Chapter 3: The Woman Who Came Back
I hadn't seen Vanessa Sinclair in five years.
But I recognized her immediately.
Some women have a way of entering a room as if they've already decided they belong there.
Vanessa was one of them.
Her blond hair fell in perfect waves over her shoulders. Her cream-colored dress looked tailored specifically for her body. A diamond bracelet glittered around her wrist.
She was beautiful.
She was also the reason I had once sat alone in a hospital parking lot, crying over three ultrasound pictures.
Ryan stood beside her.
His expression was unreadable.
"Claire, we need to talk.""
I looked at Vanessa.
"Then you should have made an appointment.""
Vanessa's smile returned, although it didn't reach her eyes.
"Hello, Claire. It's been a long time.""
"Five years.""
"Yes. I heard you left New York.""
"I did.""
She glanced at my living room.
"Apparently, you've been busy.""
I didn't like the way she said it.
As if my children were some unexpected business development.
Ryan stepped forward.
"Can we come inside?""
"No.""
His eyebrows pulled together.
"Claire.""
"Ryan, I have three sleeping children and no interest in entertaining unexpected visitors.""
From the living room, Ethan's voice rang out.
"Mommy! Lily stole my dinosaur!""
Lily immediately shouted back.
"I didn't steal it! I rescued it!""
Alexander sighed.
"Both of you, stop shouting. The neighbors can hear you.""
Vanessa looked toward the sound.
Her expression changed again.
"Are they really...""
"Yes," Ryan interrupted.
He was staring at me.
"They're mine.""
It wasn't a question anymore.
I crossed my arms.
"You're making a very confident statement for someone who hasn't asked a single intelligent question.""
His jaw tightened.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
I stared at him.
Then I laughed once.
It wasn't a happy sound.
"Do you remember the day you handed me those divorce papers?""
Ryan didn't respond.
"Do you remember what you said?""
"Claire—"
"You told me Vanessa was back. You told me you owed her a chance. You told me you weren't asking for a divorce.""
Vanessa shifted uncomfortably.
"Ryan told me your marriage had been over for some time.""
I turned toward her.
"How convenient.""
She lifted her chin.
"I didn't know you were pregnant.""
"Neither did he.""
Ryan looked at me.
"Why?""
"Because I didn't tell you.""
"That isn't an explanation.""
"Then here's one. You were in such a hurry to return to the woman you loved that you couldn't even wait for me to finish speaking.""
His expression hardened.
"I would have wanted to know.""
I felt something cold move through my chest.
"Would you?""
"Of course.""
"Even if knowing meant you couldn't marry Vanessa?""
He said nothing.
And that silence told me more than any answer could have.
Vanessa placed a hand on his arm.
"Ryan, perhaps we should leave. This is clearly emotional for everyone.""
I looked at her fingers resting against his sleeve.
Five years ago, that hand had been the reason my marriage ended.
Now I found that I barely cared.
Ryan pulled his arm away.
"No. I'm not leaving without answers.""
I raised an eyebrow.
"You've already received one.""
"I want to know their names. Their birthdays. Their medical history. Everything.""
I laughed bitterly.
"You want five years of information in five minutes?""
"They're my children.""
"They're children who learned to walk without you. They had their first birthdays without you. They got sick, recovered, learned to ride bicycles, and started school without you.""
My voice cracked.
I hated that.
I hated that he could still make me emotional.
Ryan's eyes moved toward the living room.
"Claire, I can't change what happened.""
"No. But you can stop pretending it happened to you.""
He stared at me.
Behind him, Vanessa looked increasingly uncomfortable.
Then a small voice interrupted us.
"Mommy?""
Lily appeared in the hallway, holding her stuffed rabbit.
Her hair was messy, and one of her socks had slipped down.
"Who is there?""
I immediately softened.
"Go back to bed, sweetheart.""
She looked past me.
Then her eyes widened.
"Oh! It's the man from the airport.""
Ryan crouched.
"Hello, Lily.""
She studied him.
"Why are you here?""
Ryan glanced at me.
"Because I wanted to see you.""
Lily frowned.
