Chapter 9: The Truth Ryan Never Knew

The boardroom emptied within minutes.

Daniel was escorted out.

Vanessa remained under questioning by the company's legal team.

Ryan stood beside the conference table, holding the DNA report as if it might disappear.

I couldn't stop staring at the date.

October 14.

One day before he divorced me.

"Who submitted this sample?"" I asked.

Ryan didn't answer.

He was reading the document again.

"Ryan.""

He looked up.

"Someone used my medical records.""

"Whose sample was tested?""

He checked the page.

"An unidentified prenatal sample. The report says the laboratory received a blood specimen from a private clinic.""

I felt my knees weaken.

"Which clinic?""

Ryan read the name.

St. Catherine's Medical Center.

My clinic.

I gripped the back of a chair.

"That's where I had my ultrasound.""

Ryan looked at me.

"You went there on October 14?""

I nodded slowly.

"That was the day I discovered I was pregnant.""

He closed his eyes.

For several seconds, he didn't speak.

Then he whispered, "Someone knew.""

I felt anger rising again.

"Someone knew about our babies before I even got home.""

Ryan looked toward the conference room doors.

"Daniel.""

"Maybe.""

"Or Vanessa.""

"Maybe.""

He placed the report on the table.

"I want the original laboratory records.""

"You'll get them through your lawyers.""

He looked at me.

"Claire, please. I need to understand.""

I folded my arms.

"Then understand this. Someone had access to my medical information, my personal belongings, and a DNA report. This wasn't a simple divorce. It was a coordinated attempt to control our lives.""

Ryan nodded.

"I know.""

"No, you don't.""

My voice shook.

"You went home after signing those papers. You had your freedom. You had Vanessa. You had your company.""

I pointed toward the report.

"I went home pregnant with three babies and no husband.""

His eyes filled.

"I can't change that.""

"No. But you can stop expecting me to forgive you because you're finally suffering.""

He looked down.

"I don't expect forgiveness.""

"Good.""

My phone rang.

Sophie.

I answered immediately.

"Claire, where are you?""

"Whitmore headquarters.""

"I need you to come back to the hotel.""

"What happened?""

There was a pause.

"Someone tried to enter the suite.""

My heart stopped.

"Are the children okay?""

"Yes. They're with security in the private lounge. But the person left something behind.""

"What?""

"A photograph.""

I turned toward Ryan.

"What photograph?""

Sophie lowered her voice.

"Three children standing outside their school. Taken yesterday.""

I couldn't breathe.

"Call the police.""

"I already have.""

I ended the call.

Ryan had heard enough.

"What happened?""

"Someone photographed the children.""

His expression became cold.

"Let's go.""

We reached the hotel within fifteen minutes.

Sophie was waiting near the private elevator.

She looked shaken.

"Claire.""

I hurried toward her.

"Where are they?""

"Inside.""

I pushed open the door.

Alexander was sitting on the sofa reading a book.

Ethan was building a tower.

Lily was eating cookies.

The moment they saw me, all three ran toward me.

"Mommy!""

I hugged them tightly.

"Are you okay?""

Alexander nodded.

"Some men came to the door.""

Ethan frowned.

"They were rude.""

Lily held up her cookie.

"One of them dropped this.""

I looked at her.

"What?""

She pointed toward the table.

There was a small silver key beside the plate.

I picked it up.

It had a number engraved on one side.

A-17.

Ryan approached.

"Where did you find that?""

Lily shrugged.

"By the door.""

Ryan took the key carefully.

His expression changed.

"That's an access key.""

"For what?""

He turned it over.

"An old records facility.""

I looked at Sophie.

"Can you arrange security?""

"Already done.""

Ryan called his head of security.

Within minutes, two additional officers arrived.

But I wasn't going to wait for someone else to tell me what was happening.

I wanted the truth.

An hour later, Ryan returned from a call.

"The facility belongs to a company that stored Whitmore's confidential legal records.""

I stared at the key.

"Why would someone leave it here?""

"Because they want us to find something.""

I frowned.

"Or because they want us to walk into a trap.""

Ryan nodded.

"I've already arranged for police to accompany us.""

I looked toward the children.

"They're not coming.""

"Of course not.""

Sophie agreed to stay with them.

Ryan and I drove to the records facility.

It was an old brick building near the river.

The security guard checked Ryan's identification before opening the entrance.

"Mr. Whitmore. We weren't expecting you.""

Ryan held up the key.

"Who accessed storage unit A-17?""

The guard checked his computer.

"Mr. Daniel Pierce. Yesterday afternoon.""

I exchanged a look with Ryan.

The guard led us down a narrow corridor.

The air smelled of dust and old paper.

Unit A-17 contained several locked filing cabinets.

Ryan inserted the key.

The drawer opened.

Inside was a single box.

My name was written across the top.

