Chapter 4: The Price of Betrayal
"That's exactly what we're going to investigate.""
Daniel Brooks's words hung in the dining room.
Vanessa stood beside the table, gripping the real estate listing so tightly that the paper began to wrinkle. Brianna remained frozen near the doorway, her expensive handbag hanging from one shoulder.
Maya looked between them.
For the first time, she was beginning to understand that her grandmother had left her something much bigger than a sewing studio.
And her mother had been trying to take it.
"You're making a terrible mistake, Daniel," Vanessa said.
The lawyer calmly adjusted his glasses.
"Then you should have no trouble explaining the documents.""
Vanessa threw the listing onto the table.
"I was managing Evelyn's affairs after she died. Someone had to handle the bills, the property, and the business. I have spent years keeping this family together.""
Daniel opened another folder.
"Managing household expenses is not the same as having authority to sell trust property.""
"Your paperwork is outdated.""
"The trust was reviewed and amended shortly before Evelyn's death. I have the signed originals.""
Vanessa's expression hardened.
Maya quietly pulled a chair away from the table.
"Mr. Brooks, does this mean Mom can't sell Grandma's building?""
"Correct. Not without the required authorization.""
"Then why was she trying?""
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
"That is a question I believe your mother should answer.""
Vanessa turned toward Maya.
"Don't look at me like that. You have no idea how complicated things have been.""
Maya lowered her eyes.
"I just wanted to enter a fashion competition.""
Brianna let out an impatient sigh.
"Can we stop acting like Mom committed some terrible crime? She was trying to make decisions for the family.""
Daniel turned toward her.
"Miss Carter, do you know how much money has been withdrawn from the company's accounts over the past eighteen months?""
Brianna frowned.
"Why would I know that?""
"Perhaps because several payments were made directly toward expenses associated with your lifestyle.""
Brianna's face changed.
"Excuse me?""
Daniel placed three bank statements on the table.
"Luxury shopping, travel accommodations, a vehicle lease, and several payments to a private event planner.""
Vanessa immediately reached for the documents.
"Those were legitimate business expenses.""
"Which business purpose required a payment of eighteen thousand dollars to a luxury resort?""
Vanessa said nothing.
Brianna stared at the statement.
"Mom, you told me that money came from your investment account.""
"It did.""
Daniel shook his head.
"No. It came from an account belonging to Evelyn Carter Designs.""
Brianna slowly lowered her handbag.
Maya looked at her sister.
"Did you know?""
"Of course not!""
"But you knew Mom was using Grandma's money?""
Brianna's cheeks flushed.
"I didn't know whose money it was!""
Daniel gathered the documents.
"I am not making any accusations without completing the financial review. However, I have already requested that the trustee place temporary restrictions on certain company transactions.""
Vanessa stepped forward.
"You cannot do that without my permission.""
"I don't need your permission.""
The lawyer closed his briefcase.
"I do, however, need to speak with Maya privately.""
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"She's twelve. She doesn't understand any of this.""
Daniel looked at Maya.
"She understands more than you think.""
Twenty minutes later, Maya sat across from Daniel in the old sewing studio.
He had brought several photographs of her grandmother's fashion house.
There were pictures of Evelyn standing beside famous designers, employees, and models wearing her creations.
Maya examined each photograph carefully.
"Grandma really made all these dresses?""
"Every one of the early collections began with her sketches.""
"Was she famous?""
"Not in the way celebrities are famous. But in the fashion industry, she was respected. Her work was known for its intricate embroidery and unusual use of color.""
Maya touched one photograph.
It showed Evelyn holding a turquoise dress covered in delicate butterflies.
Maya's breath caught.
"That's the same kind of dress I made.""
Daniel smiled.
"Your grandmother designed that collection when she was younger. She used to say butterflies represented women who refused to remain trapped in places where they couldn't grow.""
Maya stared at the photograph.
"Why didn't she tell me about the company?""
"She wanted you to discover your own talent without feeling obligated to follow her footsteps.""
He opened a smaller folder.
"There's something else.""
Inside was a letter addressed to Maya.
Unlike the previous note, this one had been sealed.
Daniel handed it to her.
"Your grandmother asked me to give you this when you were old enough to understand what she was trying to protect.""
Maya carefully opened it.
My little butterfly,
If this letter has reached you, then I hope you are still creating.
I have watched you draw dresses on napkins, old newspapers, and even the back of grocery receipts. I have seen the way your eyes light up when you discover a new fabric.
Never confuse being loved with being controlled.
Never allow someone to convince you that your dreams are too small to matter.
I built a company because I wanted to create beautiful things. But my greatest achievement was discovering that someone in our family might continue that dream.
You don't owe me a career. You don't owe anyone success.
You only owe yourself the chance to become who you were meant to be.
All my love,
Grandma.
Maya pressed the letter against her chest.
A tear slipped down her cheek.
Daniel waited patiently.
Finally, she whispered, "I wish she were here.""
"So do I, Maya.""
He handed her a tissue.
"There's another matter we need to discuss. Your mother has been attempting to sell the flagship property. The trustee will investigate every transaction. But until that review is complete, I want you to stay away from signing documents or making financial decisions.""
Maya nodded.
Then she asked the question that had been bothering her.
"Can Mom still make me leave the studio?""
Daniel paused.
"Not permanently. The trust specifically protects your access to the creative space, provided it remains safe and properly maintained.""
Maya looked around the room.
For the first time, it felt like the room belonged to her again.
That evening, Vanessa waited in the kitchen.
The moment Maya entered, she placed a glass of water on the counter.
"Sit down.""
Maya hesitated.
"Mom, I'm tired.""
"I didn't ask whether you were tired.""
Maya sat.
Vanessa leaned forward.
"You need to understand something. Daniel Brooks is not your family.""
"He was Grandma's lawyer.""
"He is a businessman who wants control over your inheritance.""
"Grandma chose him.""
Vanessa's eyes flashed.
"Your grandmother made plenty of mistakes.""
Maya looked at her mother.
"Did she make a mistake choosing me?""
For a moment, Vanessa seemed unable to respond.
Then she stood.
"Go to your room.""
Maya rose.
As she reached the doorway, Vanessa spoke again.
"And Maya?""
She turned.
"Tomorrow, someone will come to inspect the studio. Don't touch anything.""
"Why?""
Vanessa picked up her phone.
"Because I have already made other arrangements.""
Maya's stomach tightened.
"What arrangements?""
May you like
Vanessa looked directly at her.
"I'm getting rid of the studio.""
