Chapter 6: The Secret in the Whitmore Trust

Ryan was waiting outside the hotel when I returned.

Two security officers stood near the entrance.

He was speaking to one of them when I approached.

The moment he saw me, he dismissed the man with a gesture.

"Where were you?""

"Meeting Olivia.""

His expression changed.

"You met her?""

"Yes.""

"What did she tell you?""

"That Vanessa lied about everything.""

Ryan closed his eyes briefly.

"I told you not to trust her.""

"She wasn't the one who lied to me five years ago.""

He looked at me.

I continued before he could interrupt.

"She told me about the documents Vanessa used against me. She told me about Daniel Pierce. She told me about the DNA test.""

Ryan's face hardened.

"Daniel.""

"Yes.""

He looked toward the hotel entrance.

"We need to get inside.""

"Why?""

"Because I want to see the children.""

I folded my arms.

"You don't get to walk into their lives whenever you feel like it.""

"I'm not asking to become their father overnight.""

"Then what are you asking?""

He looked directly at me.

"An opportunity to protect them.""

I laughed bitterly.

"Where was that concern five years ago?""

He didn't answer.

For a moment, the billionaire who had built an empire looked like a man who had run out of arguments.

Then he spoke quietly.

"I made a mistake.""

I stared at him.

"That's what you call it?""

"No.""

His eyes met mine.

"I called it a mistake for five years because I couldn't admit what it really was.""

"And what was it?""

"Fear.""

I blinked.

Ryan looked away.

"I believed Vanessa. I believed the documents she showed me. I believed you had betrayed me.""

"You didn't even ask me.""

"I know.""

"You didn't give me a chance to explain.""

"I know.""

"You didn't even let me finish a sentence.""

His jaw tightened.

"I know, Claire.""

I wanted to slap him.

Instead, I looked toward the elevator.

"Come upstairs. But you're not going near the children until I say so.""

He nodded.

Inside the suite, Sophie was helping the children with their dinner.

Alexander noticed Ryan first.

"Mister Gray Eyes!""

Ryan stopped.

Ethan looked up from his plate.

"Why is he here?""

Ryan crouched slightly.

"Hello, Ethan.""

Ethan studied him.

"Do you like pizza?""

Ryan blinked.

"I do.""

"Then you're probably okay.""

Alexander rolled his eyes.

"That's not how you judge people.""

Lily appeared carrying a glass of water.

"Are you staying for dinner?""

Ryan glanced at me.

I hesitated.

Then I nodded.

"Only for a little while.""

Lily immediately pulled out a chair.

"Sit here.""

Ryan sat.

For the next fifteen minutes, he experienced something no business negotiation had ever prepared him for.

Three five-year-olds asking questions simultaneously.

"Do you have a swimming pool?"" Ethan asked.

"Yes.""

"Can I see it?""

"Maybe.""

"Do you have a dinosaur?""

Ryan looked confused.

"A dinosaur?""

"A real one," Ethan clarified.

"No.""

"Then why are you rich?""

Alexander sighed.

"That makes no sense.""

Lily pushed a piece of pizza toward Ryan.

"You can have mine. I don't like the crust.""

Ryan looked at the slice.

Then at her.

"Thank you.""

He took a bite.

And I saw something change in his face.

It was the smallest thing.

A smile.

Not the controlled expression he used in boardrooms.

A real one.

For a moment, I remembered the man I had once loved.

Then my phone rang.

Sophie.

I stepped into the adjoining room.

"Claire, I found something.""

"What?""

"I searched the public corporate filings connected to Whitmore Global. There's a trust agreement that was amended five years ago.""

My stomach tightened.

"By whom?""

"Ryan's father. Three days before your divorce.""

I froze.

"What does it say?""

"The agreement transfers a controlling portion of the family voting shares to Ryan's direct descendants if he has children.""

I looked toward the dining table.

Ryan was listening to Ethan explain why dinosaurs would be better company executives than humans.

"How many shares?""

"Forty-two percent.""

I closed my eyes.

"Forty-two?""

"Yes. And there's a clause that gives the children voting rights through an independent trustee until they're eighteen.""

I stared at the wall.

"Why wasn't I told?""

"Because the amendment was sealed under a private family arrangement.""

I lowered my voice.

"Sophie, send me everything.""

"I already have.""

When I returned to the living room, Ryan was helping Lily wipe pizza sauce from her dress.

He looked up.

"What happened?""

I held up my phone.

"Your family trust.""

His expression changed immediately.

"Who told you?""

"My assistant.""

He placed the napkin down.

"Claire, that agreement is complicated.""

"Explain it.""

Ryan looked at the children.

Then he asked Sophie to take them into the bedroom for dessert.

Once we were alone, he opened his briefcase.

