my stepsister," he continued.

"But she's been around since I was nine. She helped me study for math tests. She stayed up with me when I got sick. She even covered for me when I broke Mom's favorite vase.""

He gave a faint, sad smile.

"She didn't have to do any of that.""

I thought about Maya asking me not to hate Devin.

She had been protecting him, too.

"Then let's make sure she knows that," I said.

Devin's eyes filled, but he quickly wiped them.

"I don't want to go to Maui anymore.""

"Why not?""

"Because if I leave, Mom might do something worse. And if I stay, she'll say I'm choosing you over her.""

I understood the trap.

Vanessa had made loyalty a test that nobody could pass without surrendering something.

"You don't have to decide anything this morning," I told him.

"But you're welcome to come with us if you want to. You're also welcome to stay with Rachel if that's what feels safest.""

He looked surprised.

"You'd still take me?""

"Of course.""

"Even after what Mom did?""

"You're not your mother's decisions, Devin.""

He stared at me.

Then he nodded.

"I want to come. I want Maya to have someone on her side.""

I squeezed his shoulder.

"Good.""

We went inside together.

Maya was sitting at the kitchen table, eating toast while scrolling through pictures of Maui on her phone.

When Devin entered, she stiffened.

He stopped a few feet away.

"Hey.""

"Hey," she replied.

He shoved his hands into his pockets.

"I owe you an apology.""

Maya looked at him cautiously.

"For what?""

"For not asking more questions. For letting Mom convince me you didn't want to come. And for not noticing how often she made you feel like you were in the way.""

Maya looked down at her plate.

"You didn't know everything.""

"That doesn't mean I couldn't have noticed something.""

She was silent for a moment.

Then she pushed a second piece of toast toward him.

"You're hungry.""

Devin stared at the toast.

A laugh escaped him, followed by a shaky breath.

"You're seriously offering me food right now?""

"You're always hungry.""

He sat beside her.

For the first time in days, they looked like the siblings I had hoped they would become.

I watched them for a moment before returning to my office.

Michael called fifteen minutes later.

"We've reviewed the screenshots," he said.

"They give us a clearer picture of the timing, but we still need the original records. I'm also contacting the lender's legal department.""

"What about the property authorization?""

"The lender has frozen the application pending verification. No money has been released, and no transfer of ownership has been recorded. That's good news.""

I exhaled.

"Can we stop them from trying again?""

"We can notify the relevant institutions, secure your accounts, and place appropriate restrictions where available. I also recommend changing your passwords and reviewing who has access to your financial information.""

"I'll do it today.""

"One more thing. The authorization naming Daniel Cross may not be valid. We need the electronic audit trail to determine whether your signature was attached to a document you actually approved.""

"How long will that take?""

"Possibly a few days.""

A few days.

Vanessa had planned a week away.

The timing was too precise to ignore.

After the call, I went through my email account and changed my passwords. I enabled additional security checks and removed several devices I no longer recognized.

Then I reviewed the shared household accounts.

I found a notification from a financial service I didn't remember using.

The account had been created eleven months earlier under Vanessa's email address, with my name listed as a secondary contact.

I downloaded the available statements.

Most transactions were ordinary.

Then I found a recurring payment to a company called Northstar Recovery Services.

The first payment had been made eighteen months earlier.

The amount was substantial.

The second payment had been made the following month.

And the third.

I opened the transaction details.

The payment reference contained a loan number.

I forwarded it to Michael.

His response came ten minutes later.

This appears to be a debt-recovery account. We need to establish who owes the debt and whether any funds from Maya's trust were used to service it.

I searched the number in my email.

A message from Vanessa appeared.

It was dated two years earlier.

Andre, I need you to review the attached household refinancing documents. Nothing major. Just administrative changes that could save us money.

I remembered the message.

I had been on a flight to Denver. I had opened the email on my phone, glanced at the first page, and replied that she could handle it.

The attachment was no longer available in the email thread.

I sat back in my chair.

Vanessa had repeatedly used my trust in her as permission to make decisions I never fully understood.

I had wanted to be a good husband.

I had let her manage the details.

