Chapter 3: The Signature They Needed

Maya stared at the papers.

There were six pages.

Her name appeared several times, along with her grandmother's name and the address of the old studio.

At the bottom of the final page was a blank signature line.

"Why do I have to sign this?"" Maya asked.

Vanessa placed a pen on the kitchen counter.

"Because your grandmother left some things unfinished, and we need to organize the paperwork.""

"Mr. Brooks said I shouldn't sign anything.""

Vanessa's expression changed instantly.

"Who?""

Maya realized her mistake.

"Nobody.""

"Don't lie to me.""

Vanessa grabbed the papers.

"Have you been talking to Daniel Brooks?""

Maya remained silent.

Vanessa let out a bitter laugh.

"I should have known. That man has been interfering in this family for years.""

"He was Grandma's lawyer.""

"He was her business attorney. That doesn't give him the right to interfere with my children.""

Maya looked at the documents again.

"Why does it say I'm surrendering my property rights?""

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

"Because you don't understand legal language.""

"Then explain it.""

For several seconds, Vanessa stared at her daughter as if she had never heard her speak that way before.

Then she pulled out a chair.

"Sit down.""

Maya didn't move.

Vanessa tapped the papers.

"Your grandmother made complicated arrangements before she died. The studio, the property, and some business accounts were left in a trust. Unfortunately, there are certain restrictions that make it difficult for me to manage everything.""

"What restrictions?""

"You're the beneficiary.""

Maya blinked.

"Me?""

"Yes. But you're a child. You cannot own or manage a business.""

"So why do I have to give it up?""

"Because I am your mother, and I am responsible for making decisions until you're an adult.""

Maya looked at the signature line.

"Then why does the paper say I'm giving everything away?""

Vanessa's face hardened.

"Because you're making this unnecessarily difficult.""

At that moment, Brianna entered the kitchen.

She was wearing an expensive cream-colored outfit and carrying a shopping bag from a luxury department store.

"What's going on?""

Vanessa pointed toward Maya.

"Your sister is refusing to cooperate.""

Brianna dropped her bag onto the counter.

"Oh my God. Again?""

She picked up the papers.

"What's this?""

"Nothing you need to worry about," Vanessa replied.

Brianna scanned the first page.

Then she laughed.

"Mom, why are you even bothering? Just make her sign it.""

Maya looked at her sister.

"Do you know what these papers are?""

"Not really.""

"Then why do you want me to sign them?""

Brianna rolled her eyes.

"Because you're twelve, Maya. What are you going to do with a building? Open a little sewing shop?""

"It's Grandma's studio.""

"And Grandma is gone.""

The sentence landed like a stone.

Maya's eyes burned.

Brianna continued.

"Look, Mom has real responsibilities. You should stop making everything about yourself.""

Vanessa nodded approvingly.

"Exactly.""

Maya slowly pushed the papers away.

"I'm not signing.""

Vanessa's hand slammed against the counter.

"You're going to regret this attitude.""

Brianna grabbed her shopping bag.

"Can we finish this? I have lunch with friends.""

Vanessa pointed at Maya.

"Go upstairs. I'll deal with you later.""

Maya obeyed.

But this time, she didn't go to her bedroom.

She slipped into the hallway, retrieved the old mobile phone, and sent Daniel a message from the number he had called back.

They want me to sign something giving up Grandma's property. Please help me.

His reply arrived less than a minute later.

Do not sign. I am coming tomorrow at ten. Bring every document you can find.

Maya read the message three times.

For the first time since her grandmother died, she felt that she wasn't completely alone.

The following morning, a black sedan pulled up outside the Carter house.

At exactly ten o'clock, the doorbell rang.

Vanessa opened the door.

A tall silver-haired man stood outside in a charcoal suit, holding a brown leather briefcase.

"Good morning, Vanessa.""

Her smile disappeared.

"Daniel.""

"I believe we need to talk.""

"This isn't a good time.""

Daniel glanced at his watch.

"Your daughter and I agreed on ten o'clock. I'm right on time.""

Vanessa stepped into the doorway, blocking his entrance.

"I don't know what Maya told you, but this is a private family matter.""

"Actually, it concerns the estate of Evelyn Carter. That makes it a legal matter.""

Vanessa's fingers tightened around the door.

Daniel continued calmly.

