Chapter 6: The People Who Came Looking

The knocking came again.

Three times.

Slow.

Heavy.

Not the uncertain knock of a neighbor.

Not the impatient knock of a delivery driver.

It sounded like someone who already knew they belonged there.

Someone who expected the door to open.

Rachel grabbed my arm.

“Daniel.””

Her voice was barely a whisper.

I looked at her.

“What?””

“We need to hide Claire.””

I pulled my arm away.

“Hide her?””

Claire stood behind us, silent.

I looked between the two sisters.

“No.””

Rachel’s eyes widened.

“What do you mean, no?””

“I mean I’m done hiding things.””

Another knock.

Harder.

The windows seemed to vibrate.

Claire stepped closer.

“They won’t stop.””

I looked at her.

“Who are they?””

She didn’t answer.

That scared me more than anything.

“Claire.””

Her eyes moved toward the door.

“The people who helped Rachel take Elijah.””

My stomach tightened.

“What people?””

Rachel looked away.

And there it was again.

Another secret.

Another piece of the truth buried under years of silence.

I walked toward the front door.

Rachel grabbed my shoulder.

“Daniel, don’t.””

I turned.

“Why?””

“Because you don’t know who’s outside.””

I looked at Claire.

“Do you?””

Claire nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

The room became quiet.

“Who?””

She swallowed.

“The adoption agency.””

I froze.

The word landed heavier than I expected.

Adoption.

Not kidnapping.

Not stealing.

A legal word.

A word that changed everything.

“Explain.””

Claire looked at Rachel.

“She told me she would help me.””

Rachel closed her eyes.

“Claire…”

“No.””

Claire’s voice cracked.

“You promised.””

Rachel looked like she had aged ten years in a few seconds.

“I was trying to protect him.””

“You were trying to keep him.””

The sentence cut through the room.

I looked at Rachel.

“Did you adopt Elijah?””

She didn’t answer.

“Rachel.””

A tear rolled down her face.

“Yes.””

The knocking continued.

But now it felt far away.

Because my entire world had narrowed down to one question.

“How?””

Rachel sat down.

“I thought Claire signed the papers.””

“Thought?””

She covered her face.

“I didn’t know everything.””

“That’s not good enough.””

“I know.””

“No.””

My voice rose.

“You keep saying that.””

She looked at me.

“Because I do know.””

“Then tell me.””

Rachel took a shaky breath.

“After Claire disappeared…”

I interrupted.

“She didn’t disappear.””

Rachel nodded.

“After she left the hospital, everyone thought she abandoned Elijah.””

“Everyone?””

“The doctors. The agency. Social services.””

“And you?””

She looked at me.

“I told them I was family.””

The pieces started connecting.

“Your sister.””

“Yes.””

“And they allowed you to take him?””

“Temporarily.””

I stared.

“Temporarily?””

Rachel nodded.

“I was supposed to be a temporary guardian.””

My heart sank.

“But you never gave him back.””

“No.””

The honesty hurt.

“How did the adoption happen?””

Rachel looked down.

“I don’t know.””

Claire laughed quietly.

A bitter laugh.

“I do.””

Everyone looked at her.

Claire’s expression was full of pain.

“Because I never signed it.””

Silence.

“What?””

I looked at Claire.

“What are you saying?””

She stepped closer.

“I never gave permission.””

Rachel’s face changed.

“Claire…”

“No.””

Claire looked at her sister.

“You told me it was temporary.””

“I believed it was.””

“You knew.””

“I didn’t.””

“You knew enough.””

The two sisters stared at each other.

And suddenly I understood.

This wasn’t one lie.

It was years of choices.

Small choices.

Each one becoming impossible to undo.

A loud voice came from outside.

“Mr. Carter?””

My blood went cold.

They knew my name.

The voice continued.

“This is Sarah Collins from Whitmore Family Services. We need to speak with you.””

Claire closed her eyes.

“They’re here.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

She whispered:

“Because they know I came back.””

I moved away from the door.

“Why would they care?””

Claire looked at me.

“Because they were never looking for me.””

My eyebrows tightened.

“What?””

“They were looking for Elijah.””

The house suddenly felt too small.

I walked to the window and looked through the curtain.

A black SUV was parked outside.

Two people stood near the front gate.

A woman holding a folder.

A man standing beside her.

The woman looked directly at the house.

Like she knew I was watching.

“Daniel,” Rachel whispered.

I turned.

“What?””

“Don’t let them take him.””

The fear in her voice was real.

But I couldn’t ignore what I had just learned.

“You mean don’t let them take him from you.””

Her face fell.

“Daniel…”

“I don’t know what’s true anymore.””

Claire looked at me.

“You don’t have to trust me.””

I stared at her.

“But?””

“But look at your son.””

She pointed upstairs.

“Look at who he loves.””

I said nothing.

“Then ask yourself one question.””

“What?””

“Who has been lying to him?””

That hurt because I didn’t have an answer.

The front door shook slightly.

The woman outside knocked again.

“Mr. Carter, we know you’re home.””

Rachel stepped forward.

“We need to decide.””

I looked at her.

“Decide what?””

Her voice broke.

“Whether we tell them.””

Claire looked at Rachel.

“No.””

Rachel turned.

“You want me to keep running?””

“I want you to stop making decisions for everyone.””

The words were sharp.

And they were deserved.

Before anyone could speak, the door handle moved.

Someone was trying to open it.

My heart raced.

“They can’t do that,” I said.

Claire looked at me.

“They can if they have paperwork.””

Rachel whispered:

“And they do.””

The door opened slightly.

Not forced.

Unlocked.

My eyes moved to Rachel.

“Why is it unlocked?””

She froze.

Then looked toward the kitchen.

“I locked it.””

Claire’s expression changed.

“Someone else opened it.””

A cold feeling spread through me.

Someone had been inside.

Recently.

I stepped backward.

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

Then a voice came from the hallway.

“Daniel?””

I froze.

Because it wasn’t the woman outside.

It was a voice from inside the house.

A familiar voice.

A voice I knew.

I turned slowly.

And there, standing near the stairs, was my five-year-old son.

“Elijah.””

His face was pale.

He looked terrified.

“Daddy…”

I rushed toward him.

“What are you doing down here?””

He pointed toward the hallway.

“There was a man.””

My heart stopped.

“What man?””

Elijah’s eyes filled with tears.

“The man who talks to the lady behind the wall.””

Everyone went still.

Claire whispered:

“No.””

I looked at her.

“You know him?””

Her face lost all color.

“Daniel…”

The front door opened.

The woman from outside stepped inside.

Behind her stood the man.

The same man Elijah had seen.

The same man Claire recognized.

And when he looked at me, he smiled.

Not warmly.

Not kindly.

Like someone who had been waiting for this moment.

“Daniel Carter,” he said.

“I’m glad we finally get to meet.””

My body went cold.

Because Claire was right.

They weren’t looking for her.

They were looking for Elijah.

The man looked at my son.

Then back at me.

“After all these years…”

May you like

He smiled.

“It’s time you learned who your son really belongs to.””
