Chapter 4: The Debt That Could Destroy Us
For several seconds after Daniel Cross mentioned the house, I couldn't speak.
I stood in my kitchen with the phone pressed against my ear, staring at the authorization form Vanessa had left on the counter. The signature at the bottom looked like mine. The date looked familiar. But the more I studied it, the more I felt as if I were looking at evidence from a crime committed in my own home.
"What did Vanessa plan to do with my house?"" I demanded.
Daniel sighed.
"You're asking the wrong person. You need to ask your wife.""
"She's not answering my calls.""
"Then perhaps you should consider why.""
I gripped the edge of the counter.
"You called me. You mentioned my daughter's trust. You mentioned a debt. Now you're telling me to ask Vanessa questions you clearly know the answers to.""
"I know some of the answers," Daniel replied.
"But I'm not going to be the man who explains your wife's secrets to her husband.""
"You've already inserted yourself into my daughter's finances. I think you've said enough to earn a few questions.""
His voice hardened.
"Listen carefully, Andre. I didn't create this situation. Vanessa came to me because she needed money.
She said she was protecting her family. She said you would never understand.""
"Protecting her family from what?""
"Ask her.""
The line went dead.
I stared at my phone.
Then I called Michael.
He answered while I was still pacing between the kitchen and the living room.
"Did you speak to Daniel Cross?"" he asked.
"How did you know?""
"His office contacted me after receiving the inquiry about the authorization. They said he wanted to clarify his role.""
"He's involved in the trust transfers. He says Vanessa owes someone money and was planning to do something with the house.""
Michael paused.
"Don't confront her about the house until we understand whether any documents have been filed. I'll have our office check the public property records and review your mortgage paperwork. In the meantime, don't sign anything she sends you.""
"How serious could this be?""
"I can't tell you yet. But if someone used your signature without authorization, that's a separate issue. We need the original electronic audit trail.""
I looked toward the stairs.
Maya was sitting on her bedroom floor, carefully folding her blue dress into her suitcase.
She had no idea that the adults who were supposed to protect her might have been fighting over the money her grandmother had left her.
"Michael," I said, "I need you to move quickly.""
"We will.""
I ended the call and walked upstairs.
Maya looked up as I entered.
"Is something wrong?""
I sat beside her suitcase.
"Someone called me about the trust. I'm trying to understand what's happened.""
"Was it Vanessa?""
"No. It was Daniel Cross.""
Her hands stopped folding.
"Devin's dad?""
I nodded.
Maya looked toward the door.
"Is he coming here?""
"Not unless we decide there's a reason for him to.""
She picked at a loose thread on her dress.
"Vanessa used to get really nervous whenever his name came up.""
"Did she ever say why?""
"She said he was a bad person. She said he left Devin when he was little and only came back when he wanted something.""
I remembered the photograph. Vanessa and Daniel standing close together at the charity dinner, smiling as if they had never been strangers.
"Did you know they were still in contact?""
Maya shook her head.
"Not until I saw his name on the papers.""
She lowered her voice.
"Dad, I don't think Devin knows everything either.""
"Why do you say that?""
"Because sometimes he asks Vanessa why his dad doesn't call. She always says Daniel is selfish and doesn't care about him.""
I thought of Devin's face that morning, the way he had stood in the entryway while his mother screamed at me.
He had looked ashamed.
Not angry.
Ashamed.
"Have you talked to Devin about the vacation?""
"Not really. He texted me last night.""
"What did he say?""
Maya reached for her phone and showed me the message.
I'm sorry about what Mom did. I didn't know she was leaving you behind until she told me you were staying with Aunt Rachel.
Below it was another message.
She said you wanted to stay home.
I read it twice.
Vanessa hadn't merely excluded Maya. She had lied to her son, too.
"Did you answer him?""
"I said it was okay.""
I looked at her.
"Was it okay?""
"No.""
The honesty in that single word nearly broke my heart.
"Then you don't have to pretend it was.""
Maya leaned against my shoulder.
"I don't hate Devin. He's annoying sometimes, but he's not the one who did this.""
"I know.""
"And I don't want you to hate him either.""
"I don't.""
She seemed relieved.
After a moment, she asked, "Do you think Vanessa loves us?""
I couldn't give her a simple answer.
I believed Vanessa had loved me once. I believed she had cared about Maya in the beginning, or at least had wanted to. But whatever feelings had existed, they had become tangled with resentment, control, and secrets.
"I think love should make people feel safe," I finally said.
"Whatever Vanessa feels, the way she's treating you isn't acceptable.""
Maya nodded.
Then she returned to packing.
I stayed with her until the suitcase was ready.
Downstairs, my phone rang again.
Vanessa.
I answered immediately.
"Where are you?"" I asked.
"At Lauren's.""
"Come home. We need to talk.""
"I have nothing to discuss with you while you're treating me like a criminal.""
"Daniel Cross called me.""
Silence.
Not a gasp. Not a question.
Just silence.
Then Vanessa said, "What did he tell you?""
"That you owe money. That you were planning to do something with the house. And that the trust transfers weren't what I think they were.""