He removed a thick folder.

"This was signed by my father shortly before he died.""

I opened it.

The document was dated October 12.

Five years ago.

The same date as the hospital photograph.

Ryan continued.

"My father believed Whitmore Global needed a succession plan. He wanted the company to remain under direct family control.""

"And the children?""

"If I had biological children, they would inherit the voting shares.""

I looked at him.

"Why did you never mention this to me?""

"Because I didn't know about the final amendment until after the divorce.""

I frowned.

"That's convenient.""

He didn't react.

"My father had his own lawyers. He didn't tell me everything he was planning.""

I scanned the document.

Then I noticed a handwritten note attached to the final page.

It was signed by Ryan's father.

To my son: A family is more than a name. Never allow anyone to convince you that the people who love you are obstacles to your success.

I looked up.

"Your father knew?""

Ryan shook his head.

"Not about the triplets. He died before I discovered what Vanessa had done.""

I returned to the document.

There was another name.

Daniel Pierce.

Listed as a temporary financial administrator.

I looked at Ryan.

"Why is Daniel involved in this?""

Ryan's expression darkened.

"Because he was appointed to oversee the trust until the children could be identified.""

"Identified?""

"Yes.""

"Then he knew?""

Ryan nodded slowly.

"Apparently.""

I felt sick.

For five years, someone had known my children existed.

Someone had known they were entitled to a substantial inheritance.

And nobody had told me.

I turned another page.

There was a section about the biological descendants of Ryan Whitmore.

Three names had been added to the preliminary beneficiary file.

Alexander.

Ethan.

Lily.

My throat tightened.

Ryan watched me carefully.

"I only learned about their existence yesterday.""

I looked at him.

"Then why does Daniel have their names?""

He didn't answer.

Instead, he picked up another document.

"This is the original trust notification.""

The signature at the bottom was not Ryan's.

It belonged to Daniel Pierce.

Beside it was a date.

October 15.

The day Ryan divorced me.

I stared at the page.

"Daniel knew about the triplets?""

Ryan shook his head.

"No. He knew the trust would become active if I had biological children. He didn't know you were pregnant.""

"Then why did he sign this?""

Ryan looked at me.

"Because someone told him you were going to have children.""

I felt my blood run cold.

"Who?""

Ryan's phone rang.

He checked the screen.

Daniel Pierce.

Ryan answered on speaker.

"Daniel.""

A man's voice came through.

"Ryan. I heard about your reunion with Claire.""

Ryan's expression hardened.

"How did you hear?""

A short laugh.

"New York is a small city.""

I stepped closer to the table.

Ryan's voice became colder.

"What do you want?""

"To remind you that the trust is not as simple as you think.""

"Explain.""

"Your children are now potential beneficiaries. That creates a significant problem.""

Ryan's eyes narrowed.

"They're my children.""

"Biologically, yes. Legally, the situation is more complicated.""

I grabbed the edge of the table.

"What are you talking about?""

Daniel continued.

"The trust requires proof of paternity and independent confirmation that the children were not concealed for financial purposes.""

Ryan stood.

"Be careful, Daniel.""

"Or what? You'll sue me?""

A brief silence followed.

Then Daniel said something that made my entire body go cold.

"Ryan, before you start threatening people, perhaps you should ask Claire why she never told you she was pregnant.""

I stared at the phone.

Ryan's face turned white.

"What's that supposed to mean?""

Daniel laughed softly.

"Ask her about the letter.""

Ryan slowly turned toward me.

"What letter?""

I couldn't breathe.

Because I knew exactly which letter Daniel was talking about.

Five years ago, before I left New York, I had written Ryan a letter.

I had never sent it.

Or at least, I had never believed I had.

It contained the ultrasound photographs.

And one sentence I had written with shaking hands:

Ryan, you're going to be a father to three children.

I had placed it inside the envelope with my personal belongings.

An envelope that disappeared when I moved out of our apartment.

Ryan stared at me.

"Claire?""

I couldn't answer.

Then Daniel's voice came through the phone again.

"There's something else you should know.""

Ryan grabbed the phone.

"What?""

"The original letter is in my possession.""

A pause.

"And tomorrow morning, I'm presenting it to the Whitmore board.""

The call disconnected.

Ryan stood motionless.

I looked at him.

Five years ago, I had walked away believing my silence had protected my children.

Now someone had taken that silence and turned it into a weapon.

And tomorrow, the entire Whitmore family would learn that the billionaire's three secret children had been hidden from him.

But the most frightening part wasn't the board meeting.

It was the final message that appeared on my phone moments later.

An unknown number.

If you want to keep your children, Claire, make sure Ryan never sees the second page of that letter.

I stared at the screen.

May you like

Because I remembered writing only one page.

So what exactly was on the second one?
