Chapter 9: The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Not Rachel.

Not Claire.

Not me.

The house felt frozen around us.

My phone was still in my hand.

The call had ended.

But the voice remained.

*I’m the reason Elijah was never supposed to be yours.*

I looked at Claire.

“He’s alive?””

She didn’t answer.

“Claire.””

Her eyes were fixed on the drawing in my hand.

On the tall figure standing behind Elijah.

Finally, she whispered:

“I don’t know.””

That answer made me angry.

Not because it was wrong.

Because it was impossible.

“You don’t know if Elijah’s father is alive?””

Claire looked at me.

“I was told he was dead.””

“By who?””

Her expression changed.

And I already knew.

“Thomas.””

The name filled the room with silence.

I walked downstairs slowly.

My mind was moving faster than my body.

Thomas had lied.

Rachel had lied.

Claire had lied.

Everyone had a version of the truth.

But my son was missing.

That was the only thing that mattered.

“Where would they take him?”” I asked.

Nobody answered.

I turned.

“Where would they take my son?””

Rachel wiped her face.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“I don’t care about the past right now.””

I pointed toward the empty hallway.

“I need him back.””

Claire nodded.

“You’re right.””

She walked toward the table.

“The man who called you…”

“Ethan?””

She nodded slowly.

“He would never hurt Elijah.””

I stared at her.

“You just said he was dead.””

“I know.””

“Then how can you be sure?””

Claire looked at me.

“Because Ethan loved him.””

The way she said it was different.

No fear.

No doubt.

Just memory.

“Tell me about him.””

Claire sat down.

“Ethan was the only person who believed I could be a good mother.””

I listened.

“He was there when Elijah was born.””

“Why wasn’t he on the paperwork?””

Claire looked away.

“Because Thomas made sure he wasn’t.””

My jaw tightened.

“Why?””

“I don’t know.””

“That’s not good enough.””

“I know.””

She looked at me.

“But Ethan found out.””

“Found out what?””

“That Thomas was changing documents.””

The room went quiet.

“Changing them how?””

Claire swallowed.

“Making it look like Ethan wasn’t Elijah’s father.””

I felt sick.

“Why?””

“Because Ethan had a history.””

“What kind?””

Claire hesitated.

“He had been arrested before.””

“For what?””

“A mistake.””

I waited.

She sighed.

“He got into a fight when he was younger.””

“That’s it?””

“Yes.””

I looked toward the front door.

“And Thomas used that?””

Claire nodded.

“He told everyone Ethan was unstable.””

Rachel whispered:

“Just like he did with Claire.””

Exactly.

A pattern.

A system.

A story built around making certain people look incapable.

“So Ethan found out.””

Claire nodded.

“He confronted Thomas.””

“What happened?””

“He disappeared.””

“When?””

“The same week Thomas told me he was dead.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“You believed him?””

Claire looked down.

“I was broken.””

Her voice became quieter.

“I had just lost my son.””

I softened slightly.

Not because I forgave everything.

Because I understood grief.

“And you never looked for him?””

“I tried.””

She shook her head.

“Thomas told me Ethan left.””

“Did you believe that?””

“No.””

The answer was immediate.

“Then why stop?””

Claire looked at Rachel.

“Because by then, I had nothing.””

The sadness in her voice was overwhelming.

A mother who lost her child.

A father erased.

A family destroyed by paperwork.

Then my phone buzzed.

A new message.

Everyone froze.

I opened it.

A location.

An address.

And one sentence.

*Come alone if you want to know why Elijah was chosen.*

Rachel grabbed my arm.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“I have to go.””

“You don’t know who sent that.””

“I know.””

“Daniel.””

“My son is there.””

Claire stepped forward.

“I’m coming with you.””

“No.””

She looked surprised.

“This involves you.””

“That’s exactly why.””

I shook my head.

“I don’t know who to trust.””

The words hurt everyone.

But they were true.

Rachel looked at me.

“What about me?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because I didn’t know.

That was the worst part.

I had spent seven years trusting one person completely.

And now I wasn’t sure I knew her at all.

The address led us to an abandoned warehouse on the edge of town.

I parked outside.

Claire sat beside me.

Neither of us spoke.

The building looked empty.

Broken windows.

Rusting metal.

A place people forgot.

But someone wanted me there.

“You don’t have to do this,” Claire said.

I looked at her.

“Yes, I do.””

She nodded.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked away.

“For what?””

“For everything.””

The honesty caught me off guard.

“I don’t know if I can forgive you.””

“I know.””

“But I believe you love him.””

Claire’s eyes filled.

“That’s all I ever wanted him to know.””

We got out of the car.

The warehouse door opened before we reached it.

A man stood inside.

For a second, I thought I knew him.

Not because I had seen his face.

Because of his eyes.

The same eyes Elijah had.

The same sadness.

The same fear.

Claire stopped breathing.

“Ethan.””

The man looked at her.

“Hello, Claire.””

Her hand covered her mouth.

“You’re alive.””

He smiled sadly.

“Barely.””

I stepped forward.

“Where is my son?””

Ethan looked at me.

“He’s safe.””

“Where?””

“Inside.””

I moved past him.

But Ethan stopped me.

“Before you see him, you need to understand something.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“Your son was never the target.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Ethan looked toward the warehouse.

“Thomas was.””

I didn’t understand.

“Then why take Elijah?””

“Because Thomas knew he was the only thing that could force everyone to reveal the truth.””

My heart raced.

“Where is Thomas?””

Ethan’s expression darkened.

“He’s been controlling this since the beginning.””

“Why?””

Ethan looked at Claire.

Then at me.

“Because Elijah is proof.””

“Proof of what?””

Ethan reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph of Thomas.

Standing beside another man.

A man I recognized.

My breath stopped.

Because the second man was my own father.

My father who died ten years ago.

I looked at Ethan.

“What is this?””

He whispered:

“Your father knew Thomas before you ever met Rachel.””

I stared at the picture.

My hands started shaking.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Ethan looked toward the dark hallway.

“Because your father was the first person who helped Thomas hide what he did.””

I felt like the ground disappeared.

“My father?””

Ethan nodded.

“And Elijah…”

He paused.

“Is connected to all of it.””

A sound came from deeper inside the warehouse.

A child’s voice.

“Daddy?””

I ran.

“ELIJAH!””

The sound echoed.

I found him sitting in a small room.

He was unharmed.

Crying.

I dropped to my knees and hugged him.

“Buddy.””

He held onto me tightly.

“I knew you would come.””

I closed my eyes.

“I’m sorry.””

Behind me, Ethan stood in the doorway.

Claire was crying.

Then Elijah pulled away.

“Daddy?””

“Yeah?””

“The man who took me said something.””

My heart tightened.

“What did he say?””

Elijah looked scared.

“He said…”

He swallowed.

“He said my real family would come back for me.””

I looked at Ethan.

Then Claire.

Then the darkness behind them.

And I realized something.

This was never just about who raised Elijah.

It was about who had been hiding the truth.

And somewhere, Thomas Reed was still out there.

Watching.

Waiting.

My phone buzzed one more time.

A message.

From Thomas.

*You found Elijah. Good. Now find out why your father helped me.*

I stared at the screen.

Because suddenly, the biggest secret was no longer Rachel’s.

May you like

It was mine.

And I had never even known it existed.