CLAIRE WHITMORE.

I felt my throat tighten.

Ryan carefully removed the lid.

Inside were copies of my medical records, the original ultrasound photographs, and a small envelope.

My hands began shaking.

I opened the envelope.

There was a letter addressed to me.

The handwriting was unfamiliar.

Claire,

If you're reading this, then Daniel's plan has finally begun to collapse.

Five years ago, I was the person who submitted the prenatal sample from St. Catherine's. I was also the person who discovered the forged custody agreement.

I should have told you.

I should have stopped him.

But I was afraid.

The letter was signed.

*Margaret Whitmore.*

Ryan went completely still.

"My mother.""

I looked at him.

"Your mother knew?""

He nodded slowly.

"She died two years ago.""

I continued reading.

Your husband never knew about the triplets because Daniel intercepted the report before it reached him. I kept a copy because I knew one day the truth would matter.

But there's something more important.

Daniel wasn't acting alone.

I stopped.

Ryan took the letter from my hands.

His eyes moved across the final paragraph.

Then his face changed.

"Who else?"" I whispered.

He didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he turned the page.

There was one final sentence.

The person who ordered the original divorce was not Vanessa. It was someone inside the Whitmore family who believed Claire's children would destroy the company.

Ryan slowly lowered the letter.

I stared at him.

"Who?""

He looked at me.

For the first time since I had known him, he seemed genuinely frightened.

"My uncle.""

"Richard?""

He nodded.

Richard Whitmore was the chairman of the family foundation.

He had attended our wedding.

He had given a speech about loyalty, family, and legacy.

He had once called me the daughter he never had.

I felt sick.

"Why would he do that?""

Ryan looked toward the open filing cabinet.

"Because he believed my children would inherit control of the company.""

He pulled out another document.

It was a copy of a private financial agreement.

Richard's signature appeared at the bottom.

So did Daniel's.

And Vanessa's.

I stared at the three names.

They had all been working together.

But there was another signature.

One I recognized immediately.

Ryan's.

My heart stopped.

"Why is your signature on this?""

Ryan looked at the document.

His face drained of color.

"I've never seen this agreement.""

I studied the signature.

It was identical to his.

Then I noticed the final paragraph.

The agreement stated that if Ryan's marriage ended before October 16, all future descendants would be excluded from the family voting trust unless independently acknowledged.

Someone had deliberately arranged our divorce before the deadline.

And the agreement had been signed months earlier.

Ryan slowly sat down.

"They planned this before I even knew Vanessa was coming back.""

I looked at him.

"Then your entire marriage decision was part of their plan.""

He didn't respond.

I picked up the document.

"Ryan, I need you to tell me something.""

He looked up.

"Anything.""

"Did you ever love Vanessa?""

His expression changed.

"Why are you asking me that now?""

"Because I need to know whether you destroyed our marriage willingly or whether someone manipulated you into doing it.""

He stared at me for a long moment.

Then he answered.

"I thought I loved the memory of her. But I never loved her the way I loved you.""

The words should have meant something.

Five years earlier, they might have changed everything.

Now they only hurt.

I looked away.

"That's not enough.""

"I know.""

My phone rang again.

This time, it was an unfamiliar number.

I answered cautiously.

"Hello?""

A man's voice spoke.

"Claire Whitmore?""

"Who is this?""

"My name is Richard Whitmore.""

Ryan immediately looked up.

I put the call on speaker.

Richard's voice was calm.

"Congratulations. I understand you've discovered the documents.""

Ryan stepped closer.

"Uncle Richard.""

"Ryan. It's been a long time.""

"What did you do?""

Richard chuckled.

"Everything I did was for this family.""

"You forged documents?""

"I protected the company.""

"You destroyed my marriage!""

"And look how successful you became afterward.""

Ryan's hands clenched.

Richard continued.

"Now, listen carefully. I have no interest in hurting the children. But if you acknowledge them publicly, the entire company structure will change.""

I stepped forward.

"They are not bargaining chips.""

Richard laughed.

"Claire, you should understand something. You received ten million dollars. You had your freedom. Why return now?""

I felt the old anger burning.

"Because I never agreed to sell my children.""

Silence.

Then Richard said something that made my blood run cold.

"Perhaps you should ask Ryan what his father intended to do if he ever discovered the truth.""

Ryan went pale.

"What does that mean?""

Richard ignored him.

"Meet me tomorrow morning. Come alone, Claire. I'll explain everything.""

The call ended.

Ryan immediately shook his head.

"You're not going anywhere near him.""

I looked at the letter from his mother.

Then at the forged agreement.

"He's right about one thing.""

Ryan frowned.

"What?""

"We haven't discovered the whole truth.""

May you like

I picked up my phone.

"And tomorrow, I'm going to find out who really wanted my children erased from the Whitmore family.""