"I have the original trust documents, and I need to speak with the beneficiary.""

Vanessa laughed nervously.

"Maya is a minor. She cannot make decisions.""

"Correct. Which is precisely why I am here.""

He held out a business card.

"Please.""

Vanessa hesitated before allowing him inside.

Maya was waiting at the bottom of the stairs.

When she saw Daniel, her eyes widened.

"Mr. Brooks!""

He smiled warmly.

"Hello, little butterfly.""

Vanessa looked between them.

"Don't call her that.""

Daniel ignored the comment.

He placed his briefcase on the dining table and opened it.

Inside were several folders, official documents, and an old photograph.

Maya stepped closer.

The photograph showed her grandmother standing outside a beautiful building with a large glass storefront.

Behind her, a sign read:

*EVELYN CARTER DESIGNS.*

Maya had never seen the building before.

"Is that Grandma's company?""

Daniel nodded.

"She started with one sewing machine and a small rented room. Twenty-five years later, she had built a respected fashion house with several retail locations and an international client list.""

Maya stared at the photograph.

"She never told me.""

"She wanted you to enjoy being a child. But she also recognized something special in you.""

Daniel opened another folder.

Inside was a document bearing her grandmother's signature.

"Six months before her death, Evelyn created a family trust. She placed the studio, the company shares, and the commercial property under its protection.""

Vanessa folded her arms.

"And as her daughter, I am the natural guardian. I should have control.""

Daniel looked directly at her.

"You're the guardian of Maya's personal affairs. You are not the owner of the trust assets.""

Vanessa's face turned pale.

"What are you talking about?""

"Your mother appointed an independent trustee. You were specifically excluded from financial control.""

Silence filled the dining room.

Maya looked at Daniel.

"Why?""

He turned a page.

"Because Evelyn had concerns about how certain family assets were being handled.""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"That's ridiculous.""

Daniel calmly removed another document.

"Your mother also left a letter explaining her decision.""

He placed it on the table.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Maya recognized it immediately.

Grandmother Evelyn.

Daniel continued.

"She wanted Maya to inherit the business when she became an adult. Until then, the company would be protected by an independent board, and Maya would have access to educational opportunities funded by the trust.""

Maya's eyes filled.

"She remembered my dream.""

"She did more than remember it.""

Daniel opened the final folder.

"She arranged for a professional designer to evaluate Maya's work when the time came. If her designs demonstrated the talent Evelyn believed she possessed, the trust would sponsor her training.""

Maya looked down at her hands.

Her grandmother had believed in her.

Even after she was gone.

Then Daniel's expression became serious.

"There is one more issue.""

Vanessa stiffened.

"What issue?""

Daniel placed the papers Maya had been asked to sign beside the original trust agreement.

"I reviewed this document yesterday.""

He turned it toward Vanessa.

"This is not a routine family form. It is an attempt to transfer assets that legally belong to the trust.""

Vanessa's lips parted.

Daniel looked at her.

"And if Maya had signed it, the consequences could have been serious.""

Maya stared at her mother.

"Why did you tell me it was just paperwork?""

Vanessa didn't answer.

Daniel closed the folder.

"I would also like to know why several pieces of company property have recently been listed for sale.""

Vanessa's face lost all color.

Maya looked confused.

"What pieces?""

Daniel removed a printed document.

At the top was a real estate listing.

It showed the building from her grandmother's photograph.

The building that housed Evelyn Carter Designs.

And beneath the photograph was the name of the person attempting to sell it.

*Vanessa Carter.*

Maya slowly turned toward her mother.

"Mom?""

Vanessa grabbed the document.

"That's not what it looks like!""

Daniel stood.

"Then perhaps you can explain why you've been trying to sell a building you don't own.""

Nobody spoke.

Then Brianna appeared at the dining-room entrance, holding her phone.

She had heard everything.

"Mom," she whispered.

Vanessa turned sharply.

"Go upstairs, Brianna.""

But Brianna wasn't looking at her mother anymore.

She was staring at the real estate listing.

Then she looked at Daniel.

"Wait. If Maya owns Grandma's company...""

Her voice trembled.

"Does that mean the money we've been spending came from her inheritance?""

Daniel slowly closed his briefcase.

May you like

"That's exactly what we're going to investigate.""

And for the first time, Maya realized that the stolen dress might have been the smallest thing her family had taken from her.
