Chapter 9: The Sister Who Finally Told the Truth

The storage facility was nearly deserted when Daniel's car pulled through the entrance.

Maya sat in the passenger seat, clutching her grandmother's journal.

Michael drove while Daniel spoke to the security manager.

"Unit 214," Daniel said.

"We need to know who accessed it tonight.""

The manager checked the electronic records.

"Two people entered with an access code about forty minutes ago.""

"Names?""

"One is registered to Brianna Carter's company.""

Maya's heart sank.

"Did she take the boxes?""

The manager shook his head.

"The cameras show a second vehicle. A black SUV. The driver loaded several large containers before leaving.""

Daniel leaned closer.

"Can you identify the driver?""

The manager turned the monitor.

The footage was grainy, but the man's face was visible when he entered the building.

Michael stared at the screen.

"Richard Hale.""

Daniel nodded.

"So the buyer was also the person removing the archive.""

Maya looked at the empty storage unit.

"Can we get it back?""

"We'll do everything we can.""

Daniel turned toward the manager.

"Please preserve the footage and provide copies to the authorities.""

Then he called Brianna.

She answered immediately.

"Mr. Brooks?""

"Where are you?""

"At home.""

"Did you send me the photograph?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

Brianna's voice trembled.

"Because I don't want Mom to destroy everything.""

Daniel looked toward Maya.

"Can you come to my office tomorrow morning?""

"Yes.""

"And Brianna?""

"Yes?""

"Don't contact Richard Hale or your mother about this conversation.""

After the call ended, Maya looked at her father.

"Do you think Brianna is telling the truth?""

Michael considered the question.

"I think she's finally frightened enough to understand what she's been part of.""

Maya looked down.

"She still took my dress.""

"I know.""

"She still lied about making it.""

"I know that too.""

He placed a hand on her shoulder.

"Forgiving someone doesn't mean pretending they didn't hurt you, Maya.""

She nodded.

The next morning, Brianna arrived at Daniel's office carrying a large envelope.

She looked nothing like the confident young woman who had worn the turquoise gown at the gala.

Her hair was tied loosely, her eyes were swollen, and she wore an ordinary sweatshirt.

Maya was already sitting beside Michael.

Brianna stopped when she saw her sister.

"Hi.""

Maya didn't answer.

Brianna lowered her eyes and sat opposite them.

Daniel opened the envelope.

Inside were bank statements, email printouts, and copies of several contracts.

"Where did you get these?""

"Mom's home office.""

Daniel examined the first document.

"These are licensing agreements.""

Brianna nodded.

"Mom told me she was selling old fashion designs to a private company. She said Grandma had approved everything before she died.""

"Did you believe her?""

"At first.""

Daniel turned another page.

"Why did you create Carter Heritage Holdings?""

Brianna looked uncomfortable.

"Mom told me it was for a family investment project. She said it would make me independent.""

"Did you know the company was being used to purchase assets belonging to the trust?""

Brianna shook her head.

"Not at first. She asked me to sign several forms. She said they were routine documents.""

Daniel placed one of the papers in front of her.

"This agreement identifies your company as the purchaser of Evelyn Carter Designs' historical archive.""

Brianna looked at it.

"I didn't know what I was buying.""

"Did you receive payment?""

She hesitated.

Then she nodded.

"Twenty-five thousand dollars.""

Maya stared at her.

"You took money for Grandma's things?""

Brianna's eyes filled.

"I didn't know they were stolen.""

"But you knew the money came from somewhere.""

"I thought it was an investment.""

Maya pushed her chair back.

"Why does everyone in this family keep pretending not to know what they're doing?""

Brianna began crying.

"I know. I know I was wrong.""

Maya looked away.

Daniel placed another document on the table.

"This is important. Your company received a payment from Richard Hale before the archive was transferred.""

Brianna nodded.

"Mom said it was a consulting fee.""

"Do you have the original email?""

"Yes.""

She removed a printed page.

Daniel read it carefully.

Then his expression changed.

"What is it?"" Michael asked.

Daniel turned the paper around.

The email had been sent from Vanessa's personal account to Richard Hale.

The child has signed nothing, but I have prepared the authorization. Michael's identity documents are available. Once the archive is transferred, the remaining property can be sold.

Below it was another sentence.

The girls don't need to know what happens to the company.

Maya felt sick.