"Why?""
He hesitated.
"Because you're very important to me.""
She considered that answer.
Then she looked at me.
"Mommy, is he our daddy?""
The hallway went silent.
Vanessa stopped breathing for a moment.
Ryan looked as though someone had struck him.
I closed my eyes.
I had wanted to tell my children in a peaceful place, at a time when they could ask questions without strangers listening.
But the truth had arrived at my door wearing a tailored suit.
I knelt beside Lily.
"Yes, sweetheart.""
She looked at Ryan.
Then back at me.
"Really?""
"Yes.""
Her little fingers tightened around the rabbit.
"Does he know us?""
I brushed her cheek.
"Not yet.""
Ryan lowered his head.
For the first time that evening, I saw genuine pain on his face.
Lily took a few steps toward him.
"Are you going to stay?""
He looked up.
"Would you like me to?""
She shrugged.
"Maybe. But you have to be nice to Ethan. He gets angry when people touch his toys.""
From the living room, Ethan shouted.
"I HEARD THAT!""
Alexander appeared behind him.
"Everyone heard that.""
Ryan almost smiled.
Almost.
Then Lily looked at Vanessa.
"Who's she?""
Vanessa recovered quickly.
"I'm Vanessa, sweetheart.""
Lily nodded politely.
"Hello, Vanessa.""
"Hello, darling.""
Lily glanced between her and Ryan.
"Are you his girlfriend?""
Vanessa's smile became fixed.
Ryan stood.
"That's enough for tonight.""
I agreed.
"Absolutely.""
I took Lily's hand.
Ryan looked at me.
"Tomorrow. I want to meet them properly.""
I shook my head.
"You don't get to decide that.""
"Claire, please.""
"Send your lawyer a request. We'll discuss reasonable arrangements.""
His expression darkened.
"Lawyers? You want to turn this into a legal battle?""
"No. I want to protect my children.""
Vanessa stepped closer to him.
"Ryan, we should go.""
He didn't move.
I looked directly at him.
"Good night.""
Then I closed the door.
For several seconds, I stood with my forehead against the wood.
My heart was beating too fast.
Behind me, Lily tugged at my sleeve.
"Mommy?""
I turned.
"Yes?""
"Is Daddy mad at you?""
I swallowed.
"No, sweetheart.""
"Then why do you look sad?""
I pulled her into my arms.
"Because some stories are complicated.""
She hugged my neck.
"Can we make pancakes tomorrow?""
I laughed softly.
"Of course.""
That night, after all three children were asleep, I sat alone in the living room.
My phone lit up.
A message from an unknown number.
This is Vanessa. I think we should talk privately.
I stared at it.
Another message appeared.
Ryan doesn't know everything about our relationship. There are things you should understand before you let him back into your children's lives.
My fingers went cold.
I typed a response.
I have no interest in discussing your relationship with Ryan.
Her reply arrived almost immediately.
You should. Especially because I was never the reason he divorced you.
I read it twice.
Then a third message appeared.
Ryan didn't tell you what happened three days before he gave you those papers, did he?
I sat upright.
Three days before the divorce?
I remembered that week.
Ryan had been unusually quiet.
He had canceled two dinners, taken several calls in his study, and spent an entire night away from home.
At the time, I'd assumed it was work.
Vanessa sent another message.
Ask him why he was so desperate to divorce you that day.
I stared at the screen.
Then I typed one question.
What are you talking about?
The reply came with a photograph.
It showed Ryan standing outside a private hospital, wearing the same dark coat he'd worn on the day of our divorce.
Beside him was Vanessa.
But that wasn't what made my blood run cold.
A woman stood between them.
A woman I had never seen before.
And in Ryan's arms was a newborn baby.
I zoomed in.
The date on the photograph was visible.
October 12.
Three days before Ryan had pushed divorce papers across our dining table.
Three days before I discovered I was carrying his triplets.
My phone slipped from my fingers and landed on the carpet.
Because suddenly, I wasn't wondering whether Ryan had known about my children.
May you like
I was wondering what other child he might have been hiding from me.
And why Vanessa had waited five years to tell me.