And she had turned my absence into an opportunity.

A knock sounded at the office door.

Maya stood there holding a small black notebook.

"Dad, I found something in my old school backpack.""

She placed it on my desk.

"What is it?""

"My notes from when I was trying to understand the bank statements.""

I opened the notebook.

Maya had carefully recorded dates, amounts, and transaction descriptions. Her handwriting was small but neat.

At the back, she had copied a reference number from a statement.

I compared it with the loan number in the Northstar records.

They matched.

I stared at the page.

"Maya, where did you find this reference number?""

"On one of the statements. I didn't know what it meant, so I wrote it down.""

She pointed to a date.

"This was the same week Vanessa bought Devin's car.""

I studied the entries.

Several transfers from the trust appeared shortly before payments to Northstar Recovery Services.

It wasn't proof that the money had gone directly from Maya's trust to the debt collector. We still needed the underlying records.

But the dates were too closely aligned to dismiss.

I closed the notebook.

"You did a good job keeping track of this.""

Maya looked uncertain.

"I wasn't trying to spy on her.""

"I know.""

"I just wanted to understand why my balance kept getting smaller.""

I stood and hugged her.

"You shouldn't have had to figure this out by yourself.""

She rested her head against my chest.

"Are we still going to Maui?""

"Yes.""

"Even with everything happening?""

"Especially now. We need a few days away from this house, and you deserve the vacation we promised you.""

She smiled faintly.

Then she hesitated.

"Dad, can I ask you something?""

"Anything.""

"If Vanessa really owes money, could someone come here and take our house?""

I looked at her carefully.

"The house is not being taken from us right now. The loan application has been frozen. Michael is helping me protect our property and understand the records.""

She nodded.

"But if she did something wrong, would you make her leave?""

I took a breath.

"I'll make whatever decision is necessary to keep this home safe for you. I can't promise you exactly what that will look like yet.""

Maya accepted the answer, though I could see the fear lingering behind her eyes.

That afternoon, Rachel arrived to help us finish packing.

She brought sandwiches, a bag of snacks for the flight, and an envelope containing a photograph of Elena.

"I thought Maya might want this," she said.

Maya took the picture carefully.

It showed her mother sitting on a beach, her hair blown across her face, laughing at whoever had taken the photograph.

"I remember this day," Maya whispered.

Rachel smiled.

"Your mother made your father carry three bags because she refused to leave any of her books at the hotel.""

Maya laughed.

For a moment, the house felt warm again.

Then Rachel turned to me.

"Andre, can I speak to you privately?""

We stepped into the hallway.

She lowered her voice.

"I need to tell you something about Vanessa.""

I waited.

"Last month, she called me and asked whether Maya could stay with me for a few weeks.""

My stomach tightened.

"What?""

"She said you were considering a work assignment overseas and that Maya would be happier away from the house while you settled things.""

"She never told me that.""

"I know. I asked her why she didn't just discuss it with you, and she became defensive.""

"What exactly did she say?""

Rachel hesitated.

"She said Maya was becoming an obstacle to your future.""

I stared at her.

An obstacle.

My daughter.

The child who had spent years trying not to take up too much space in her own home.

"Did she explain what she meant?""

"No. But she asked whether I would be willing to take Maya for an extended period if something happened to your marriage.""

I felt the floor shift beneath me.

Vanessa hadn't merely planned to exclude Maya from a vacation.

She had apparently been considering how to remove her from the household altogether.

Before I could respond, my phone vibrated.

A message from Vanessa.

I'm coming home tonight. We need to settle this before you leave.

A second message appeared immediately afterward.

And Andre, bring Maya downstairs when I arrive. This concerns her future.

I looked at Rachel.

Then I looked toward the kitchen, where Maya was laughing with Devin over a photograph of a sea turtle.

For the first time, I understood why Vanessa had been so determined to keep Maya away from the vacation.

She hadn't simply wanted a peaceful week without my daughter.

She wanted time.

Time to move money.

Time to secure a loan.

May you like

Time to arrange something that would change our family before I understood what was happening.

And now she was coming home to make one final demand.