"She planned everything.""

Daniel nodded.

"And this email establishes that the transaction was organized before the alleged authorization was submitted.""

Brianna covered her face.

"I didn't see that message before.""

Maya looked at her sister.

"Why did you send everything to Daniel?""

Brianna lowered her hands.

"Because last night, Mom called me and told me to destroy the remaining documents.""

"Did you?""

"No.""

"Why?""

Brianna looked at Maya for a long moment.

"Because I remembered Grandma.""

She took a breath.

"When we were little, she used to sit with us in the garden and tell us that family wasn't about who had the biggest bedroom or the nicest clothes. She said family was supposed to protect each other.""

Maya's eyes softened slightly.

Brianna continued.

"I was jealous of you. I thought Grandma loved you more because you were talented. I thought if I could wear your dress and make everyone admire me, maybe I would finally feel important.""

She looked at the turquoise gown, which she had brought folded inside a garment bag.

"I was wrong.""

Brianna placed the dress on the table.

"I'm sorry.""

Maya looked at it.

The crystal butterflies were still there.

One wing was slightly loose, but the fabric remained beautiful.

"I made this for the showcase," Maya said quietly.

"I know.""

"You knew how much it meant to me.""

Brianna nodded.

"I did.""

Maya didn't reach for her sister's hand.

Not yet.

But she didn't tell her to leave either.

Daniel stood and walked toward the window.

"There is enough evidence here to challenge the archive transfer. However, we still need to locate the original collection.""

Brianna wiped her cheeks.

"I know where Richard keeps his private collection.""

Everyone turned toward her.

"What?"" Daniel asked.

"His company has a warehouse outside the city. Mom took me there once. She showed me several boxes and said they were going to be part of a new luxury collection.""

"Can you identify the location?""

Brianna nodded.

"I have the address.""

Daniel immediately wrote it down.

Then he called the trustee and the firm's investigators.

Michael looked at his daughters.

For the first time in years, they were sitting in the same room without Vanessa between them.

He reached for Maya's hand.

"Your grandmother would be proud of you.""

Maya looked at the dress.

"I just want my designs back.""

Two hours later, Daniel received confirmation.

The investigators had located the warehouse.

The original archive was there.

But Richard Hale had already arranged for several boxes to be transported to an international shipping company.

They needed to act quickly.

Daniel looked at Maya.

"We may have found the collection. But there's something you should know.""

"What?""

"The warehouse also contains several garments made from Evelyn's unpublished designs.""

Maya nodded.

"Okay.""

"One of them is scheduled to appear in a major fashion exhibition next week.""

Daniel showed her a photograph.

It was a breathtaking ivory wedding gown with hundreds of hand-embroidered flowers.

Maya recognized the design.

She had seen it in her grandmother's journal.

But something was wrong.

The photograph showed a label sewn inside the dress.

It read:

*RICHARD HALE — ORIGINAL DESIGNER.*

Maya stared at it.

"He's claiming Grandma's work as his own?""

Daniel nodded.

"And if the exhibition opens without anyone challenging that claim, the damage to your grandmother's legacy could be enormous.""

Michael stood.

"Then we stop him.""

Daniel picked up his phone.

"Tomorrow morning, we're going to that warehouse.""

Brianna rose too.

"I'm coming.""

Maya looked at her sister.

"Why?""

Brianna swallowed.

"Because I helped him take Grandma's work. And I want to help bring it home.""

Maya studied her for a moment.

Then she picked up the turquoise dress.

"Fine.""

She carefully folded it into the garment bag.

"But this time, nobody gets to take something that isn't theirs.""

That night, Maya returned to the sewing studio.

She placed the turquoise gown on the mannequin.

The butterflies caught the light.

She threaded a needle and began repairing the loose wing.

Her grandmother's words returned to her.

Never let anyone convince you that your hands were made for anything less than creating something extraordinary.

Maya smiled.

Tomorrow, she would fight for her grandmother's legacy.

But she had no idea that the greatest revelation was still waiting inside Richard Hale's warehouse.

Because when Daniel finally uncovered the original archive, he would discover one final document Evelyn had hidden among her most treasured designs.

A document that didn't simply expose Vanessa's betrayal.

It revealed who had actually been responsible for building the company in the first place.

May you like

And the name written at the top wasn't Evelyn Carter.

It was Vanessa Carter.
