Chapter 8: The Night Everyone Lied

The front door clicked shut.

But nobody moved.

It was as if Thomas Reed had taken all the air in the room with him.

I stood there, staring at Rachel.

Waiting.

Because now I knew there was another secret.

Another moment in time where everyone had decided I didn’t deserve the truth.

Rachel looked away.

That hurt more than anger would have.

Anger meant she wanted to fight.

Looking away meant she knew.

“Rachel.””

Her shoulders dropped.

“Daniel…”

“Where were you the night Claire disappeared?””

The question sat between us.

Claire closed her eyes.

Elijah was upstairs.

Safe.

At least I hoped he was.

For the first time in seven years, I was grateful he wasn’t hearing this.

Rachel walked toward the kitchen counter and placed both hands on it.

“I went to see her.””

My chest tightened.

“Why?””

“She called me.””

“When?””

“Late.””

“How late?””

Rachel swallowed.

“After midnight.””

I looked at Claire.

She was staring at her sister.

“You didn’t tell him.””

Rachel shook her head.

“No.””

Claire’s face filled with disbelief.

“You promised.””

Rachel whispered:

“I know.””

I looked between them.

“What happened?””

Neither answered.

Then Claire spoke.

“She came to my apartment.””

Rachel looked at her.

“Claire…”

“No.””

Claire wiped her tears.

“He deserves to know.””

Rachel lowered her head.

“You’re right.””

I waited.

Claire took a deep breath.

“That night, I had Elijah.””

My eyes moved toward the stairs.

“Your son was six months old.””

I nodded slowly.

“I remember.””

“No.””

Claire looked at me.

“You remember what Rachel told you.””

The words hurt.

Because she was right.

I only knew the story I had been given.

Claire continued.

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

She looked down.

“I had received a letter.””

“What kind of letter?””

“From the agency.””

My expression changed.

“The adoption agency?””

She nodded.

“They told me they were reviewing my ability to keep custody.””

“Why?””

Claire looked at Rachel.

“Because someone reported me.””

The silence was immediate.

I looked at Rachel.

“No.””

Rachel’s eyes filled.

“I didn’t want that.””

“You reported her?””

“No.””

“Then who did?””

Nobody answered.

And that was the worst answer.

“Who?””

Rachel whispered:

“I don’t know.””

Claire laughed quietly.

“You never asked.””

“I did.””

“When?””

“After.””

“After you took him?””

Rachel closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

I felt sick.

“So you knew.””

“I suspected.””

“You suspected someone was trying to take Elijah from Claire.””

Rachel nodded.

“And you still took him.””

Tears fell down her face.

“Yes.””

Claire looked away.

“She came to my apartment that night because she thought I was the only person she could trust.””

I looked at Rachel.

“Were you?””

Rachel couldn’t answer.

Claire continued.

“She told me she was afraid.””

“Of the agency?””

“Yes.””

“Of Thomas?””

Her eyes moved slightly.

That was enough.

“Claire?””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

“Because Thomas was the one who handled my case.””

I remembered his calm voice.

His folder.

His confidence.

“He was the person who decided I wasn’t a good mother.””

Claire’s voice cracked.

“And then he was the person who offered Rachel a solution.””

I turned.

“Rachel?””

My wife looked horrified.

“That’s not what happened.””

Claire stared at her.

“Isn’t it?””

“Claire, no.””

“Tell him.””

Rachel was crying now.

“I didn’t know.””

“Tell him what you didn’t know.””

The kitchen became unbearable.

Finally, Rachel whispered:

“Thomas told me Claire needed help.””

“And?””

“He said if I became Elijah’s guardian, Claire could get treatment.””

I looked at her.

“You believed him.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Rachel’s face broke.

“Because I wanted to believe there was a way to save everyone.””

I shook my head.

“But you didn’t.””

“No.””

Her voice was almost silent.

“I made it worse.””

Claire looked at the floor.

“That night, I asked Rachel to stay.””

“Why?””

