Chapter 8: The Boardroom Betrayal

The Whitmore Global headquarters occupied the top thirty floors of a glass tower overlooking Park Avenue.

I hadn't entered the building in five years.

The receptionist recognized Ryan immediately.

"Good morning, Mr. Whitmore.""

He barely acknowledged her.

"Where is the board?""

"Executive conference room.""

"Has Daniel presented the documents?""

"He's waiting for you.""

Ryan turned toward me.

"Stay beside me.""

I raised an eyebrow.

"I've survived five years without your protection.""

"I know.""

He paused.

"But today, I would prefer not to make that mistake twice.""

I followed him into the elevator.

The doors opened on the thirty-second floor.

A row of executives stood outside the conference room.

Some recognized me.

Others whispered.

I heard my name.

I heard the word children.

And I heard someone say, "Is that really her?""

Ryan opened the door.

The conversation stopped.

Daniel Pierce stood at the head of the table.

He was older, with silver beginning to appear at his temples, but his confidence hadn't changed.

Beside him sat Vanessa.

She wore a black suit and a diamond necklace.

When she saw me, her smile disappeared.

Daniel adjusted his cufflinks.

"Ryan. Finally.""

Ryan walked to the head of the table.

"Explain why you moved this meeting.""

Daniel smiled.

"Because the shareholders deserve transparency.""

He gestured toward the large screen.

A photograph appeared.

It was the letter I had written five years earlier.

My handwriting.

My words.

My three ultrasound photographs.

I felt my chest tighten.

Daniel turned toward the board.

"Five years ago, Mr. Whitmore divorced his wife. Shortly afterward, three children were born. These children were concealed from the family and the company.""

I stood.

"They weren't concealed from the company. They were concealed from me.""

Daniel ignored me.

"Now, Mrs. Whitmore has returned with three children who may be entitled to a substantial portion of the family trust.""

Ryan's voice was cold.

"Don't refer to them as assets.""

Daniel smiled.

"Of course. They're children. But legal responsibilities remain.""

He displayed the second page.

The forged custody agreement.

A murmur passed around the room.

Daniel pointed toward my signature.

"According to this document, Claire voluntarily surrendered her parental rights in exchange for ten million dollars.""

I stared at him.

"That signature is forged.""

Daniel tilted his head.

"Are you sure?""

"Absolutely.""

"Then perhaps you can explain why the settlement payment matches the amount listed here.""

I looked around the room.

Several executives were studying me.

I could feel the old humiliation returning.

Five years ago, Ryan had believed a lie because someone had presented it on paper.

Now Daniel was trying to do the same thing again.

But this time, I wasn't alone.

I opened my briefcase.

"Before you question my signature, perhaps you should explain yours.""

I placed a document on the table.

It was the moving company receipt.

Daniel's face changed.

"What's that?""

"Proof that you collected my personal belongings three days after I left Ryan's apartment.""

A board member leaned forward.

"Mr. Pierce?""

Daniel recovered quickly.

"I was assisting with the relocation.""

"Without my permission," I replied.

I placed another document beside it.

"And this is an email you sent Vanessa on October 13. You wrote that the divorce was proceeding as planned and that the succession arrangement would remain under your supervision.""

Vanessa stood.

"That's completely out of context.""

I turned toward her.

"Then explain the context.""

She said nothing.

Ryan took the documents.

His eyes moved across the pages.

"Daniel, you told me Claire was leaking company information.""

"She was.""

"Where is the evidence?""

Daniel gestured toward the screen.

"The original records were provided to you.""

"Our cybersecurity department proved those records were fabricated.""

Daniel's smile disappeared.

Ryan continued.

"You also told me Vanessa had nothing to do with the forged emails.""

Vanessa's face tightened.

"Ryan, I never—"

"Don't.""

He turned toward her.

"Not one more lie.""

The room fell silent.

Daniel slammed his palm against the table.

"This is becoming personal.""

Ryan looked at him.

"It became personal when you stole my wife's letter and forged her signature.""

A board member spoke.

"Mr. Pierce, is the custody document authentic?""

Daniel straightened his jacket.

"The document was prepared by our legal department.""

"That's not what I asked.""

Daniel hesitated.

I opened my laptop.

"Then perhaps this will help.""

I connected it to the conference room display.

A series of digital records appeared.

"Five years ago, I was working with a digital marketing agency. I maintained an encrypted backup of my personal correspondence. After discovering the missing letter, my assistant recovered the original file.""

I clicked.

The original document appeared.

One page.

No custody agreement.

No surrender of parental rights.

Just my handwriting and three ultrasound photographs.

Then I displayed the metadata.

The second page had been created on a different computer.

Three years after the divorce.

A board member leaned forward.

"Three years later?""

I nodded.

"Someone manufactured the document long after my signature was supposedly given.""

Daniel's face had gone gray.

Ryan stared at the screen.

"Who created it?""

I clicked the final file.

The system administrator's report appeared.

The document had been generated using credentials assigned to Daniel Pierce.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then one of the directors stood.

"Mr. Pierce, I move that your access be suspended pending an independent investigation.""

Another director immediately supported the motion.

Daniel looked toward Ryan.

"You can't do this.""

Ryan didn't blink.

"Watch me.""

Two security officers entered.

Daniel pointed at me.

"She's manipulating you! You have no idea what she's capable of!""

Ryan stepped between us.

"Don't speak about her again.""

Vanessa grabbed Daniel's arm.

"Stop making this worse.""

He pulled away.

"You promised me!""

The room went completely still.

Ryan turned slowly.

"What did you just say?""

Vanessa's face drained of color.

Daniel realized his mistake.

But it was too late.

Ryan approached the table.

"What did Vanessa promise you, Daniel?""

Daniel said nothing.

Vanessa looked toward the door.

One of the security officers blocked her path.

Ryan's voice became dangerously quiet.

"Five years ago, you destroyed my marriage. You forged evidence. You stole private documents. And now you've tried to use my children to protect your position.""

He paused.

"Tell me why.""

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"Because your father was going to hand everything to your children. Forty-two percent of the company. Voting rights. Control of the family trust.""

Ryan stared at him.

"And?""

"And I built this company alongside you! I wasn't going to spend my life watching three children inherit everything while I received nothing!""

I looked at him.

"Those children were babies.""

Daniel pointed toward me.

"And she knew exactly what she was doing!""

Ryan moved forward.

"Enough.""

Then a board member interrupted.

"There's something else.""

He held up a separate file.

"We received an anonymous submission this morning. It concerns the original DNA test involving Olivia Grant's son.""

Ryan frowned.

"What about it?""

The board member looked uncomfortable.

"The test was authentic. But the accompanying report suggests someone attempted to alter a second DNA record involving Mr. Whitmore.""

I felt my heart stop.

Ryan slowly turned.

"What second record?""

The director looked down at the page.

"One dated October 14, five years ago.""

I gripped the edge of the table.

October 14.

The day before Ryan divorced me.

The director continued.

"It appears a genetic sample was submitted under Mr. Whitmore's name. The laboratory report indicates a match with an unborn child.""

Ryan stared at him.

"Whose child?""

The director swallowed.

"One of the three children now living with Claire.""

The room tilted.

Ryan looked at me.

I looked back.

Then Daniel began laughing.

Not loudly.

Not triumphantly.

Just enough to make everyone uncomfortable.

"Well," he said, "I suppose the truth is finally coming out.""

Ryan grabbed the report.

And the moment he read the final paragraph, his expression changed completely.

Because the report didn't simply confirm that he was the father.

May you like

It suggested that someone had known about the triplets before either of us had.

And that person had deliberately hidden the result.