Her breathing changed.
"Daniel has no right to talk about our private affairs.""
"Then tell me the truth.""
"I have been telling you the truth!""
"Have you?""
"Andre, you need to understand something. I have sacrificed everything for this family. I have managed the household, raised your daughter, supported your career, and made sure Devin had opportunities. Now, because Maya found some paperwork, you're ready to destroy our marriage.""
"Stop bringing Maya into this as if she's responsible for your decisions.""
"She found the documents!""
"Documents involving her money.""
Vanessa's voice rose.
"That money was sitting in an account doing nothing while this family needed help!""
My blood went cold.
"What did you say?""
She went quiet.
I spoke slowly.
"Did you use Maya's inheritance to pay your debts?""
"I borrowed it.""
"Without asking her?""
"She's fifteen, Andre! What was I supposed to do, ask a child for permission to keep the lights on?""
"The lights are paid by me. The mortgage is paid by me. Her school is paid by me. What debt could possibly justify taking her money?""
Vanessa began crying.
It was a sound I knew well. In the past, I would have lowered my voice, softened my questions, and tried to comfort her.
This time, I waited.
Finally, she said, "I was trying to protect you.""
"From what?""
She inhaled shakily.
"From a mistake I made before we married.""
I closed my eyes.
"What mistake?""
"I can't explain it over the phone.""
"Then come home and explain it in person.""
"I need time.""
"You've had years.""
She began to protest, but I ended the call.
I stood in the kitchen for a long time, listening to the refrigerator hum.
Then I noticed something on the counter.
The property tax statement.
It had arrived two days earlier, and Vanessa had placed it beneath a stack of supermarket coupons.
I picked it up.
The amount was correct. The property address was correct. But a small notice printed near the bottom caught my eye.
Please contact our office if ownership or mailing information has recently changed.
I opened my laptop and logged into the county property records website.
The house was still listed under my name.
There was no recorded sale.
No completed transfer.
But a document had been submitted for review three weeks earlier.
A document related to a proposed home-equity loan.
I stared at the screen.
I had never applied for one.
I clicked the available details.
The application listed me as the primary borrower and Vanessa as the authorized contact.
The proposed amount was large enough to cover the transfers missing from Maya's trust several times over.
My hands went cold.
I took screenshots and sent them to Michael.
Then I called the lender's fraud department using the number on its official website.
A representative verified my identity and placed me on hold while she reviewed the application.
When she returned, her tone had changed.
"Mr. Bennett, I can confirm that an application was received using your information. However, I can't discuss the full details until our investigation team reviews the file.""
"Did I sign it?""
"I can't confirm that at this stage.""
"Was it approved?""
"No funds have been disbursed.""
I exhaled.
"Can you stop the application?""
"I can place a fraud alert and refer it for review. You'll need to submit a written statement confirming that you did not authorize the application.""
"Do that.""
She gave me the case number.
I wrote it down.
When the call ended, I stared at the number until the digits blurred.
Vanessa hadn't merely taken money from Maya's trust.
She had apparently attempted to borrow against our home without my knowledge.
And she had done it while arranging a vacation that would take both me and Maya away from the house.
I heard footsteps behind me.
Maya stood in the doorway.
"Dad?""
I turned the laptop toward myself.
"Everything okay?"" she asked.
I forced myself to breathe.
"We're going to get some answers.""
She looked at the papers spread across the table.
"Is the house in trouble?""
I wanted to protect her from the details. I wanted to tell her that none of this was her concern.
But she had already been kept in the dark for too long.
"Someone submitted a loan application using my information. I'm having it investigated.""
Her face went pale.
"Because of the money?""
"I don't know yet.""
She looked down at her hands.
"Maybe I should stay with Aunt Rachel after all.""
"No.""
The word came out more sharply than I intended.
Maya flinched.
I immediately softened my voice.
"Sweetheart, you don't have to leave your home because someone else has made bad decisions.""
"But what if Vanessa comes back?""
"Then she'll have to speak to me.""
"And what if she gets angry?""
I crouched in front of her.
"You will never be responsible for managing her anger. Do you understand?""
She nodded slowly.
I held her hands.
"You're coming on this vacation because you deserve to be there. And when we come back, we're going to deal with whatever needs dealing with.""
Maya leaned forward and hugged me.
For a moment, I held her in the quiet kitchen and wished I could make every threat disappear.
Then my email chimed.
Michael had replied.
His message contained one sentence.
Andre, the lender has flagged a second issue. The application includes a document transferring partial authority over your property to another person.
I opened the attachment.
The name appeared beneath the authorization clause.
Daniel Cross.
And the document had been submitted three weeks before Vanessa told me that Maya wasn't going on vacation.
I looked at the date again.
Then I called Michael.
"Tell me what I need to do.""
His answer was immediate.
"Preserve every document. Don't confront Daniel. And Andre, whatever you do, don't let Vanessa persuade you to sign anything else.""
I glanced at the front door.
May you like
For the first time, I wondered whether my wife had planned to return from Maui to a house that no longer belonged entirely to me.
And whether the vacation had been her way of buying herself enough time to make that happen.