“Because I was scared.””

The answer was simple.

Human.

Painfully human.

“I thought she was my sister.””

Claire looked at Rachel.

“I thought she loved me.””

Rachel covered her face.

“I did.””

“But you left.””

Rachel nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked at her.

“When?””

“Before sunrise.””

“And you took Elijah?””

“No.””

The answer surprised me.

“No?””

Rachel shook her head.

“I didn’t take him.””

Everyone became still.

“What?””

Rachel looked at Claire.

“She gave him to me.””

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“I gave him to her because I thought I had no choice.””

The truth became more complicated.

Not easier.

“Why?””

Claire looked at me.

“Because Thomas came to my apartment.””

A chill moved through me.

“When?””

“That night.””

Rachel’s face changed.

“You never told me that.””

“Because you didn’t know everything.””

Claire looked toward the window.

“He told me if I didn’t cooperate, they would take Elijah permanently.””

“Did they have that power?””

“I didn’t know.””

She looked down.

“I was a new mother. I was exhausted. I was terrified.””

I understood fear.

I didn’t understand what fear could make people do.

“I signed papers.””

Rachel whispered:

“Claire…”

“I signed temporary custody papers.””

I looked at Claire.

“Temporary?””

“Yes.””

“Not adoption?””

“No.””

My eyes moved toward the document Thomas had shown me.

“Then how did it become adoption?””

Claire looked at Rachel.

And Rachel started crying.

“I don’t know.””

That sentence sounded different this time.

Not like a lie.

Like a confession.

“I swear.””

She looked at me.

“I didn’t know.””

“Then why hide it?””

“Because when I found out, it was too late.””

“What do you mean?””

Rachel sat down.

“Months later, I received adoption paperwork.””

“And?””

“I thought Claire signed it.””

“But she didn’t.””

“No.””

Rachel shook her head.

“I tried to contact Thomas.””

“And?””

“He told me Claire had changed her mind.””

Claire laughed bitterly.

“I never changed my mind.””

The room went quiet.

Rachel whispered:

“I should have gone to the police.””

“But you didn’t.””

“No.””

“Why?””

Rachel looked at me.

“Because I was afraid I would lose Elijah.””

There it was.

The truth.

The thing underneath everything.

Fear.

Everyone had made choices because they were afraid.

And Elijah had paid the price.

A small sound came from upstairs.

A door opening.

We all froze.

“Elijah?””

No answer.

I ran toward the stairs.

“Elijah!””

His bedroom door was open.

The room was empty.

My heart stopped.

“Rachel!””

She rushed upstairs.

“Where is he?””

I looked around.

The window was closed.

The door was open.

Then I saw something on his bed.

A drawing.

A fresh one.

My hands shook as I picked it up.

It showed our house.

Me.

Rachel.

Claire.

And another person.

A tall man.

Standing behind Elijah.

I turned the paper over.

Three words were written on the back.

Words that made my blood turn cold.

*I found him.*

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered immediately.

“Where is my son?””

Silence.

Then a man’s voice.

Not Thomas.

Someone else.

Someone younger.

Someone I had never heard before.

“Daniel Carter.””

I gripped the phone.

“Who are you?””

A pause.

Then:

“I’m the reason Elijah was never supposed to be yours.””

My heart stopped.

“Where is Elijah?””

The man breathed softly.

“Safe.””

I closed my eyes.

“Bring him back.””

A quiet laugh.

“You still don’t understand.””

The voice became colder.

“Elijah wasn’t hidden from us.””

A pause.

“He was hidden from you.””

The call ended.

And on the other side of the room, Claire was staring at the drawing.

Because she recognized the person standing behind Elijah.

She whispered one name.

A name that made Rachel collapse.

“Ethan.””

I looked at her.

“Who is Ethan?””

Claire’s face went white.

“He’s Elijah’s father.””

And then she said the words that changed everything.

“He died seven years ago.””

May you like

I stared at her.

“Then who just called me?””
